Thought the 100 couldn’t go any lower? 7x15′s ‘Bury Your Disabled’ trope
First off, I’m not a disabled person. But seeing others post about this made me want to educate myself on the issue, and if anyone better qualified can provide further insights, I’d be really grateful.
That Octavia and Clarke conclude they must kill Madi after literally 10 seconds because she’s ‘conscious but can’t move’ is seriously fucked up. It’s the Mercy Kill trope writ large, a thoughtless writing decision that strips away the sensitivity such a weighty issue deserves. The fact that Madi is a child, and that they directly parallel it to the mercy killing of someone reduced to meat chars due to acid fog in S1... It’s a bloody mess. Oh, and they don’t end up pulling the trigger because they get distracted by Cadogan and promptly waltz on out of there, leaving Madi in that state and completely invalidating their ostensible justification for killing her, ie. Putting her out of her misery.
At this point, they’re recklessly perpetuating harmful ableist tropes with subzero subtlety for pure shock value, and for anyone who was personally hurt by this I’m so sorry the show did that to you on top of every-fucking else.
