𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐎𝐍𝐄, 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐎𝐍𝐄. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐋.

the potter family, though somber, desired the public memorial service of henry potter to be a celebration of his life rather than a second funeral. the gathering, held in the large and expansive garden-courtyard of the potter manor has been rumored to feature several speeches by the late mr. potter’s former colleagues - from both his wizengamot and hogwarts days -, a fundraiser for underprivileged purebloods, as well as a performance by famed vocalist madame bletchley, whose musical talents mr. potter was known to be rather fond of. the date of the memorial, as well, was chosen specifically to honor the late mr. potter’s affinity for the lughnasadh festival, which he had attended and bought spiced mead at every year from the age of fifteen until his untimely death. despite the planned levity of the event, as well as the familiar festivities of  lughnasadh, a strange and tense undercurrent seems to run through the crowds. perhaps everyone is thinking of the missing ministry workers–– a shocking scandal just waiting to end in tragedy. it wouldn’t be proper to speak of it, of course, not on such a day. at least, not in public.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐈𝐒 𝐀𝐔𝐆𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝟏𝐒𝐓, 𝟏𝟗𝟓𝟎. 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓'𝐒 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆?

an open and public memorial for the late public figure, henry potter, at the potter family manor in cheshire, england.

lughnasadh: the first day of the three-day festival commemorating the beginning of harvest season and the halfway point between the summer solstice and the autumn equinox. the first day of the festival will take place in grappenhall heys walled garden, england –– due to the heavy wards enchanted into the walls that prevent apparition, portkeys set to travel between this location and diagon alley are fairly common to find and free to use.

several restaurants and confectionaries in diagon alley, in anticipation of an influx in customers, have announced a temporary lowering of their prices.

001 MEMENTO MORI – your character is attending the memorial – why? what is their connection to the potter family, or alternatively, what is their connection to henry potter’s untimely death? are they there as a friend or foe? are they there for remembrance or reconnaissance? feel free to plot with henry potters’ surviving son– fleamont potter –to further discover what may be transpiring.

002 IN VINO VERITAS – your character is attending the lughnasadh festival, an ancient and popular celebration within the wizarding world. if inclined, they may enjoy festivities such as dancing to the tunes of a live band, bowing to the goat who has been crowned festival king, or any other outdoor activity. they may also choose to pass through the many vendor stands to enjoy roasted sunflower seeds, freshly baked goods, a variety of flavored wines and beers sure to loosen any tongue, as well as independent tradespeople selling handcrafted wands, one-of-a-kind robes, and rare potions ingredients. as the sun sets, magic grows more powerful and unstable– a prime time for casting spells and facing fears.

003 SI VALES, VALEO – your character has taken refuge from the day’s events and lingers around diagon alley. perhaps they take advantage of the lowered prices at one of the confectionaries and dining establishments. perhaps they have a shopping list to get through. curiously enough, they seem to have crossed paths with someone they haven’t spoken to in a while. it would be rude not to catch up with them, wouldn’t it? perhaps there is more to discuss between them than one may initially expect..

𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐎𝐍𝐄, 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐄𝐄. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐂𝐊𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆.

there are few who are aware of the guidelines of necromantic dealings, and fewer still who are aware that any such thing exists. when fleamont acted on information in passing from an acquaintance and initiated the seance at the norris house in mid-august, he opened the door between this realm and the other. just a crack–– just enough to let one ghostly spirit slip through. what he failed to do, in his ignorance, was to close that door and bolt it when they were done.  and so, little by little, one by one, the supernatural undead dripped through that sliver of space into our world, not unlike a dripping faucet. for a while their presence was almost undetectable. what was one or two more ghosts, when practically every old house had a collection in the attic? as the seasons shifted and settled, however, the calibre and character of the beings who slipped through changed. as the days grew shorter and as all hallow’s eve drew closer, the undead were able to nudge that door open further, allowing far less benign spirits to pass through. poltergeists. wraiths. phantoms. banshees. they began to wreak havoc on magical london, but it wasn’t until the inferi discovered the open door that the greater wixen public felt fear crawling up their spines, and watched in horror as the flimsy veil between the magical and muggle world was torn down. now, a day before the full moon and almost a week before the peak of their strength, the undead have wrenched that door completely open and have begun to infiltrate this realm in earnest, endless hunger. the ministry of magic have posted notices on every corner assuring their citizens that assistance is on the way, that all will be fixed, to wait for another missive. this does not bode well for the average wixen as night after night there is always someone vulnerable to attack, there are certain charms that were not needed, not thought of, and the ministry seems to lack the empathy of the common wixen’s situation. as time ticks onward with salvation yet to come, the ministry have advised, from their disgustingly comfortable safe houses that are guarded sufficiently from any ill spirit, ghoul, or otherwise, that any and all without protections on par with that of the ministry find a safe location and wait for further instructions.

