Joyce has had to deal with plenty of stubbornness in her life. She's had her mother. And Lonnie and his mother. She raised two boys who, even if they are generally delightful, definitely had their moments. She'd been through two sets of the terrible twos with a sprinkling of teenage angst along the way. She's worked retail.
But Hopper takes the cake. Takes the whole damn bakery, really.
It's vital, imperative, that he attends all his hospital check-ups. Doc Owens had been absolutely clear about that. No one's exactly sure what happened directly after Starcourt, but the stint in the Russian jail had taken its toll on Hop's body and there were almost certainly some residual effects from travelling through the Gate and from being exposed to whatever the hell there was in that underground lab.
But Hop is not exactly sensible when it comes to taking care of himself. Joyce knows that. And he's stubborn and proud and, understandably, not a fan of hospitals. Afraid too, even if he'd never admit it. Afraid of the tests and what the doctors might find and what they might say. Afraid to face it alone. So Joyce goes with him. Every time. Drives him there with the radio tuned to some country station he likes and makes small talk the whole time and, if Hopper isn't talking, she'll reach over and hold his hand. She doesn't stay in for the actual examinations though. That’s a step too far for either of them. Instead she goes off to get them both a cocoa from the machine down the hall. The one that just so happens to be outside Billy Hargrove's room.
Joyce didn't know that at first. She was too focused on her worries about Hopper and about his recovery to even notice there was a room, let alone a patient. But one day, a few weeks in when things were finally starting to feel normal again, she just so happened to look over and see him. Recognise him. Wonder about him. And now it's become a habit.
Not that much changes.
She's never seen him awake. Doesn't know if he does wake. If he ever will. And a realisation hits her suddenly, a thought floating up out of nowhere, that he'd been asleep the first time she saw him too, slumped on the floor of her kitchen with his shirt half-open and his curls a mess and a broken plate scattered around him, and the kids had been shocked when they saw him there, all staring silently before they suddenly erupted into a clamour of stories about what he'd done. How he'd threatened Lucas and fought Steve, nearly killed him.
How Max stood up to him
Joyce had been tired that day. Exhausted. Wrung out and only just holding on, and finding Billy had been the absolute last straw for her. She hadn't been gentle. Hadn't cared. Hadn't thought one bit for the bruises and dried blood on his face. Hadn't considered what he might have stumbled in on that night, how it might have looked to him. That he was just seventeen. She didn't think about it at all. Not when she'd had poor Steve Harrington sitting at her kitchen table rubbing half a tube of arnica cream into his bruises and splitting his lip open every time he tried to smile. All Joyce had wanted was that asshole, that bully, out of her house.
So she'd jabbed him awake with her shoe and then let Hop deal with him while she sorted out food for the kids and some painkillers for Steve and she tried not to listen to Billy's furious yelling as he was shoved roughly into Hop's car and delivered home.
And she hadn't really thought about him since.
anyways.
