isa and terry (localized pun names bc their real ones are just scents) used to be very close as nymphs and workers, until a particularly devastating ant attack left their colony with a shortage of soldiers. to keep the colony protected, the queen sent out pheromones to turn some of her workers into soldiers, and terry ended up being one of them. the change was all extremely distressing for her at first, but over time she became jaded and aggressive as a coping mechanism and trauma response to the Horrors of War she now had to experience. this drove a wedge between the sisters, since isa was a pacifist and too naive to understand the need for violence, and took for granted the life terry missed so much
