Butt Hinge (1996) • Garry Jones • Bronze and Brass • 60" x 50" x 48" • “Known for its fun design and playful title, Butt Hinge, by Calgary artist Garry Jones, is both functional and whimsical. This larger than life size hinge is held together with three large scale screws that holds the bench in place. The sculpture was originally located on the North East corner of Perron Street and St. Anne Street. In 1997 this sculpture may have saved lives when a passing motorist collapsed at the wheel, lost control of his vehicle and ran on to the sidewalk, colliding into the bench. Weighing approximately one tonne, this bench prevented the driver from crashing into the glass window of the coffee shop located behind it. Luckily no one was hurt; however, the sculpture required restoration and [has now been] relocated for preservation purposes.” • Location: 15 Perron Street, Courtyard, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada.
