Summary: After years of trading sleep for a degree and surviving far too many 3 A.M. breakdowns, landing her dream job should mean that life is perfect now, and it is for a few years… despite the long hours and sudden matrimonial pressures. Sick of this and in a panic, she lies, claiming to be taken, leaving her desperate to find a fake boyfriend, fast. Who better than Jeon Jungkook? The company's future heir himself. It's strictly business, of course. Just to keep her parents off her back, naturally. But as quiet glances replace the professional distance and the act starts feeling dangerously unscripted, the rules stop mattering. She really should've read the fine print.
Warnings: strong language, parental pressure, workaholic, emotionally distant parents, toxic family dynamics, emotional neglect, violence (will update as I go along)
Notes: I love me a bit of fake dating, I feel like it's sooo underrated asw despite how good it is and how much u get from it: the fluff, the funny moments, the slight awkwardness, the chaos, the slips ups, the tension, the silent yearning, thoughts of unrequited love, the realisations, the denials, the angst.... ughhh one of my favourite tropes istg. I hope you like this and I hope I did this trope justice🤞🏼🤞🏼I haven't finished writing it yet but I'm posting this to get my ass motivated to finish it 😭 This is also not gonna be like a super super long slow burn type thing, I don't have the patience to write something like that yet (although in the future I deffo really want to 👀)

⤷ part 2 of 'don't lock the back door', read part one <here>
↬ two different worlds meet perfectly in the middle, formed through quiet nights full of flour and sugar dust ⋆˚࿔✴︎˚。
Pairing: jungkook x female!reader
Summary: After years of living in her own world as the village baker, catching only glimpses of her prince's royal life, she is whisked away by Jungkook for a night full of dancing and starlit confessions as they navigate exactly what they mean to each other.
Genre/Tags: royalty au, Jungkook fanfic, Prince Jungkook, established relationship (kind of?), fluff, fluff, so much fluff, slight angst, Jungkook is a cutie and hopelessly in love
Word Count: 21.0k
Warnings: very very slight angst (literally barely there), insecurity, classism, slight panic attack, mild language (pls lmk if I missed any)
Notes: first of all, yes this is a part two to 'don't lock the back door' but both parts can be read as standalones. Secondly... these two are slowly becoming my favourite. I wrote the first part not thinking I'd write a second but so many people asked for one I just had to, and these really are just two cuties. If you notice any inconsistencies... you didn't, I wrote this across many nights and my brain is literally fried 😭 no but pls do lmk if anything's off and I'll edit it, I just hate proofreading I start overthinking everything. Also this is just straight fluff, I just don't want anything bad to happen to my babies 🥹 these two are too precious for that. I do kinda wanna do a chapter of like their first meeting and shi tho... idk 👀. Also, this chapter is heavily inspired by many of my favourite films and tv shows, in particular: Ella Enchanted, Cinderella (live action), Once Upon a Time, and Princess and The Frog. I just love a good cutesy ballroom scene with a dreamy prince (me fucking when???). But I hope you enjoyyyy :)
The autumn mornings in the village always carry a rather frantic type of energy. Burgundy and gold leaves scatter across the cobblestones, kicked up by the heels of gossiping townspeople as they gather around the grand stone fountain. Street vendors cry out their daily wares of roasted chestnuts and winter squashes, whilst paper boys weave through the crowd, announcing the latest political scandals and court gossip. Heavy draught horses haul wooden barrels of imported ale towards the tavern, their iron shoes clopping loudly against the damp earth and stone.
And for the first time in weeks, you have managed to slip out from behind your workstation, leaving your store in the trusty hands of your apprentices just to spend a few stolen hours walking the market lines with your closest friends.
Alice, whose fingers are permanently stained with the bright indigos and madder reds of her family’s textile stalls, links her arm tightly through yours, leaning her head against your shoulder with an exaggerated sigh. On her other side is Maeve, her apron pockets almost overflowing with a tangled mess of colourful silk ribbons she’s been trying to organise all morning, and failing to. The three of you share a warm, braided cinnamon twist straight from your oven, passing the sticky pastry back and forth and laughing as the fine powdered sugar catches in the wind.
"I'm telling you, Tristan spent what, twenty minutes staring at your door yesterday?" Alice giggles, giving your arm a nudge whilst throwing her eyebrows up in a suggestive arch. "He bought three meat pies which he clearly couldn't afford, just hoping you’d be the one handling the coins at the register. The poor boy was practically shaking."
"He was sweating right through his smock, Y/N," Maeve chimes in, tossing her head back with a loud, ringing laugh that draws a few amused glances from nearby fruit vendors. "And that layer of soot on his forehead didn't exactly help his chances. You really need to stop breaking the hearts of the local boys. It’s becoming a village hazard."
You let out a soft, breathy huff, a cynical smile tugging at the corners of your lips as you take a bite of the pastry, dusting the sugar off your fingers. "The only thing Tristan loves is my brown-sugar glaze, girls. Trust me. If I stopped baking those pies, his sudden infatuation would completely simmer away. Besides, I don't have time to handle a boy who is terrified of his own shadow."
"Oh, please," Alice scoffs playfully, squeezing your arm. "You're just picky. But I suppose when you’re practically married to your ovens, how are you going to find someone better?"
“Exactly!” your eyes light up in agreement. “Tristan can’t exactly spew out a tray of warm pastries when I get a craving, now can he?”
"Oh! Speaking of absolute disasters," Maeve interrupts, leaning in closer with wide, conspiratorial eyes, "did either of you hear about the miller's eldest daughter? Apparently, she was caught behind the hay barn with the apothecary's journeyman, and her father threatened to turn the poor lad into actual flour if he ever caught him sniffing around their grain sacks again!"
Alice gasps dramatically, a hand flying to her chest as a wicked grin breaks across her face. "Oh, as if that scrawny boy has enough substance to make a decent sack of flour! The old man would just end up with a pile of useless chaff. Besides, everyone knows she was batting her eyelashes at the bloomer's boy just last Tuesday on the south side of the town, near that new antiquities store I was telling you about. I swear, that girl changes her mind faster than a weathervane in a gale." Her words are slightly muffled from the pastry occupying her mouth.
You let out a soft snort, shaking your head as you look at them amused. "Well, I certainly hope not. I get most of my pastry flour from him, and I highly doubt the lad would make for a fluffy sponge cake."
Maeve opens her mouth to continue this village mill drama, but is interrupted by a heavy vibration that rattles through the cobblestones beneath your shoes. The easy chatter of the market stalls cuts off all at once, replaced by a tense quiet.
The distant thuds of iron-shod hooves echo down the northern thoroughfare. From the shadows of the upper district stone arches, a magnificent cavalry of the King’s elite knights emerges into the bright autumn sun.
