We Source Vitrified Tiles from Morbi: Here Is What We Have Learned
Primary Keywords: vitrified tiles manufacturers in Morbi | Perspective: Builder's Voice | Region: India
META DESCRIPTION: We've sourced vitrified tiles from Morbi across dozens of projects. Here's what we look for in a manufacturer — and why Orkay Tiles has become a consistent part of our procurement process.
We Source Vitrified Tiles from Morbi. Here Is What We Have Learned.
Every project teaches you something.
We have learned a lot from tiles.
We have had deliveries arrive with shade mismatches. We have seen tiles crack under commercial foot traffic — tiles that should have held. We have waited three weeks for a batch that was promised in ten days, watching our finishing schedule collapse around us.
We do not make those mistakes anymore. Not because we got lucky. Because we got specific about where we source — and who we source from.
Morbi, Gujarat, is where most of our tile orders originate. It produces 80% of India's tiles. It has over 1,500 factories. The choice is enormous. That is exactly the problem.
"More options are not the same as better options. In Morbi, you need to know what you are looking for before you start looking."
This is what we look for. And this is how Orkay Tiles — a Morbi manufacturer we have worked with — meets those benchmarks.
The Morbi Advantage Is Real — But Only If You Pick Right
Let us be direct about Morbi.
The scale here is unlike anywhere else in India. Over 1,500 tile factories operate in one district. India's ceramic tile market touched 1.26 billion sq m in 2025 and is growing at roughly 3.3% annually. A significant portion of that supply comes from Morbi. Factories here serve buyers in 160+ countries.
That export exposure matters to us. Manufacturers supplying Europe, the Middle East, and Africa are held to stricter quality benchmarks than those supplying only domestic low-cost channels. When we shortlist Morbi manufacturers, we prioritize those with established export operations. Their internal QC is tighter. Their rejection rates are lower. Their consistency across large orders is better.
"If a manufacturer can reliably supply buyers in Germany and Saudi Arabia, they can reliably supply our project in Pune or Ahmedabad."
Orkay Tiles exports to 40+ countries. That is the first box we tick.
The second is capacity. We are not running small projects. We need manufacturers who can deliver at scale without pushing our order to the back of their queue. Orkay runs at approximately 100,000 sq.m/day — built through six expansions since 1996. Our orders do not strain their line.
What We Actually Specify: Vitrified Tile Types by Project Zone
We stopped thinking of tiles as a single category years ago.
A lobby, a bedroom, a hospital corridor, and an outdoor plaza all have different tile requirements. Getting this right at the specification stage saves us rework costs later. Here is how we break it down.
Glazed Vitrified Tiles (GVT) — Our Default for Residential
GVT tiles give us design flexibility without sacrificing performance. Water absorption stays below 0.5%, meeting IS 15622. We use 800×800 mm and 600×1200 mm formats for living areas and lobbies. For bedrooms, 600×600 mm in satin or matt finishes. Orkay's GVT range covers all three formats. One vendor, no mismatched logistics.
Double-Charged Vitrified Tiles (DCVT) — High-Footfall Commercial
DCVT tiles have colour running 3–4 mm deep into the tile body. Scratch resistance is significantly higher. Breaking strength typically exceeds 1,350 N under IS 15622 norms. We specify DCVT for corridors, parking levels, retail floors, and hospitals. These are areas where surface degradation would show within two years on a lesser tile. We do not compromise here.
Nano Vitrified — Where Maintenance Costs Matter
We specify nano vitrified tiles in kitchens, food courts, and hospital zones. The nano-particle surface coating creates a hydrophobic layer — liquids do not penetrate. Our clients' maintenance teams thank us for this. Lower long-term cleaning costs is a feature we now actively sell to our project buyers.
Porcelain Slab Tiles — Premium Developments Only
Large-format porcelain slabs up to 1200×2400 mm are now standard in our premium residential and hospitality projects. The reduction in grout joints changes how a space reads — it looks seamless and expensive. At 9–12 mm thickness, structural integrity is high. Architects we work with increasingly mandate them for feature walls and hotel lobbies.
Outdoor and Anti-Skid — Non-Negotiable Spec
We do not deviate from the outdoor tile specification. Slip resistance coefficient must be 0.6 or higher. Tiles must be weatherproof. For terraces, pool decks, and garden paths, we use heavy-duty textured tiles designed for exposure. One wrong spec here creates liability. We treat outdoor tile selection as a structural decision, not a finish decision.
The Questions We Ask Every Manufacturer Before Ordering
After years of sourcing from Morbi, we have a standard evaluation process. We ask every manufacturer the same questions. Their answers tell us everything.
What is your daily production capacity?
We need 100,000 sq.m/day capability for large orders. Not installed capacity on paper — actual running capacity. A manufacturer at 40% utilisation with no buffer cannot reliably fulfil a 50,000 sq m order on schedule. We push for honest numbers.
How do you control shade variation across batches?
Shade mismatch is the most common expensive mistake in tile procurement. We ask for Delta E values. We ask for batch segregation protocols. We specify in our purchase orders that all tiles must carry the same batch number. Manufacturers who cannot answer this question clearly do not get our orders.
What certifications do your products carry?
IS 15622 compliance is our baseline. We ask for water absorption test certificates, breaking strength data, and Mohs hardness ratings. For outdoor tiles, we ask for slip resistance test results. For projects with green building targets, we also ask about eco-certifications and manufacturing waste protocols.
What is your realistic lead time for our order size?
Realistic. Not optimistic. We have been burned by optimistic lead times. Standard dispatch from Morbi for in-stock vitrified tiles runs 7–15 working days. For large or custom orders, 20–30 working days is realistic. We build this into our finishing schedules and we hold manufacturers to written commitments.
How are tiles packed for transit?
Breakage during freight is a direct cost we absorb. We ask manufacturers to show us their packaging specifications. Reinforced boxes with internal cushioning significantly reduce transit damage. Orkay uses custom-engineered, eco-friendly boxes built for safe long-haul delivery. We noticed the difference in breakage rates on our first order.
Why Orkay Tiles Has Become a Consistent Part of Our Supply Chain
We are not loyalty buyers. We re-evaluate vendors regularly.
Orkay Tiles has stayed on our approved vendor list because they solve problems we actually have — not because they market well.
They cover our full product range
We source ceramic wall tiles, GVT, DCVT, nano vitrified, porcelain slabs, wood-look planks, countertop tiles, and outdoor anti-skid tiles — all from Orkay. One relationship, one quality baseline, one logistics coordination. For projects running across 8 tile categories, this is not a small thing.
Their export experience shows in consistency
Orkay has been exporting to 40+ countries since the early 2000s. International buyers audit Indian manufacturers hard. Orkay has passed those audits repeatedly. The same quality discipline shows up in domestic orders. Our batch-to-batch consistency from Orkay has been notably better than from manufacturers who only serve the domestic market.
The B2B process is clean
Their quote process is structured. We submit requirements through their product pages — tile type, format, finish, quantity. We get a response with pricing, sample availability, and lead time. No chasing. No ambiguity. For procurement managers running multiple projects simultaneously, a clean vendor process is worth real money.
Their slab range changed what we can offer
When Orkay launched porcelain slabs up to 1200×2400 mm, it opened a product category we had previously sourced from premium importers at significantly higher cost. Same architectural impact. Better price point. Our project margins on premium developments improved.
Packaging quality is reliable
We track transit breakage as a procurement KPI. Orkay's custom-boxed, eco-friendly packaging has delivered consistently lower breakage rates compared to manufacturers using standard packaging. Over multiple orders and projects, this compounds into real cost savings.