𝐈𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝐎𝐅 𝐎𝐂𝐓𝐎𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝟐𝟒, 𝟏𝟗𝟓𝟎. 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓'𝐒 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆?

with a full moon and all hallow’s eve on the horizon, your character’s goal is to OUTLAST the hoards of encroaching ghosts, specters, and inferi –– at least long enough for the ministry of magic to put out a plan. they’ve stated that more concrete details will arrive by OCTOBER 30TH, 1950. however, each day it seems like the spirits get stronger.

any number of locations could be fortified ( do you have the know how? ), but there is STRENGTH IN NUMBERS. may we suggest a local gathering place such as a bank or hospital or, for those who have wandered outside the strictly wixen areas recently, a nearby tesco?

as more and more wixen ward their own areas, certain magical modes of travel, such as apparition and the floo network, have become less reliable; even where it still works, you cannot be sure what situation you’ll be landing in. likewise, in an attempt to keep this outbreak from spreading, LONDON has been placed on a magical LOCKDOWN, restricting movement even further.

𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐌𝐏𝐒

timestamps are optional settings and scenarios to help inspire a direction and/or context for your event threads! you are more than encouraged to let your character explore any part of muggle or magical london outside of the three timestamp locations  –  the possibilities are numerous, and as long as your character stays within london, you may set your thread at any location.

007 SUIT & TIE – few places in wizarding london, especially in diagon alley, that are as fortified as gringotts. their wards are ancient, fortified by goblin magic, and have stood the test of time, from goblin revolutions ( all nine of them ) to the great fire of london. the doors have been barred and are refusing entry, the only way to get out is with apparition or a portkey in designated rooms in the front hall. though wizards hired by gringotts stand sentry at the front doors, be careful who you trust and who you follow into the catacombs below gringotts. 

008 MIRRORS – mirrors line the back wall of the tesco’s on great suffolk street that some have ducked into. though muggles cower in the back room, at least two have insisted that they be present with the 20 somethings willing to put themselves as the first line of defense. though the building is dark, the screams outside interrupt the quiet of the night. a particularly clever wix might think to establish anti ghoul and ghost wards around the building to protect its inhabitants but do you know the spells ? and do you feel confident that you could obliviate all the muggles to preserve the statute ? calm that racing heart, the inferi might hear. 

009 ( OH NO ) WHAT YOU GOT – saint mungo’s is the safest place in the wizarding british isles with the exception of the ministry and hogwarts. it also has the easiest access to the ministry for magic with its many guest fireplaces to floo and their never ending connection to the floo network. saint mungo’s also has an impressive set of wards adapted for near any disaster. the entirety of the hospital is on lockdown with the exception of the emergency department and their waiting rooms have become as comfortable as anything can be with a little bit of magic. it’s a tense environment but there’s a gentleness here, the kind of place that sees crises often enough to provide as calming environment as they can.

please remember to keep all event threads, regardless of timestamp or any other circumstances, to remain within the official in-character period of the week of OCTOBER 24 – OCTOBER 31st, 1950. the precise time and date of each interaction is up to the players’ discretion, as long as it stays between the range of that week.

FURTHER DETAILS ON OUR UPCOMING LIVE EVENT

The guests of the Norris’ dinner party dined in the absence of their hosts from the moment their appetizers appeared near their place settings until the very last morsel of the final course was spirited away by house elf magic. Not fifteen minutes after a pair of house elves served the guests with dainty plates topped high with tiny apple pies and even tinier cups of steaming coffee did one Mr. Fleamont Potter scrape back his chair from his seat at the table with a discordant screech and a loud and firm request for the rest of the guests to join him in the lounge. Without a single glance behind his shoulder and certainly without taking a single sip or bite of his dessert, he turned on his heel and left the dining room.