They are a far cry from the arrogant brutes who patrol the lower squares on a daily basis. These are the crown's true protectors—clad in towering plates of polished silver armour that catch the morning light like mirrors, their heavy white velvet capes emblazoned with the golden imperial sun crest snapping in the wind. Standing in the very centre of the vanguard are four royal messengers, riding pristine white stallions, two of which are holding long, gleaming brass trumpets.
The horses halt in a perfect, synchronised line, standing frozen and flawless—as if they had spent the entire dawn rehearsing their blocking in a royal mirror—right before the grand stone fountain in the centre of the main square. The two men lift their instruments to their lips.
Blare.
The deafening call of the imperial trumpet silences the entire square, the echo bouncing off the timbered roofs of the village houses and stalls. The head messenger, a man covered in pristine silver-and-gold silks that look entirely too expensive for this muddy lower district, unfurls a heavy parchment scroll sealed with the realm's dark crimson royal wax.
"By order of His Imperial Majesty, King of Velaria and the Provinces of the Eastern Reach!" The man's voice is amplified beautifully by the surrounding stone structures. "This season marks the grand two-hundredth anniversary of the Golden Lineage! To honour the strength of the Kingdom and celebrate the very people who built its foundation, His Majesty decrees a celebration unlike any the Kingdom has ever seen!
The crowd holds its collective breath, the regular market noise entirely frozen.
"At the turn of the upcoming moon, a simultaneous grand royal ball shall be held across the kingdom's fortresses! Every single citizen of the realm—from the highest-born duke to the most humble villager—is formally invited to join the festivities! By dusk today, a royal courier shall deliver an official invitation to every single household, designating your assigned castle for the evening! Let the bells ring for the two-hundredth year of peace!"
The man furls the parchment with an echoing snap. The knights pull tightly on their reins, their steeds rearing back elegantly before the entire group pivots, retreating toward the citadel with the same speed they arrived with.
For three long seconds, the square remains silent as the dust settles. Then the entire area jumps into action all at once, everyone scattering to engage, argue, and speculate. It is loud and deeply hysterical.
"Two hundred years!" Old Mistress Agnes shrieks, dropping her woven basket of fresh cabbages directly into the dirt, her hands flying to her cheeks in panic. "A ball! In a real, honest-to-gods castle! I haven't worn a proper kirtle since my wedding! Where am I supposed to find silk that hides my bad hip and doesn't make me look like a bloomin' sack of turnips?"
"Don't worry about your hip, Agnes, worry about the damn meat supply!" shouts Donald, the village butcher, leaning his massive, cleaver-wielding arm over his wooden display counter. He barks a rough laugh toward the nearby tavern owners, wiping his hands on his blood-stained apron. "If the King is feeding the entire lower district in those castles, my inventory is gonna rot by Friday! Gonna have to salt every damn pig just to survive the weekend!"
Nearby, the eccentric mill twins, Ken and Kai, instantly lock arms. They begin spinning around in a clumsy, completely ridiculous mock waltz right in the middle of the cobblestone, singing a chaotic, made-up tune at the top of their lungs until Gideon, a burly tavern keeper, swats at them with a wet rag.
"Clear the lane, you clowns!" Gideon yells, though a grin is splitting his weathered face. He turns to a group of nearby woodcarvers. "A royal ball must mean that the palace is unlocking the reserve cellars! If we get assigned to the Solar Keep, I'm drinking enough imported elven wine to forget the entire winter tax cycle!"
"Oh, keep your trousers on, Gideon, the crown isn't handing out their best vintage to a man who uses his apron as a handkerchief," Madame Vivienne chimes in, stepping into the centre of the walkway. As the village matriarch, she carries a practical authority that immediately makes the surrounding men straighten up. She folds her arms, turning a wise eye toward Donald. "Donald, quit your whining. If the castle needs rations, we negotiate a community rate; we don't let our stock rot. And you—" she points a stern finger at the spinning twins, who instantly freeze in the mud, "—stop trackin' filth into the square. If you're going to a castle, you'll need to learn to walk without tripping over your own shadows."
"Hey, now, Vee!" Ken protests, puffing out his chest with a grin. "We’ll be sweeping them noble ladies right off their silk slippers, just you wait! They love a man who knows his way around a flour mill."
"Yeah!" Kai chimes in, winking at the crowd. "Those palace maids won't know what hit 'em."
Alice lets out a disbelieving scoff, shooting them a pitying look. "You can't even pull an empty cart through the square without tripping over your own boots, Ken, let alone pull a duchess up at the citadel. The only thing you'll be sweeping is the castle floors after you spill your punch."
"And what about the flour supply, Vivienne?" you call out from across the fountain, joining the cross-cutting town debate with a small frown. "If the whole valley is baking for the anniversary, the grain prices are going to skyrocket by tomorrow morning. My ovens can't run on good intentions."
Vivienne nods curtly, appreciating the practical thought. "I'm already ahead of you, Y/N. I'll be speaking to the district overseer before sunset to lock in our rates. No one is bleeding us dry for some royal party."
The entire square dissolves into a synchronised mess of shouting, overlapping arguments, and booming laughter. Everyone is interrupting each other with fond irritation, acting exactly like a family that loves a good crisis.
Maeve and Alice eventually turn away from the shouting, grabbing your hand with a burst of energy that takes you by surprise. They drag you down a few narrow side streets where a rather large group of younger women have already gathered outside the fragrant, lavender-draped canopy of the apothecary's porch, their faces flushed bright red with excitement.
"Did you hear the High Courier?!" Alice gasps to the girls, her eyes wide with hope. "Letters are coming by dusk! Oh, gods, please let our street be assigned to The Solar Citadel!!"
"Why the hell would you wanna go all the way up there?" Maeve questions, though her own cheeks are burning a bright, excited pink as she twists a silk ribbon around her fingers. "The Harmon Grounds are much closer, and I heard they serve a better banquet spread. Apparently, a Duke managed to poach a master patissier from Ostlark after the King tried their foreign desserts at the spring summit!"
"Who cares a damn about the pastries? It’s because of the Crown Prince, you absolute dunce!" another girl squeaks, literally jumping up and down on the cobblestones. "Everyone knows Prince Jungkook has to attend the ball at the Solar Citadel! I heard from some travelling merchant that he's an, and I quote, an 'unyielding shadow—a man who can cleave a blacksmith's anvil in two with his bare hands', oh and he never smiles because his heart is made of iron. I just have to find a way to get his attention. He sounds so dreamy, like a brooding fairy tale warrior."
You let out a quick cough, quickly raising your hand to cover your mouth as an uncontrollable snicker threatens to rip straight from your throat.
An unyielding shadow? An iron heart? Never smiles?
