May I request a gendrya modern au where gendry's a cop who is investigating a con(wo)man who has led the Freys to destruction and now seems to be doing the same to the lannisters?
âSmith, donât get too close,â Lem warns him through the earpiece.
âIâm not going to get too close,â Gendry says, holding a styrofoam cup of coffee to his lips to hide their movement. Â âI canât get a good view of her is all.â
âSheâs twistier than a cat. Â You get too close and she spots you weâll have to find a different eye for her and weâre under-staffed right now.â
âI know. Â I know. Â Ever since Bericââ
âIâm just trying to get a better view.â
Theyâve been tailing her for weeksâever since theyâd found the remnants of a fake id in Freyâs burned down place.  She clearly hadnât meant for it to survive, but somehow it had.  Facial recognition software at the precinct hadnât brought up who she was but GendryâŚwell, heâd recognize those eyes anywhere.
âSmith,â Lem barked into the earpiece, but heâs close enough now to see her. Â Sheâs typing into a computer, staring intently at the screen. Â She hasnât noticed him yet, Lem can quit worrying. Â Except he wonât. Â âSmith.â
Gendry pretends to stumble, knocking his coffee over her table and ripping the chord out of his earpiece so that it wonât work anymore. Â âShit! Â Sorry!â
Lightning quick, she grabs the computer away from the coffee that could kill it and her eyes flash up to Gendry and just as heâd known it was her immediatelyâ
âGendry?â she says slowly. Â Her voice is lower now, older than a ten-year-oldâs, and he remembers what itâs like when theyâd found Harwin, he remembers hearing it thick with emotion like that.Â
âArya?â he breathes. Â Breathes because sheâs alive. Â Sheâs really, and truly alive.
Gendryâd never thought anything would distract him from his career. Â He never thought that heâd ever compromise what he knows to be right, what his marching orders are from the chief, that heâd be the best he could be in a job thatâideallyâis about helping people.
But heâd never accounted for Arya.  Maybe Lemâs right.  He shouldnât have gotten close, he should have stayed back and watched her from afar.  But heâd spent how many years looking for her, hoping that the Hound hadnât brutalized her the way the Hound had brutalized everyone, only to find that it was she who had somehow flattened The Twins. Â
He shouldnât have been surprised. Â He shouldnât have been relieved.
He shouldnât have gotten close to her because the moment he did it was like he was sixteen again and the only person who mattered was the ten-year-old who had more spine to her than anyone heâd ever met. Â The only thing that mattered was that Arya was alive, and what did it matter if she was working on bringing down the Lannistersâthe justice system wasnât doing it. Â They practically owned the justice system.
And maybe it was that heâd liked comic books too much as a kid and Arya was a little too much like Batman. Â He was fine being James Gordon. Â A little too fine with it.
He can tell she doesnât trust himânot the way she used to. Â Maybe itâs because wherever sheâs been, whatever sheâs been doing has made it so she canât trust anyone wholly anymore. Â Or maybe a shrewd kid had gotten to be a shrewder adult. Â Or maybe she knows heâs a cop somehow. Â Some sixth sense. Â Sheâs always had one.
Heâs not going to rat her out, though. Â He canât. Â Thereâs some part of him that knows that itâll mean his badge, his life, but losing Arya again is more than he can bear and he hadnât realized that would be true until sheâd been there on her computer, researching Lannisters.
He knows sheâs researching Lannisters. Â Heâs not stupid. Â
She still calls him stupid though. Â
âAre you in it with me? Â For true? Â And donât you dare lie. Â Iâll know if you do.â
Itâs raining and windy and they donât have an umbrella. Â If he were wearing a wire it would be impossible for them to hear her. Â She knows. Â
Heâs not wearing a wire, though. Â Lem took him off the case ages agoâafter the coffee incidentâbecause he wasnât following orders. Â He benched him and Gendry doesnât care because being benched means that he can help her and feel less like a good cop gone bad. Â Or a bad cop gone good, maybe. Â It doesnât matter. Â He doesnât feel like a cop at all. Â He feels like heâs standing with her in the wind and the rain and like theyâre kids again.
âYeah,â he says. Â âYeah, Iâm in it for true.â
Thereâs a fire in her eyes, and the smile on her face isnât a happy oneâitâs a purposeful one and it would be scary if he didnât know her.
The Lannisters donât know her. Â They donât know whatâs coming for them. Â But Gendry does. Â And Gendryâs coming with it.
