betty’s chest was tight when she had opened the front door to see jughead stood there, and she didn’t even have to say anything for him to understand what had her so worked up. even from the front door it was easy to hear her parents arguing in the kitchen, and as their voices raised betty visibly flinched and clenched her teeth.
jughead had never seen how bad her family was, she didn’t want him to. they hadn’t been dating for long, and betty knew he had more than enough on his plate. but they had been arguing all day to the point where anytime one of them raised their voice she flinched and had the urge to cover her ears, and she knew jughead was only across the street and at archie’s, so in a panic she had text him to come and get her. she needed to get out of the house.
“okay, come on.” jughead reached to gently grab her hand, and her hand was tight around his as he pulled her through the door and shut it behind her. she shook as they walked down the porch steps, and her waterline burned with tears as she walked alongside her boyfriend, not speaking for a moment.
she knew he understood exactly what she was feeling. jughead hadn’t had the best home life, and he wasn’t a stranger to parents arguing. the only difference was he had a sister that was there with him; betty didn’t have polly anymore. it would be easier if her sister was there, she could handle it.
her hand trembled in his as they walked down the street, not a set destination in mind, and when she sniffled through the oncoming tears she felt him pull her closer into himself, letting go of her hand to move an arm around her waist.
“take a deep breath, betty.” jughead mumbled beside her, and she did as she was told; inhaling shakily as the tears started dripping down her cheeks.
she did it a few times, inhaling deeply through the tightness of her chest and her shaking limbs, though it didn’t stop the tears that formed in her eyes at just the thought of her parents at each other’s throats. they had always argued on and off, but the blonde couldn’t remember the last time that it was that bad. not since polly had left.
she hadn’t been paying attention to where jughead was leading her, too focused on trying to calm down, but she looked up at him once he had stopped and realised they were at the park. it was always empty in the evenings, which at least gave them some privacy. they were tucked behind a tree that stopped anybody from outside the park seeing them, and it allowed betty to be fully vulnerable to jughead when he pulled her into a hug.
she sniffled as she held onto him, still shaking as she gripped onto his denim jacket. he tucked her head underneath his chin, and for a moment he simply just held her and let her cry. he was warm and comforting, and she gripped onto him even tighter when she had cried. it wasn’t for long, but it was tears that she had needed to get out all day.
“i’m so sorry, betty.” jughead mumbled into her hair, and she took in another deep breath as she nodded.
“they’ve-“ she hiccuped. “they haven’t been this bad in a long while.”
she felt him nod against her head, and he sighed as he pressed a kiss to her temple. “why don’t you go and stay with veronica for a night or two until they cool off a bit?” he asked gently. “i’d offer, but..” he trailed off with a sigh, and betty frowned.
“i know, i know i’m sorry jug, i shouldn’t be bothering you with this when you’re already-“
jughead cut her off by leaning back from the hug to kiss her, one of his hands against her cheek to hold her close. he kissed her for a long moment, letting his thumb stroke her cheek until her grip on his jacket had loosened and she seemed to relax slightly, before he leaned back to look at her.
“you’re not bothering me, okay?” he asked softly, and betty nodded a little as she sighed. “you never could. i just want to make sure you’re okay.”
betty hugged him again, and she relaxed into his embrace as his palm gently moved along her back. “thank you for coming out with me.” she mumbled into his chest, and allowed a small smile when he kissed the top of her head.
“it’s no problem,” jughead whispered. “like i said, i just want to make sure you’re okay. i’ll always be there when you need me, okay?”
betty nodded and felt another kiss to the top of her head as he held her tighter against himself, in absolutely no rush to leave and get back home.

Bughead & Friends Drabble Challenge, Day 1 | Prompt #1: Mind Reader
“Get out of my head, Jughead!”
“I’m not in your head!”
“Well then, stop thinking so loud!”
Jughead suddenly grabbed Betty by the arm and dragged her into the Blue and Gold, shoving her inside and locking the door behind them.
You ASSHOLE! she thought with a scowl.
“I heard that!” Jughead snapped.
Betty placed her hands on her hips, staring at him through narrowed eyes. “And you say you’re not in my head.”
“It’s not intentional!” Jughead groaned and pulled at his beanie, dragging it down over his face until it came off completely. “Do you have any idea how hard it is to focus with your thoughts in my head?!” He threw his beanie on the floor. “Impossible! I can’t do a damn thing because you have no off switch!”
“Me?” Betty turned on him furiously, now. “What about you? Half the time you’re thinking about food and the other half you’re pissed off—at me!”
He rolled his eyes, and she heard him think, She clearly sucks at interpreting emotions, because she still doesn’t get it.
“What the hell?” She threw her hands up in frustration, marching right up into his personal space. “What aren’t I getting? Why won’t you just tell me?”
“You wanna know?” he said heatedly. “You really want to know?”
“Yes!” Betty exclaimed, and that’s when he took a few calculated steps forward, mere inches separating them now. She swallowed, suddenly nervous by the lack of distance between them, and looked up to lock eyes with his.
I’m not mad at you, she heard him think.
I’m mad because I’m thinking about you—all the fucking time.
I’m mad because I want you, but most of all—I’m mad because I can’t have you.
[definitely more than 100 words but who’s surprised at this point?]
“Elizabeth! Archie is here!”
Betty sprinted down the stairs in a pair of black leggings and a pastel pink shirtdress. Her grey and pink backpack swung loosely on her shoulders as she struggled to pull on her white converse, each step making it a little more difficult.