"Well, I heard that he's incredibly good-looking, shoulders as wide as a hay cart and a face so handsome it belongs on a minted gold coin," another girl chimes in, leaning in eagerly with wide eyes. "Oh, to be with a proper man, rich and all, instead of these village thickheads who don't even know their way around a clean shirt!"
The entire circle of girls lets out a collective, synchronised swoon at her words, a chorus of dramatic sighs rippling through the group as they nod in agreement.
You bite the inside of your cheek so hard you taste copper, desperately fighting to keep your face completely blank as you lean against the wooden doorframe of the apothecary shop. If only these girls could see their "brooding fairy tale warrior" at one o'clock in the morning. If only they knew that their oh-so-handsome prince spent his midnights covered in your vanilla buttercream, his tongue poking out slightly between his teeth in concentration as he tries, and fails, to pipe frosting onto a cupcake. They were praying to catch the eye of a cold, ruthless ruler, completely unaware that behind closed doors, he is just an oversized puppy who pouts his bottom lip and whines for free tartes because you mercilessly mock his tragic baking skills.
"What’s so funny, Y/N?" Alice asks, narrowing her eyes suspiciously at your trembling shoulders. "You're snickering. D’you know something we don't?"
"Nothing, nothing," you quickly lie, smoothing down your skirt as you force a calm, steady smile onto your lips to divert the dangerous attention away from your secret late-night visitor. You wave your hand dismissively, smoothly sliding the conversation far away from the royal family. "I was just thinking about Duke Augustus down in the valley. You girls are so focused on the prince, you're forgetting the wealthy nobles who actually fawn over the lower village. Didn't one of you say you saw him once?"
"Oh! Oh! Me! Me! I did!" one of the textile girls chimes in eagerly, thankfully taking the bait. "His carriage broke an axle right by the southern gate last spring. He stepped out, and he had the most magnificent..." She trails off, her brow furrowing as she squints at the sky. "...well, he had very beautiful, deep crimson velvet curtains on his windows. And his jacket was... shiny?" Her face contorts as she tries to recall the day.
"Shiny?" Alice repeats, bursting into laughter and shoving her shoulder playfully. "You are completely useless! You stared right at a wealthy duke, and all you can remember is the carriage upholstery and a shiny jacket? You're hopeless."
"The velvet was very very high quality!" the girl protests, flushing red as the rest of the group dissolves into a round of teasing and giggles.
Maeve then turns back to Alice, her practical nature returning as she eyes the tangled ribbons in her hands. "Never mind the curtain velvet, Alice, what are we actually going to wear? If the couriers arrive by dusk, your family's textile shop is going to be completely stripped of every decent fabric by morning."
The girls instantly gasp in unison at the realisation.
"Oh, gods, you're right!" Alice panics, her hands flying to her hair as she looks toward the crowded square. "I need to go hide those gold silk ribbons before the damn mayor's wife buys them all up for her bloody nieces!"
"Wait, Alice, do you still have that bolt of soft cream linen tucked in the back room?" Maeve asks, already moving down the steps.
"I have the linen, but we need shoes!" Alice shouts back, her eyes wide as she grabs your and Maeve's arms, her voice rising above the market din. "The cobblestones at the castles are probably some polished stone we haven’t even heard of; we'll slide right off and break our necks if our soles are worn down! Come on, we need to talk to the cobbler before he quadruples his prices, the greedy bastard."
You watch with a fond, genuinely happy smile as you all turn, completely consumed by dreams of velvet, satin, and castle food, their loud voices blending perfectly into the warm, bustling symphony of the village square. You let out a soft breath, looking up at the hill in the distance where the high, grey stone walls of the Solar Citadel loom against the autumn sky, a quiet warmth settling deep in your chest as you wonder what kind of trouble your midnight visitor is going to cause when he finds out about this.
The latch clicks with a familiar sound and the heavy back door swings open just enough to let a gust of autumn wind sweep inside. Along with the crisp air comes the distinct, grounding scent of rain and cedarwood.
Jungkook slips into the bakery kitchen, letting out a soft breath as he slides his rough wool cloak off his shoulders. Beneath the heavy fabric, he’s wearing his usual disguise: a faded linen tunic with the collar lazily unlaced and dark, work-worn trousers. The imperial crown and the suffocating politics of the citadel don’t exist within these four walls; the moment his leather boots hit your floorboards, he is simply the stubborn boy who routinely breaks into your shop to steal your peace.
"Late... again," you mutter, not looking up from the massive ceramic bowl in front of you. You are vigorously stirring a batch of thick, rich dark chocolate ganache, your arms already aching from the effort. "I was about to lock the door and leave you out there to freeze."
He gasps in playful disbelief, "You wouldn't dare." He strides across the room, stopping right beside you but before you can swat his hand away, his long fingers shoot out, pinching a piece of crystallised sugar from your prep tray and popping it into his mouth.
"Jungkook! Quit stealing the inventory," you chide, glaring at him with a frown that you can't quite keep steady.
"I'm not stealing, I'm assisting, someone has to test it," he grins, his bunny teeth flashing in the dim amber firelight. He rolls up his sleeves, exposing his thick, heavily muscled forearms. "Look, I'll even prove it. Give me a job. What needs doing, boss?"
You eye his enthusiastic expression sceptically, pointing a wooden spoon toward a large sack of white pastry flour and a tin sifter resting on the counter. "Fine. Sift two cups of flour into that shallow bowl. And do it gently, Jungkook. It’s finely ground."
"Gently. Right. I am a master of gentleness," he muses, grabbing the sifter with a look of intense, hyper-focused determination.
He scoops the flour, holds the tin device over the bowl, fingers around the handle. But because the future monarch of the realm possesses entirely too much raw physical strength and absolutely zero domestic finesse, he pumps the handle with a rough burst of enthusiasm.
Poof.
An explosive cloud of white flour bursts directly upwards, completely bypassing the bowl, disobeying all laws of gravity, and erupts straight into his face.
Jungkook freezes dead in his tracks. He stands there in a stunned and unbelieving silence. He feels utterly betrayed. Everything, from his hair to his eyebrows to his lashes, it's all caked in a thick layer of stark white powder. He looks exactly like a poorly sculpted marble statue, his doe eyes blinking slowly through the white dust, bewildered by his own defeat.
A breathless, choked sound escapes your throat, and then you break, letting out a loud, ringing laugh. "Oh, my gods. You look ridiculous."
"It attacked me," he mutters in a whine, his lips parting to puff a tiny cloud of flour from his mouth.
"I did say be gentle, didn't I?" you wheeze, stepping closer and reaching up to gently brush the white powder off his nose and eyebrows with a nearby cloth.
The moment your fingers touch his face, however, a wicked spark ignites in his eyes, one that you know all too well. Before you can register the trap, Jungkook’s hand dives straight into the open flour bin. He grabs a massive handful of the powder and brings his it down with a soft, swift motion, gently tapping your right shoulder.
