I’m nini and I’m using this blog to share my journey learning German (A2) and find other language learners! I started studying German years ago but never got past the basics. I’m now studying with more intent and creating an intensive study plan for myself. i’m looking for langblr blogs to be mutuals with especially those posting about german and german culture!

The hard part about journaling: forgetting to do it 😓 I decided I wanted to practice my german this evening, so i opened my drawer of resources and started looking through. Decided to take a look at my journal and see what was in there, turned to the bookmarked page to see I completely forgot about the “Ein Satz pro Tag” challenge i made for myself. I’ve missed most of March! Haven’t even made the header or numbers in pen! Funny thing is, the last time I wrote in it was March 8th and the sentence is “Heute schreibe ich “Ein Satz pro Tag” von 18.02 bis 08.03” because i forgot about it in February too!

Truth is journaling is still new to me and not a habit I have. it’s hard to keep up with. I do have a log I keep for every day, marking how I’ve interacted with German (studying, listening, reading, etc).

I made this challenge to get comfortable using more complex language, and to talk about my day. I am okay with not writing in it every day, but i Do want a sentence for each day. Whether I write that sentence the day of or a week later doesn’t matter to me. The “rules” I set for myself are simple:

One sentence for each day of the year

Sentences are entirely from my own head (no outside help)

No corrections the same day as writing. I’ll go through when I’ve learned more and correct them

No repeat sentences

Yesterday I started writing in German.

Finally working on my goal of writing my thoughts out in German. I’m practicing using full sentences that are more complex.

Keine null Tage 1-7/365

Saw this challenge and it matched up with one of my learning goals so I’m joining! I’ve been trying to get into the habit of doing something for german every day. Posting daily feels daunting to me so instead I’m planning to do it at least once a week as part of my reflection and study review.

This week I did very little, which at first I felt like I wasn’t reaching my goal. But I truly have done something every day. I want to intentionally consume German either through speaking, listening, reading, or writing. Since I live with native speakers, I’ve decided to not count hearing their conversations unless I’m actively paying attention to their wording. Below is my review of the week and what I can recall.

The 1st through the 3rd I did my minimum, either looking at vocabulary, duo, watching a video, something small and for 5 minutes (or likely less). On the 4th I did a bit more, I looked up words for a topic (Die Astronomie, Die Sonnensystem) and started a new vocabulary list (about 30m). The 5th was my longest day this week, I did one of my German units which takes me an hour sometimes more. The 6th I watched a few videos in the morning for learning tips, and later listened to a German streamer. Today I reflected on what I learned earlier in the week and reviewed vocabulary.

Completing 1-2 units a week is another goal of mine. I worked on unit 10 - Die Uhrzeit. I practiced asking for and telling the time, writing about leisure activities, and creating more complex sentences. My bf checked my writing for me and I only had 2 mistakes! I was really excited about it.

I am nonbinary and have been learning German for awhile now and I am looking to move to german in the next two years. As someone who is nonbinary what has your experience in Germany been? I have heard mixed things about how accepting they are of nonbinary folks.

hi! sorry about this (very) late reply as i’ve been off tumblr for a while, but i’d be happy to tell you my experience!

Overall, I’ve had no issues. I am more masculine/neutral presenting, and only people close to me (and my online profiles) actually know I identify as nonbinary. When I started working in Germany, I wasn’t very comfortable sharing my identity as I’ve heard of the mixed feelings for nonbinary people. I was lucky my job had a large number of queer employees, and I could hear how they talked about gender. Many seemed perfectly fine with trans folks, but I’m not sure how many even knew of non-binary as a term. I didn’t share I was non-binary until I was talking about it with a coworker from the US. That’s when I was told there was some talk among them wondering if I was trans, but no one asked me about it.

I haven’t posted about this for a month 😅

February ended up being a hard month to study. I went to Berlin February 15-16th, and we had a guest for almost 3 weeks. I wasn’t able to do much as I have a really hard time doing things when other people are around - especially studying. After our guest left, I was back in Berlin at that first weekend of March. Since we had a guest, my main source of German was listening for those 3 weeks. I got really unmotivated but am now trying to get back into it.

I’m going to recap a bit of what the past month has been like for German learning. The last book lesson I completed was unit 13. I worked on that Feb 7th and again Feb 17th. I started watching the series Dark! I finished the first season and I’m going to continue soon. I really like it so far. In my chart, I reduced the times for most days as I didn’t feel like I was actively listening or paying attention.
