this little guy has been trucking w me for a couple months now & honestly? i love him. he grows so slow but that’s what i love, he looks so cute in that tiny pot! he’s a water hog too, which i wasn’t expecting from a bonsai 🪴
Buddhist Pines
About 70 % of the trees at Nanlian Garden are Buddhist Pines. These are evergreen trees, a native to South China and Southern Japan.
Despite its name it is not a pine tree. It is a conifer and the actual name is Podocarpus macrophyllus.
Common English names for this tree are also yew plum pine or fern pine. Japanese names are Kusamaki and Inumaki.
The Chinese name is luohan song (羅漢松) which translated means “arhat pine”, this is probably where the name “Buddhist pine” originated.
Buddhist pines can grow very old, there are many trees in the garden which are already several hundreds (even thousands) of years old, making them quite precious.