He pulls his hand away, leaving a perfect, white palm print directly over the fabric of your shirt.
You stop brushing his face, your jaw dropping in disbelief as you look at your marred clothes. "Jungkook! I just washed this!"
"An eye for an eye, baker," he whispers in a mischievous laugh.
"Oh, you are so going to pay for that," you hiss. You grab a small pinch of flour from the prep bowl and flick it straight at his neck.
Jungkook gasps, ducking his head to scoop another handful. Within seconds, the kitchen devolves into a highly competitive, entirely whispered, and completely low-stakes flour war. It's a ritual at this point. You scramble around the central island, ducking behind structural pillars, flinging tiny pinches of white dust at each other, your muffled laughter and frantic, breathless wheezings fill the room.
Right as you are about to launch a particularly large handful of flour at his chest, a sharp sound cuts through the alleyway outside the glass window.
Clank. Clank. Clank.
The scraping of heavy boots echoes against the cobblestones. It’s an imperial guard—a routine night patrol passing dangerously close to the bakery entrance.
Without thinking, you drop the flour, lunging forward to grab Jungkook’s hand. You yank his massive frame downwards, dragging him along with you as you scramble into the narrow space directly beneath the main wooden prep table.
The space is incredibly tight, built only to hold empty wooden crates and extra sacks of grain. You are forced to sit cross-legged, your backs pressed hard against the stone wall, your bodies squished together in the shadows. The air beneath the table is thick and heavily saturated with the scent of rising yeast, melted vanilla extract, and his clean warmth.
Outside the window, the heavy footsteps slow down, the faint orange glow of a guard’s torch flickering through the low glass panes.
You hold your breath, your heart hammering so rapidly against your ribs, you are entirely convinced Jungkook can feel it through his tunic. The sheer absurdity of the situation—the Crown Prince hiding from his own military under a bakery table covered in flour dust—begins to tickle the back of your throat. A desperate bubble of laughter rises in your chest.
Sensing your impending breakdown, Jungkook reacts instantly. He reaches up, his large, warm palm coming down to firmly cover your mouth, trapping your wild giggles against his skin. His doe eyes glitter intensely in the shadows, inches from your own, his eyebrows raised in a silent, desperate command to stay quiet.
But seeing him look so serious, caked in white powder, only makes it worse. Desperate to break his composure too, you slide your hands down to his waist, your fingers finding the gaps in his tunic and ruthlessly tickling his ribs.
Jungkook’s eyes widen in absolute horror. His chest hitches, his entire frame jerking against yours as he fights the intense tickling sensation. A quiet choked snort forms in his throat, and he desperately clamps his jaw shut, his face turning a deep crimson as he struggles not to betray your hiding spot with a loud laugh. He squeezes you tighter against him, silently begging you to stop with his eyes, until the metallic footsteps finally fade away down the street.
The torchlight vanishes. The alley returns to silence.
Jungkook immediately rips his hand away from your mouth, letting out a loud gasp for air as he slumps back against the stone wall, a rich, melodic laugh finally escaping his chest. "You are an absolute demon! You were trying to get me executed by my own captain!"
"You deserved it for the handprint," you whisper-laugh, crawling out from beneath the low table and shaking the dust from your skirts.
Once the adrenaline fades, you turn back to the counter, an excited spark returning to your eyes. "Alright, get up, Your Highness. I need you. I'm experimenting with a more… unusual flavour combination for the harvest rush, and I need a guinea pig who won't lie to me."
Jungkook crawls out from under the table, dusting off his knees, his eyebrows raised in curiosity. "A new flavour? What did you make?"
"It’s a secret," you smirk, reaching onto the side shelf and grabbing a clean, soft white kitchen towel. "And to ensure your answers are entirely unbiased, you aren't allowed to see it. I need your 'royal palate' to be completely objective."
"Ah, an official tasting," Jungkook teases, his voice dropping into a pompous, upper-class drawl as he sits down on a wooden stool. He holds his head high, tilting his chin up arrogantly. "Very well. My palate is internationally renowned for its sophistication. Proceed, milady."
"Shut up and hold still," you laugh, stepping up behind him. You bring the clean towel around his head, carefully tying it over his eyes, blocking out his vision entirely.
When you step back around to face him, the atmosphere shifts subtly. With his eyes covered, Jungkook’s full lips are left entirely exposed, a soft, expectant smile playing at the corners of his mouth. You dip a long wooden spoon into a small ramekin on the counter, scooping up a small, smooth bite of rich, dark chocolate ganache infused with fresh, aromatic rosemary and a hidden kick of a spice recently imported from some distant land.
You hover close to his frame, your breath hitching slightly as you step into his personal space. "Open up."
Jungkook parts his lips, and you carefully slide the wooden spoon into his mouth, ensuring none of the rich glaze messes his face. He closes his mouth, tasting the smooth chocolate, his jaw moving slowly as he processes the complex layers.
Instantly, the prince slips into the role of a dramatic, high-court food critic. He throws his head back, his brow furrowing into a deep, exaggerated scowl as he smacks his lips with theatrical intensity. "Hmm... the texture is velvety, yes. Initial notes of bitter cocoa... structural integrity is solid... but wait." He gasps, his hand flying to his chest as if he’s been struck. "What is this? A pungent note of... pine? No, evergreen? Is that fresh rosemary I taste, baker?"
You hover close to his face, your eyes locked onto his expressions, waiting for the real feedback. "Keep chewing, Your Highness. There's a finish."
A second later, the fiery kick of the spice hits the back of his throat. Jungkook’s blindfolded head snaps forward, his eyes widening beneath the towel as a soft cough escapes him. "Oh, gods! Fire! There is a weaponised spice in this chocolate! Are you trying to poison the lineage?"
"It's cayenne," you laugh, but your smile turns calculating as you watch his intense reaction. Your heart thumps heavily against your ribs, a wave of anxiety crashing over you as you look at the half-empty ramekin. You turn slightly toward the counter, nervously fidgeting with the edge of your apron as you fret under your breath. "Damn it, I knew it. I knew it was too much. The ratios are just off, and the bloody chocolate didn't mask the heat properly, maybe if I—" You trail off, the words escaping your mouth rapidly.
"No, no, hey—sweetheart, stop," Jungkook cuts instantly, his voice cracking with urgency.
He rips off the kitchen towel from his eyes; they're wide and serious as they lock onto yours. The theatrical food critic is entirely gone, replaced by a soft warmth.
"No... It's actually incredible, Y/N, " he assures, "the heat cuts right through the bitterness of the chocolate, and the rosemary makes it feel warm. It's brilliant. Only my girl could pull off something this insane."
Your fingers freeze against the counter. A warmth floods your cheeks, and you quickly turn your face away to organise the spice jars. "Not your girl, Prince Jungkook."
