Pop culture.

I think that I’m one of the most culturally inept people I know. To prove my point, here’s a short list of movies I haven’t seen: 

The Godfather

Forrest Gump

Harry Potter Series

Monty Python (is this a series?)

Rocky (again, series...?)

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Braveheart

Schindler’s List

Good Fellas 

Etc. Again, that’s just the short list. I also don’t keep up with TV series. I’ve never seen Game of Thrones, Lost, Dexter, Jersey Shore, Doctor Who, I’ve only skipped through Breaking Bad, and watch SVU when I’m in hotels. I don’t know how I’ve managed to live in this time and age. Well, actually I don’t manage. I’m BEYOND LOST when it comes to these conversations. I don’t know actor’s names, director’s names, in what movies they’ve been, what awards they’ve gotten. Nada! I’ll be clear that I also have never seen a single episode of Keeping up with the Kardashian’s but it’s hard to not know who Kim Kardashian is. 

She’s actually pretty easy to keep up with. (Ha!) No one knows why she’s really famous, she’s everywhere, she posts a lot of nudes, she married KANYE WEST, and she’s the subject of many a meme. But the latest thing she’s done is break the internet by exposing Taylor Swift. 

Girl. YASSSSS. I was there! Well I was in bed at midnight scrolling through Twitter and I came across the story (and yes I do follow her on Snapchat) and I was HOWLING. I couldn’t be happier. I stayed up til 3am watching the memes develop. Well, what’s the big deal you ask? Well she kept receipts on Kanye’s phone conversation with Taylor Swift where she approves of the lyrics in Kanye’s song Famous. America’s sweetheart, blondie with ‘good girl syndrome’, the underdog’s girl, Taylor MF Swift, got exposed for the carefully curated facade she is. Why does this matter???? Well it does to me (and clearly a ton of people on Twitter) for so many reasons. 

We all have a Taylor (or several) in our lives. We’ve all had a person get away with fucking murder as they winced and smirked our way because they knew and we knew they could play it off with their good kid charm. I’ve seen this done a lot in my youth group days. I see it now but in a less juvenile way. Am I innocent of this? Probably not. But I tend to be the person who would get in trouble because I don’t keep my mouth shut and call shit for what it is. My graces don’t come off quite as charming. 

During the course of her entire career she’s thrown people under the bus to leverage her career. All of her albums shame somebody in her life. These [former] friends of hers have only served as collateral damage to get her to where she is. How do people get away with this? Oh I know but I also don’t know.

In my eyes it’s so damn obvious that we’re seeing a case of white mediocrity get merited over black excellence. Kanye is a big, scary, black dude who interrupts innocent white girl’s sweet little speeches. HE KNEW ALONG WITH EVERYONE THAT BEYONCE DESERVED THAT AWARD- but I digress. 

Clearly I have a lot of feels for this drama but what I take from this is two things: 

1. The truth will always come out and set the righteous free. This is biblical y’all don’t mess!

2. I respect your craftiness, my dear Taylors, to carefully curate the image you want to present to the world. Just don’t come whining when it all comes down on you.