Those who humored his sudden request in the absence of a host or hostess to entertain them would have found the large, round table of the lounge cleared of all adornment save for a select few candles, and the chairs moved from their previous positions to surround the edge in a silent invitation for sitting.

Without a doubt, there was something strange about the entire evening, but Fleamont was determined to get to the bottom of at least one mystery, or so he claimed when he explained his plan of action to the guests that joined him around the lounge table: There was to be a SEANCE held to determine once and for all whether their invitations came from an eccentric dramatist or a dangerous fraud responsible for the wizard’s disappearance and any other sinister happenstance that may have befallen him. If Mr. Norris was truly gone from this world, Fleamont reasoned, what better place to try and contact him than from the heart of his own household?

USING CHARACTER BOTS

In order to help keep this event organized, we’ll be introducing TUPPERBOX to our discord server. This is a discord bot that will allow us to send messages as our characters! We’ll be happy to help everyone get set up in the server, but we thought we could go over the basics here to get everyone started.

The first command you’ll need to use is tul!register which should be formatted as the following: 

tul!register “full name” name:text 

For example, Orion Black would be registered by using the following command: 

tul!register “orion black” orion:text

Once this is done, messages can be sent from Orion Black but beginning them with orion: and then typing your message.

Next comes the fun part! Setting an icon to go along with the profile you’ve just registered. Find an image you’d like to use. Then you can use the tul!avatar command to set this as your profile image. In a message that contained the image you want to use sent the following:

tul!avatar “name”

Alternatively, if you have a url of an image you’d like to use (rather than a saved image), you can use the following command:

tul!avatar “name” url

Following with our previous example, these would look like this:

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR LIVE WRITING EVENTS

If you have not done a live writing event before, or even if you have, we wanted to include some details of both our expectations of how this event will run and some tips and tricks for you to get the best experience out of it!

Our expectation is that this event will last for about three hours. Because of this we encourage our players to get comfy beforehand! Get yourself a snack, a cup of tea, or whatever you’d like to have with you!

The writing for this event is going to feel a little different than writing on the dash, mostly due to length. Given the time limit and the number of players, we encourage that replies stay limited to just a few sentences. 

We will set an order for players to reply based on who is present. There may be changes to this order during the live event but staff members will be sure to keep everyone updated to what those changes are.

Keep in touch with the staff members! If you have to step away for any reason that is perfectly fine, but please let us know so we can keep the event moving in a timely fashion.

A DISCOVERY HAS BEEN MADE  ––

congratulations to prosperina greengrass, who managed to make a discovery in the library! while perusing the shelves, prosperina found a journal amongst the books, the spine devoid of text but with gold paw prints winding up the sides. when she pulls it off the shelf, it opens to a newspaper clipping from july 11th, 1950. the headline reads: bodily remains found at the bottom of hogwarts’ own black lake, authorities terminate search for henry potter. 

A DISCOVERY HAS BEEN MADE  ––

congratulations to lucretia black, who managed to make a discovery in the dressing room! the mirror was quite interesting, wasn’t it? unsettling, even. it took lucretia a little bit of time, but she was able to come to the conclusion that the mirror reflected magically concealed items within the room, making them possible to be found. after a bit of getting used to navigating the room in reverse, she discovered a jewelry box, presumably belonging to mrs. norris. while the box is currently locked, lucretia is overwhelmed by the feeling that finding a way to open it soon is important. 

A DISCOVERY HAS BEEN MADE  ––

congratulations to artemis fawley, who managed to make a discovery within the study. while the desk itself had been thoroughly turned over, it seems whoever was there before artemis did not think to look behind the portraits, or maybe the glares from the norris family members were just too discouraging. whatever the case may be, there was something left behind that artemis noticed: a corner of an envelope, just barely sticking out from behind the frame that holds cecil norris’s great grandmother. despite the woman’s protests at being tilted, artemis was able to remove the envelope. inside is a somewhat vague letter, though it is clear the intention is to inquire on a previously arranged business deal. the interesting thing about it, is that it is signed by none other than the late cygnus black.

𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐎𝐍𝐄, 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐓𝐖𝐎. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐈𝐍𝐕𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍.

your character isn’t quite sure how the letter or the dark-feathered owl carrying it found its way to them  ––   but it did, and it was most curiously signed by a MR. CECIL NORRIS, ESQ. wasn’t that the man who’d disappeared over two weeks prior? the same man they had to prove they hadn’t harmed or kidnapped? it would be hard for anyone not to burn up with curiosity, so was it any surprise that the dinner party ended up with near flawless attendance? each guest marked off their assent to attend – to be fair, there was no option to decline. salmon or chicken. single or with accompaniment. yes. yes. yes. each card burned up in their hand with the last positive check mark, and their name was promptly added to the guest list, manifested in a decorative card of thick ivory parchment labelling each assigned seat at the dinner table, where they will remain until the end of the evening in question. anyone would be curious.  even those who remembered what curiosity did to the proverbial cat.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐈𝐒 𝐀𝐔𝐆𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝟏𝟔𝐓𝐇, 𝟏𝟗𝟓𝟎. 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓'𝐒 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆?

your character has been invited to attend a dinner party at the NORRIS HOUSE on the evening of AUGUST 16th, 1950  –  a little over a fortnight after cecil norris’ official disappearance. it is a black tie event. 

everything is not as it seems. your character attends for whatever reason they have to justify such an action, but their supposed host  –  the missing man himself, is... nowhere to be found. something is wrong.. or, maybe, everything is wrong. there’s quite a bit of time until dinner, so some exploration wouldn’t hurt, would it? 

hidden within three of the rooms in the norris house are THREE EASTER EGGS. if your character begins a starter in a room containing an easter egg, a riddle will be sent to the askbox of the character blog. you have ONE ATTEMPT at solving it. failure to do so means they simply don’t find anything in the room. a successfully solved riddle, on the other hand, exposes A CLUE to the mystery of the evening, and will directly affect the latter half of the event. 

the first correctly solved riddle will be the only one to affect the event, and each riddle can only be solved ONCE, as once a character has done so aspects of the room may change and the EASTER EGG will be revealed. 

additionally, if your character has already solved a riddle, they CANNOT attempt to solve another – this way, other players have a fair shot at the game. however, we do encourage players to try and solve all the riddles, in order to reveal as many clues as possible. each solved riddle will result in an individual reward of 1,000G.

004 CRUSADERS THIRSTING NEAR JERUSALEM – charmed to accommodate the large number of guests, there is only one door for the guests that leads into the dining room — the other door inside leads to the kitchen. at the far end there is a series of windows, a door made of glass settled between, that show the rolling countryside outside of the house, displaying a beautiful, dying sun. sconces run the length of the walls and a large chandelier in the middle of the room illuminate the dining room. each plate has a card with a name, hope your character doesn’t mind rubbing elbows with their adversaries.

005 THE SOUL OF THE ROSE – the humidity rises slightly when your character enters the conservatory, as might be expected, and they find themselves surrounded by greenery of many different shades. the plants inside appear to be a combination of both local and exotic, arranged in a way that is both beautiful but strictly kept, everything in its proper place. it’s quiet here, and maybe they can spare a moment from trying to uncover the mystery to admire the flowers of the moly plant. then again, maybe there are answers hidden in which plants are present…. or maybe that’s a stretch? do they remember their herbology studies that well? does someone else?

006 THE SHEPHERD’S DREAM – the room is brightly lit thanks to a chandelier dripping with multicolored crystals, and speaks of lavish luxury that pushes past the point of comfort into excess. the seating is comprised of a series of overstuffed velvet couches and ottomans in various jewel tones, all surrounding a round and gleaming table, the surface of which reflects the fire crackling in  the room’s two fireplaces. on the mantle of one fireplace sits only an ancient-looking clock that ticks a few beats too fast and runs counter-clockwise. the mantle of the other, larger fireplace is graced by a glass decanter of floo powder, a wickedly curved dagger on an ornate stand, and a fabergé dragon’s egg that seems to glow from within. what are you doing here? how long will you stay? are you conversing with friend, or foe?