Jungkook lets out a gravelly chuckle, his eyes tracking the pink flush on your neck. He leans forward on the stool, a lazy, incredibly confident smirk spreading across his lips as he tilts his head.
"Not yet," he murmurs softly.
You let out a loud, flustered laugh, swatting at his shoulder with the kitchen towel to hide the absolute chaos his words are causing within your chest. "Keep dreaming, Your Highness."
As the midnight hours continue to roll by, the playful energy in the room slowly begins to settle. You move around the kitchen, cleaning the stray flour from the workstations, whilst Jungkook sits quietly on the stool, his long fingers absentmindedly rolling a stray piece of dough across the wood.
"The palace is an absolute madhouse right now," Jungkook sighs heavily, breaking the silence as he looks out the window toward the citadel on the hill. His shoulders sag with a deep, genuine exhaustion. "My father’s advisors are turning the grand hall upside down, prepping for this ridiculous ball."
"Ridiculous?" you ask, wiping down the stone slab. "I thought royalty loved an excuse to wear velvet and drink imported wine. Besides, the whole village square was worked up about it this morning. The herald made quite the announcement about the two-hundredth anniversary."
An incredibly soft smile breaks across Jungkook’s face as he looks at you. "Yeah? What did everyone say?"
"Oh, it was complete chaos," you chuckle, a warm light entering your eyes as you recall the morning. "Alice and the others were practically hyperventilating, praying our street gets assigned to the Solar Citadel just so she can see the 'brooding warrior prince' in person. And Maeve was trying to convince everyone that the Harmon Grounds serve better food because they swindled a chef from the western kingdoms. Madame Vivienne was already trying to coordinate everything like she runs the place, and then Ken—"
Jungkook watches you as you speak, his head tilting to the side, his large eyes full of galaxies and quiet adoration. He doesn't care about the festival or the banquet; all he sees is you, the love you hold for the people around you. Just the sight of you—so deeply rooted in the warmth of your people—makes his chest ache with warmth.
But he hardens his expression into a bitter scowl as he turns his thoughts back to the citadel. "But the ball itself is a sham, Y/N. It’s an exhausting, fake event full of noblemen who spend three hours flaunting their gold and lying to each other’s faces, even though my father claims it’s a 'celebration of the people.' It’s vanity, nothing more. The only good thing about the entire miserable night is knowing I finally get to see you there. In my world, for once."
You stop wiping the counter, setting the towel down with a soft click. You look at his expectant, hopeful face, a weight tightening in your throat.
"Well... don't get your hopes too high, Jungkook," you say quietly, dropping your gaze to your hands. "Because I've," You hesitate. "I've decided not to go."
Jungkook freezes dead in his tracks.
The prince looks exactly like a deer caught in the blinding glare of a hunter's lantern. He goes rigid, his mouth parting slightly as his eyes widen to twice their size in confusion.
"What?" he stammers, voice cracking slightly as he stands up from the stool. "Sorry, I must not have heard you correctly because it sounded like you said that you aren't going?"
"Well, you heard right," you say. "I'm sure it will be great for people who actually have the luxury of time." A defensive edge enters your voice as you rattle off your long list of reasons not to attend. "Jungkook, be serious. I am incredibly busy. It’s the harvest rush. All of my apprentices have got their official invitations to the outer castles today, and I already promised them the nights off so they could attend. Oh, you should've seen how happy they were! But now I have no one to cover to run the ovens. And besides... I don't even own a ball gown. I have absolutely no idea how to perform those complex court dances. What am I supposed to do there?"
"You're supposed to be with me!" Jungkook protests, his voice rising into a breathless, desperate plea as he scampers around the island to corner you. He grabs your hand, his fingers squeezing yours, his eyes begging. "I don't care about the dresses or the dances, Y/N. I'll stand in the corner with you the entire night. I'll hide you from the dukes. Just please come. For me?"
"No, Jungkook," you say firmly, pulling your hand back with a heavy sigh, though your heart fractures slightly at his desperation. "I'm staying here. My reality is in this kitchen."
Jungkook goes silent.
He stands entirely still in the centre of the room, his head tilting down as his hair falls to hide his eyes. The stubborn prince suddenly looks incredibly small, his chest rising and falling in deep, quiet expansions. A stark disappointment settles over his features, a hidden sadness dulling the usual glitter in his eyes. He tries to open his mouth to beg one last time, but seeing the rigidness in your posture, he clenches his jaw and swallows the words.
He turns away slowly, attempting to hide the raw ache in his expression as he picks up a wooden broom and silently moves to clean the flour from the corner, leaving the kitchen cast in a heavy silence.
Around a week later, the cold morning of a Thursday settles deep into the bones of the village. Outside the bakery windows, a heavy, silver hoarfrost clings to the skeletal branches of the oak trees, and the clean scent of the northern mountain wind cuts through the narrow alleys, carrying the smell of damp earth, fallen pine needles, and the coming winter.
Yet, as the sun begins to peek over the jagged stone spires of the citadel, the physical chill of the village is instantly combatted by the bustling warmth of its people.
Before the first light even hits the cobblestones, the daily symphony of the neighbourhood begins to wake. Smoke twists lazily from stone chimneys, filling the crisp air with the familiar, cosy aroma of burning birchwood. Down the lane, you can hear the deep, booming voice of Bram the burly timber-cutter as he playfully argues with Master Silas, the old cobbler, over a pair of completely worn-out leather boot soles, their shared laughter echoing loudly against the frost-bitten walls. Further up the street, Martha, a weaver, calls out a fond morning greeting to young Tristan, the blacksmith's apprentice, who is already sweeping the ash from the outdoor forge, his breath pluming in white clouds as he smiles at her. The weather makes it a harsh atmosphere, but it is full of nothing but warmth from the people who fill this little corner of the Kingdom.
Inside the kitchen, you wrap your hands around a steaming clay mug of ginger tea, waiting for the brick hearth to heat the room. The scent of sweet vanilla and rising yeast is just beginning to battle the morning draft when a familliar, rhythmic knock echoes against the heavy wood of the back door.
Your brow furrows, and you set your mug down; the dairy courier is early today. You pull back the heavy iron latch only to find the alleyway empty and the golden morning sun bouncing off the frozen stones. Then you look down, and resting right in the centre of your wooden stoop is a rather large rectangular trunk crafted from polished mahogany. It is bound tightly with thick, luxurious silk ribbons in a warm antique gold that contrasts beautifully with the frost on the step.
You hoist the heavy wooden chest inside, your muscles straining as you set it down onto the centre of the stone workstation. With trembling fingers, you untie the gold silk and pull back the heavy lid.
The breath leaves your lungs all at once.
It’s a gown.
