Call me mermaid Skye, queen of Wekas 🐥 Pigeon Island is a 1.7 square km (about 1/2 mile) Island in the middle of Lake Wakatipu with 2 cabins and only accessible by boat. Last week, Willie and our friend Luke ferried 8 people (4 separate trips) in an inflatable dingy across choppy wind-swept waters (in the rain) and camped on the island with a group of friends. Although we had a rough and waterlogged start, the weather cleared up for a beautiful evening and night (so I was off the hook for lugging a tail and camera on the boat, even if it was a fabric one) 👌 The island is home to native bird and tree species, the most apparent of which is the buff Weka, a chicken-like bird that was re-introduced to the island is 2006 as part of an endangered species relocation/protection program. The weka's have no predators on the island and give zero clucks about humans... constantly stealing chips, corn cobs, and other small food items, pecking at wetsuits, climbing on mermaid tails, and photobombing mermaid photoshoots. 😈😈 One brave Weka snuck behind my fluke and slowly emerged during this photo set.
