Sorry to bug you, but there's actually a study titled Bugul Noz et Loup Garou in French by Yves Le Diberder that collects first-hand 19th century accounts of the Bugul Noz in Brittany. I had to use google translate, but in general, the accounts paint the Night Shepherd as not actively malicious, but also playing by its own rules. It would harm those who answered its whistle three times (especially when they knew it came from the Bugul Noz and wanted to mock it), beat up people who blocked its path, go into houses to silently demand food, and abduct and drown people in a state of mortal sin, as well as had a fear of crosses, but it would also help and warn, and even protect people who met with accidents and mishaps. It was a creature that people should give a wide berth to, but didn't hate humans and human society as a rule.

When I was a kid there was this marvailher who taught us stories of it and though I heard and read a few positive tales as well, I was mostly left with the impression that you should never answer a whistle at night, lol
I didn't see it as hating human, nor as evil β when I said "not benevolent" I meant not solely. It's more morally ambiguous, like, frankly, a lot ofbreton creatures are.
I should really read that book, I want to learn more about legends because though I read on some of these tales a lot were just... The ones I was taught as a kid, lol.

Bugul Noz, also known as the Night Shepherd, is a fey being from the folklore of France and Great Britain. He is said to be very ugly but ultimately kind, even announcing his presence in advance so people will not be frightened by his appearance.
Bugul Noz will sometimes use his visage to frighten people away from dangerous areas, especially at night. Even woodland animals are afraid to go near him. Thus, despite his friendly and gentle nature, he is constantly alone.