You step closer to the counter, leaning over the open trunk with your fingers trembling as you reach into the velvet interior. The moment your bare skin touches the fabric, a soft, involuntary gasp escapes your lips. It feels entirely unlike the stiff canvas of your work aprons or the coarse wool of your winter cloaks; it is a weightless, breathtaking combination of fine-textured overlays, dainty sheer netting, and intricately layered lace.
The entire gown is an ethereal dream of the softest, lightest cream and pale ivory, catching the dim firelight.
With your eyes wide with nothing but wonder, you trace the meticulous craftsmanship of the bodice. It is tightly structured with intricate floral brocade woven into the fabric, sculpting it perfectly. Its sweetheart neckline dips gently, framed by what appears to be an off-the-shoulder collar trimmed with tiny ruffles of stark-white lace, which soften each line. Draped across the front in delicate cascading swags, which gather in the centre, are elegant strands of pearls, each held by ornate gold-toned floral ornaments and two central brooches, one just under the trimmed lace collar, where the waves of fabric flow towards it, dotted by a few pearls, and the other gathering the strands of pearls in the centre just below the chest.
As you hold up the gown, one hand shifts to hold out the sleeves, which are made of ivory lace, starting just below the shoulders and billowing at the elbows into extravagant layered cuffs of ruffles and lace that look like blooming flowers around the wrists. Every edge was finished with intricate embroidery so fine it seemed stitched by hand.
Below the corset, the skirt exploded into a sumptuous volume. The gown flowed into one sweeping, full-length skirt that fell in rich, uninterrupted folds. Rather than being layered, the skirt featured subtle panels. The central front panel was a softer, paler ivory, almost white, its fine floral embroidery catching the light with an almost pearlescent glow. On either side, beginning at the hips, the fabric deepened ever so slightly into a warmer cream, framing the lighter centre. Fine geometric embroidery was revealed as you moved it closer to the lamp on the counter, whilst the centre remained softer in its floral detailing. Near the front, just below the waist, were clusters of gathered fabric blossoms nestled against the skirt, adding texture without interrupting its graceful silhouette. The hem swept outwards into a grand shape, showing its fullness.
A dizziness crashes over you. You have spent your entire life defined by labour, by stained knuckles, scorched fingertips, and the daily grind of survival in the dirt of the lower village. To hold something so unapologetically beautiful, sent mysteriously to your doorstep, makes your throat tighten with an unexpected emotion. You gather a handful of the heavy, pale-cream lace against your chest, burying your face briefly in the luxurious layers before tucking it back into its casing.
You stare down at the gown in confusion, your mind spinning as you try to comprehend how it could've possibly ended up at your doorstep- most likely a mistake, you think. A masterpiece of this calibre simply does not belong in a flour-dusted village bakery; the pearls and the overlay alone must undoubtedly cost far more than what you earn in an entire year. It feels less like a gift and more like a bewildering mystery, leaving you entirely rooted to the floor as the quiet dawn fills the room.
Your eyes move back to the case as you pile the gown back into it, where you find a pair of shoes, but your eyes catch onto a small parchment folded and tucked into a pocket in the velvet roof of the case. It's sealed with a familiar, messy dollop of crimson wax, and your heart does an involuntary flip against your ribs as you reach for it and open it.
You find all-too-familiar, frantic handwriting.
Sweetheart,
Please, please, please don't be angry at me for sending this. I know you gave me a hundred very logical, very stubborn reasons why you shouldn't come to the citadel. I know you're worried about the shop, and the dough, and looking out of place. But I swear to you, if I have to sit on that throne for four hours listening to the high council argue about land taxes without seeing your face in the room, I am going to lose my absolute mind.
I spent three hours threatening the royal court couturier to ensure the corset wouldn't be too tight for you to breathe, and I personally picked this specific fabric. I even made them source a silk that looks exactly like the warm vanilla sugar in your kitchen. It reminded me of you the second I saw it.
I don't care if you don't know the court steps, I'll hold you if you trip. I don't care about the duchesses and princesses and noblewomen. I will stand in the quietest corner of the ballroom with you the entire night if that's what makes you come. I just need you there. Please do this for me? Put on the pearls, let your apprentices have their night too, you all deserve it. I'll be waiting…
Yours,
- JK
P.S. I ordered the shoe soles with an extra-grip leather lining, so you won't slide on the palace marble, so you have no excuses left.
P.P.S. Also, if you even think about smuggling a handful of flour inside those lace sleeves to chuck at me mid-waltz… I will personally have you arrested for high treason.
You press the heavy parchment tightly against your chest, an overwhelmed giggle escaping your lips as you look down at the sea of ivory and pearls. The prince has yet again managed to dismantle every single one of your boundaries with a single box, leaving you defenceless against the absolute warmth of his devotion.
Now you have no choice but to go.
The wooden wheels of the carriage rattle merrily over the rising stone thoroughfare, but the clatter is drowned out by the uncontained chaos of high-pitched giggles inside. The interior of the small coach is a suffocating sea of pastel fabrics, crisp tulle, and the intoxicatingly sweet scent of rosewater and lavender oil.
For the first time all evening, the three of you are finally sitting together under the warm glow of the carriage lantern, completely free to gawk at the beauty of what you are all wearing.
Alice looks like an absolute fairytale creature plucked straight from a winter forest. Her gown, apparently her grandmother’s, is a strapless, sweetheart-neckline masterpiece crafted from endless, weightless layers of the finest dusty slate-blue tulle that poofs out and commands the entire left side of the carriage seat. The structured bodice is intricately detailed with deep blue floral vines and leaf embroidery that seems to grow directly out of the fabric, trailing elegantly down onto the upper billowing layers of her skirt. Draped over her head and shoulders is a matching, ethereal sheer hooded cape-veil that catches the lantern light, pooling around her like a soft morning fog every time she shifts.
"If you launch any of those gold ribbons into my tulle, Maeve, I will personally throw you out of this moving door," Alice warns with a breathless laugh, carefully adjusting the hood of her cape.
On your other side, Maeve is practically vibrating with excitement, her hands smoothing over a gown that could not possibly suit her personality any better. She is wearing an extravagant gown in the softest shades of peach and champagne. The structured bodice features thin-strap sleeves decorated with miniature flowers that sit on her shoulders, and the entire piece is covered in glittering gold-and-bronze floral embroidery that catches the light with every bounce of the carriage. The skirt is a spectacular mountain of multi-layered, tiered frills with scalloped white edges. Each tier cascades masterfully over the next, heavily embroidered with tiny gold blossoms, all pinned at the waist by an over-the-top fabric bow that rests proudly at her hip.
"Oh, please, your tulle is taking up three seats!" Maeve shoots back, her eyes bright and wide as she reaches over to gently pinch one of the weeping pearls on your own pale cream bodice. "I still can't believe you had this hidden away, Y/N. Like a literal high-born lady. Tristan is going to faint dead into his forge if he sees you."
