One For The Girls / not accepting
11. Some female artists are heavily marketed as such to appeal to an older, male audience. Do you see any problem(s) with this?
I do see a problem with it when the girls are under the legal age limit. It’s disgusting to me, honestly. I mean, it’s one of those things that won’t change either, but I guess the change starts with the companies themselves. There are groups such as CLC and even the sub-unit Hi Suhyun and they appealed to their peers male and female in my opinion. They acted and looked their age, which isn’t something that’s very hard to do. Then again, it must be just as difficult as being a group of grown women and having to do concepts that would be deemed for teenagers, such as SNSD’s I Got A Boy era. However, back to the topic. Being someone that has a girl group under my company with members that are under the age of 19, I in no way condone the idea of marketing to a demographic of grown ass men.
12. “Female idols exist not for their musical talents but to sell a fantasy.” Talk about how that statement affects you/what it makes you think.
Do I really need to talk about that? I think from all the answers I’ve given so far, it’s pretty obvious where I stand on issues like this. Hell, where everyone should stand, honestly. But, to humour the question, I’ll make it short and sweet. I don’t agree with it and it doesn’t affect me anymore, since I know that I’ve made it known the kind of woman that I am. I just worry for certain groups under Crown that haven’t had the luxury to establish themselves that way yet. And I hope it’s not a discouragement to them.
14. Some online blogs exist for the sole purpose of discussing an idol’s sexual appeal. How do you feel about some of the very graphic comments found online? Are you even aware of them?
I pay them no heed. I know of them, but I don’t go looking at the contents or the words said. There’s no reason to.
15. The South Korean standard of beauty is a very singular one. Do you feel as if you fit into it? What effects has it had on you and/or how it makes you perceive yourself?
Not at all. I know that I’m the “ideal type” of plenty of men, yes. But, I also realize that the majority of men that favour me are underground or western, like myself. I think I always knew I was no conventional South Korean beauty, even growing up, but that’s okay with me. I don’t have perfectly straight teeth, my eyes are small and my nose has a bump in it, and I’m not some milk skinned goddess, but– I dunno, those are all things that set me apart. And I prefer it that way. It doesn’t change how I see myself or how I see other women that go through procedures or are just born that way.Â