She could have put them on upstairs and saved herself the hassle, but what was the fun in that?
Her mother eyed her backpack and placed her hands on her hips. “I thought you were going on a date with Archie. What could you possibly need your backpack for?”
“I am going on a date, mom. A study date.” Betty rolled her eyes as she reached the door. She swung the door open, catching a glimpse of the red headed dork who sat in the front seat of his fathers truck as it idled at their curb. “Don’t wait up, we’ll probably catch a movie afterwards.”
Alice sighed and nodded. “Well, at least I can trust him.”
Betty nodded and shut the door, darting to the truck with an ever growing smirk on her face. She whirled the door open and threw her backpack into the middle seat before climbing in herself. Archie didn’t wait for her to buckle -- he put the truck into gear and started down the road.
As soon as her house was out of view, she pulled the shirtdress over her shoulders, revealing a emerald green tank top with a sweetheart neckline. As she shoved the dress into her backpack and pulled her hair from its ponytail, she looked to Archie apologetically. “Sorry I was running behind. I couldn’t find this top anywhere and I was worried Polly stole it before she moved.”
Archie chuckled and shrugged his shoulders. “What’s the plan tonight?”
“Probably going to catch a movie at the Bijou, but we’ll probably spend most of our time at the trailer.” Betty zipped her backpack up and adjusted the strap of her tank. “You?”
“They’re showing Breakfast at Tiffany’s at the drive in, so...”
Betty clapped her hands together excitedly. “That’s Veronica’s favorite!”
“Yeah, that’s what it sounded like.” Archie smiled. “So, same place, same time?”
“Yep. Jug and I will meet you and Veronica at Pops around eleven, and then I’ll ride home with you, just like we’ve been doing for eight months.”
They both shared a laugh as they neared Sunnyside Trailer Park.
“Tell me again why we’ve been lying to your mom about us dating for eight months.”
“Because, Archibald, haven’t you heard?” Betty looked up at Archie with a smirk as she gathered her belongings, the car coming to a halt in front of an all-too familiar trailer. “My mom thinks you’re just the perfect suitor for her dear Elizabeth Cooper.”
With that, she opened the truck door and jumped out. “See you at eleven, Arch!” She called out as she skipped towards the front door of Jughead’s trailer. In the open doorway, a handsome boy with a crown knit beanie leaned against the doorway, and when he smiled, Betty wondered how her mother could think anyone else was more perfect for her than Jughead Jones.
I kind of did it? Bughead deserves better but here are my attempts!
Something Sweet
“Can I have a kiss?”
Their friends shoot him a bewildered look. Betty’s lips curl into a smile.
“Ah, Hershey’s, I meant.”
They’d been doing so well with the nonverbal communication that he hadn’t considered other people needing clarification. One eyebrow wiggle or nose touch and Betty would be biting down a grin, totally on the same page as him.
Ever an angel, she hands him the whole bowl of assorted chocolates, cuddling closer into his side as their friends resume watching The Matchelor.
“Can I have a kiss?” she whispers, batting her eyelashes.
As if she needed to ask.
Unexpected Interruption
Brandishing her brush like a weapon, Betty looks bewildered by his presence in her pastel haven. “What?”
“I’m here to offer my escort services.” He clears his throat, still smiling and stupid from the visual of her bouncing around her room, lip syncing into a hair brush while her cheer skirt flared around her thighs. He wants her to sit on his face but hasn’t figured out how close they are, yet.
“When did this happen?” she asks, gobsmacked by his motorcycle out front.
“There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Betts.”
“That sounds like a challenge.”
It is.
Paper in the Pocket
Every fold makes her feel important and anxious. She tries not to bite her lip as she moves the cootie catcher with each selection, counting the letters and pulling open the flaps.
Detective. 2 kids. Jughead.
“You should try again,” Kevin urges, Ethel nodding.
“No, thanks.”
She draws a heart around her future life in pink gel pen and folds it carefully into her pocket for safekeeping. Curious if it really works, she makes Jughead a version, but he refuses to play. “I choose my own fate.”
“So did I,” she protests, unfolding the now-sweaty bit of paper. “Do you want me to play again?”
His eyes look watery as he shakes his head. “Gel pen is permanent. Guess you’re stuck with me, Betts.”
On Tuesday, the air conditioning went out. Opening the windows only did so much when it was 90° and climbing by 8am.
By Thursday, they had decided that running the fans was only somehow making the apartment hotter. That expensive Dyson she'd insisted on adding to their wedding registry only seemed to push out hot air instead of circulating cooler air.
And that is why, when Jughead Jones returned home from work on Friday afternoon, he found his wife, almost 8 months pregnant and standing in front of the open freezer, blasting herself with cool air while wearing only a matching lace bra and underwear set.

Jughead Jones stood back and watched Betty Cooper do watch she did best, grill people. They were chasing down another mystery—a habit they picked up when they were teens in the cursed small town that they were both raised in. Years and several heartbreaks later they found each other in the others orbit. At first, he wasn’t happy that his editor had asked him to shadow an actual FBI agent. Jughead had scoffed at the idea. But that wasn’t good enough for his jaded albeit brilliant editor. So, now his job was to follow around some bubbling pseudo-cop who his job he could probably do better.
He was surprised when there was a last-minute change and he was charged with following Betty Cooper