"Tristan won't even be looking at me; he'll be too busy trying not to trip over your tiers," you tease, laughing as you lift your own voluminous ivory skirts to keep them from getting crushed.
The girlish bickering and excited chattering escalate as the carriage pitches higher up the citadel hill, the distant sound of the royal orchestra beginning to drift through the night air. The thrill of the evening has all of you completely breathless, passing a small vanity mirror back and forth to fix stray curls and pinning forgotten ribbons.
But because none of you is remotely accustomed to navigating the ridiculous volume of high-society ballgowns, the universe decides to provide a prompt reality check.
The carriage hits a massive, deep rut in the stone thoroughfare with a violent jolt.
With a collective shriek, the three of you are thrown completely out of your seats. Because the space is so incredibly tight, the movement causes a total, catastrophic collapse of fabric. Maeve’s large peach bow and tiered frills fly directly upward, puffing straight into Alice's face and smothering her. At the exact same moment, the long, weightless train of Alice's dusty blue tulle skirt billows forward like an aggressive wave, wrapping entirely around your head and torso, whilst her hooded veil gets hopelessly tangled around Maeve's arm.
For three seconds, the carriage interior is just a blind, chaotic vortex of muffled shouting and thrashing limbs inside a mountain of cream, peach, and blue lace.
"I can't see!" Alice’s voice comes out all muffled from somewhere inside Maeve’s gold-embroidered skirt. "Maeve, get your bloody blossoms out of my mouth!"
"I'm trying, but Y/N's pearls are caught in my bows!" Maeve wheezes, her head buried beneath a wave of your textured cream panels. "Don't move, nobody move! We are going to rip a seam before we even hit the palace gates!"
You let out a loud helpless snort, trapped blindly beneath a heavy cloud of blue tulle, your hands flailing uselessly as you try to untangle Alice's hood from your hair. The absolute absurdity of the three of you—looking like absolute royalty but currently suffocating in a tangled heap of your own vanity—breaks the tension. The carriage dissolves into a roaring, breathless fit of uncontrollable laughter, all three of you kicking your legs and untangling your skirts with wide, bright smiles as the citadel gates finally loom into view.
The looming arched double doors of the Solar Citadel crest open, and the blinding opulence of the grand ballroom hits the three of you like a physical wave. None of you have ever set foot beyond the outer courtyard gates, and the quick transition from muddy cobblestones to straight luxury leaves you all rooted to the spot, jaws dropped in a collective, awestruck silence.
The palace is absolutely breathtaking. Towering pillars of white marble veined with gold stretch up to a vaulted ceiling so high it feels like its own indoor sky. Thousands of crystal chandeliers hang from the carved beams and painted ceilings, casting a warm, brilliant glow over the sea of spinning nobility. The most striking feature, however, is the architecture at the far end of the room: two symmetrical, grand sweeping staircases curve elegantly upward on either side of the hall, their balustrades gleaming under the torchlight. They lead up to a grand, balcony that spans the width of the wall, overlooking the entire expanse of the ballroom, where a set of even bigger golden double doors sits closed.
"Oh, by the gods," Maeve breathes, her eyes darting frantically from the twin staircases to the gilded cornices. "It’s so... pretty. I feel like if I step too hard, I’m going to break the floor."
"Look at the walls!" Alice gasps, gripping your arm so tightly her nails bite through your sheer lace glove. "They’ve actually painted gold right onto the plaster! Real gold, Y/N! People are walking around breathing in wealth."
As you move further into the room, trying to navigate the volume of your skirts, the initial awe quickly simmers away when you pass a long side table set with refreshments. Maeve instantly stops, squinting down at the tableware with a look of comical scepticism.
"Alright, hold on," Maeve whispers loudly, nudging you and pointing a finger at a small, glittering implement. "Look at these forks. Why on earth does a single fork need four tiny prongs and a golden family crest stamped on the handle? Are the dukes too fragile to spear a potato with regular iron? It looks like a toy for a very wealthy mouse."
Alice lets out a snort, picking up a crystal goblet by its impossibly thin, spindly stem. "And look at these glasses! So thin if I breathe on it too hard, it’ll shatter into a million pieces. How are you supposed to have a proper drink out of a thimble like this? You’d finish the whole thing in one gulp and be left chewing on the crystal."
"Careful, Alice," you whisper-laugh, gently tapping her wrist to make her put it down. "If you break it, you’ll be weaving linen for the next ten years just to pay off the stem."
Giggling and whispering amongst yourselves, the three of you navigate the perimeter of the ballroom, eventually spotting a familiar cluster of younger women from the lower district—including the apothecary's daughters and a few girls from the textile rows—who are all huddled together near a marble pillar, looking equally out of depth. You blend into the group, sharing quiet exclamations about the grandeur of the room, when a blast of brass trumpets echoes from the high gallery.
The chatter in the ballroom cuts off instantly. Every head in the crowd turns, eyes tracking upward toward the high balcony.
The grand doors at the back of the gallery swing open, and the royal family makes their entrance. The King steps out first onto the balcony, his jacket practically dripping with medals, the Queen beside him, draped in heavy crimson velvet. But trailing just half a step behind them is the Crown Prince, followed by what you assume are his sisters and brother, all equally adorned in breathtaking silks and glittering jewels.
Clad in his structured, deep charcoal gala jacket lined with intricate gold filigree, his broad shoulders squared, and his dark hair swept off his forehead, Jungkook looks entirely like a cold commander as he stands at the balcony railing. The boyish, easy smile he wears in your kitchen is gone, replaced by a rigid princely mask.
The King steps up to the central stone podium on the balcony, his booming voice instantly filling the rafters as he begins a grand, sweeping speech about the strength of the lineage and the two hundred years of imperial peace.
"—for two centuries, the Solar Citadel has stood as an unyielding beacon of prosperity!" the King declares, his medals catching the blinding glare of the chandeliers as his voice echoes off the marble pillars. "Tonight, we celebrate not just the endurance of our crown, but the unbreakable bond between the throne and the people who cultivate our lands. Let this grand anniversary serve as a testament to our collective triumph—"
But whilst the nobility listens in rapt silence, the cluster of village girls around you completely lose their minds. The King's formal drone quickly becomes nothing more than background noise to the desperate, hushed, and intensely feral mutterings right in your ear as they gawk up at the high gallery.
"Oh, gods above, look at him," one of the girls whimpers, staring up at Jungkook like he’s a prime piece of meat displayed on a butcher’s counter. “How is it legal for someone to have a jawline that sharp? He doesn't even look real."
"Look at those shoulders," another whispers in awe, clutching her cheeks. "He could order my entire family to the salt mines, and I’d probably thank him for the privilege. He is absolutely delicious."
