#bully boy

While stuck in the airport on my way home from Thanksgiving last weekend, I finished reading “The Blacktongue Thief” by Christopher Buehlman. Kinch and Bully Boy have since moved into my brain and refuse to leave. I felt compelled to draw this duo of complete menaces to society. Go read the book. It’s a hell of a fun read.

Fantastic voicey character writing as usual from CB, very cool and unique premise for a fantasy world, and an absolutely delightful protagonist. The world is dark and the protagonist is constantly eating shit, yet I’m grinning ear to ear every page. It’s just that much of a blast to experience the story as told through Kinch’s distractible and entertaining anecdotes. 10/10 very fun read!

You have probably come across this term before in a shanty or poem. This is a synonym for Sailor, as is the case with Jack Tar. Here the term comes from the Colonial Navy (1775-85), where Sailors were given bully beef, actually beef jerky, as part of their daily ration. And that led to the name. But this also shows where the shanty or poem comes from, because it is not known in the Royal Navy, it is purely American.