"And the way he's just standing there, looking down his nose at the entire room like we're all completely beneath him," a third girl gasps, fanning herself frantically with a borrowed lace handkerchief. "It’s utterly infuriating how attractive it is. I don't think I've taken a proper breath since he stepped through those doors."
"Did you see the grip he had on that railing?" the weaver's daughter chimes in, her voice strained as she edges closer to the front of the group. "His hands are bloody ginormous. Look at the veins on his wrists! If he even glances in my direction for a fraction of a second, I’ll dissolve into a total puddle right here on the marble, I’m telling you."
"It’s a bloody sin to hide a frame like that behind gold embroidery," another mutters, her eyes narrowed in laser-focused appreciation. "The royal tailor deserves a promotion. I’ve never seen a jacket do so much heavy lifting in my entire life. He makes every other nobleman in this hall look like a damn sack of flour."
"I heard he dismantled a rogue vanguard in the northern forests last winter," another girl pants, her fingers twisting the fabric of her skirt in agitation. "Seeing him in person... I entirely believe it. He looks like he could snap a sword in half with his bare hands, and frankly, I wouldn't mind if he snapped me next."
"Hush, keep your voices down, someone will hear you!" Alice hisses, though her own eyes haven't drifted from the high balcony for a single second. "But honestly... look at the cut of that waistcoat. It should be a capital offence to look that dangerous in a formal setting. The lords standing next to him look like pale, unbaked suet dumplings."
"If he decides to choose a dance partner from the commons tonight," another girl mutters, her voice dropping into a desperate, hushed prayer, "I am throwing myself directly in front of his leather boots. Even if he tramples my feet, at least I’ll die with his hands on my waist. What a way to go."
You bite the inside of your cheek, a heavy wave of heat rushing to your face as you listen to them gawk over the very man who whined for muffins in your kitchen a few weeks back. With all the duties of this ball and festivities, you haven't seen him in weeks, and you haven't been able to thank him. Now seeing him in front of you, it's like you've finally taken your first breath in a long time.
You raise your eyes, looking past the crowded heads straight up toward the balcony railing.
You watch as Jungkook’s eyes slowly and methodically scan the swirling crowd below. He bypasses the duchesses and ignores the foreign princesses. He is searching, his eyes moving frantically from quadrant to quadrant, but as the seconds tick by, he finds nothing but a sea of unfamiliar faces.
Slowly, the rigid prince mask shifts. A heavy, unmistakable look of disappointment settles over his handsome features, his jaw tightening as the brilliant light in his doe eyes dims into a quiet, crushing sadness. He truly thinks you stayed behind. He thinks his vanilla-scented cream dress is still sitting empty in the mahogany box on your counter, and the raw ache of it leaves him looking incredibly distant.
But just as the King’s voice draws to a final, ringing cadence, Jungkook makes one last, desperate sweep toward the very back of the hall, refusing to give up.
And then, his eyes lock directly onto yours.
The transition is instantaneous. The disappointment vanishes all at once, replaced by an acute wave of relief that hits his features so visibly you can see the heavy tension leave his shoulders from across the room. The rigid monarch cracks; his eyes soften with a deep warmth, and the corners of his lips twitch upward into a private, blink-and-you-miss-it smile meant just for you.
Your heart does a little flip against your ribs. You quickly look down at your skirts, your cheeks burning bright pink as the girls beside you continue to sigh dreamily, completely unaware that the prince had just sent a silent greeting straight to the village baker.
The moment the King finishes his grand speech, the ballroom erupts into roaring applause. With practised, majestic grace, the royal family begins their descent to join the guests. The King and Queen offer a wave to the crowd as they glide down the right staircase, whilst Jungkook trails down the left, his heavy boots clicking uniformly against the marble steps before he is immediately swallowed by a sea of bowing nobility.
As the orchestra swells back to life and the crowd disperses into a chaotic maze of mingling bodies, you seize the opportunity to escape the heat of the group. You slip away towards the far western wall, where rows of long tables are overflowing with extravagant palace desserts and baked goods.
You lean over a long silver tray, inspecting a towering, blown-sugar sculpture housing glazed tarts, your professional brain instantly taking over. "How did they manage to keep this glaze from sweating under the heat of these candles?" you mutter to yourself in bewilderment.
"Stealing the palace inventory already, sweetheart?"
You flinch violently, letting out a small, startled gasp as a warm, heavy presence suddenly materialises directly behind your shoulder.
You whip around, your hand flying to your chest to find Jungkook standing mere inches from you. He is grinning widely, his teeth flashing as he catches his breath, evidently delighted that he managed to sneak up on you. He had clearly known exactly where you would hide the second he made it down those stairs.
But as his eyes lock onto you fully, the teasing laughter dies instantly in his throat.
Jungkook goes still. His breath hitches audibly, his large eyes widening as they slowly burn their way down the length of the gown he had sent to your doorstep. The light of the chandeliers catches the weeping pearls across your chest and the fine-textured overlays of the skirt, making you look heavenly. He is entirely captivated, jaw tightening slightly as a deep flush creeps up his own neck. He doesn't say a word, but the intensity of his gaze leaves you feeling entirely exposed.
Your face burns a deep crimson under his silence. Desperate to find your footing and break the thick tension, you clear your throat and try to pivot back to a witty reply. "You know, it is an actual crime to sneak up on a woman surrounded by high-end sugar works, Your Highness. What if I had knocked over this spun-gold tower? Huh? I would have blamed you entirely."
Jungkook’s smirk slowly returns, though his eyes remain heavy with admiration. "I would have caught it," he murmurs smoothly, stepping a fraction closer. "And I would have caught you."
You roll your eyes, though the burning warmth creeping up your neck unfortunately betrays you. "Did you spend your entire walk down that staircase rehearsing that line, or do they teach 'Advanced Smooth-Talking' as part of standard prince training?"
Jungkook lets out a soft, low chuckle, his eyes crinkling at the corners with that familiar charm. "Actually, I failed standard diplomacy twice. But for you, baker, I am entirely willing to improvise."
You let out a soft, nervous breath, gesturing weakly to his gold-embroidered jacket and the medals pinning his chest. "Look at you. All shiny and regal. Quite the grand life you lead up here behind these stone walls. I suppose you don't even remember what a standard wooden prep table looks like."
Jungkook’s expression shifts instantly. The playful confidence vanishes, replaced by a genuinely anxious defensiveness. He takes another step forward, invading your personal space as his voice drops into a hushed whisper, desperate to ensure you don't misjudge him.
"Y/N, don't say that. I'm serious," he pleads, his doe eyes wide and absolutely vulnerable as he looks down at you. "I don't care about any of this. The jacket is heavy, the medals are hollow, and the people are fake. It’s all just a stupid performance my father makes me play. Don't look at me like I'm one of them. Please. I am exactly the same idiot who ruined your flour."
Seeing the raw, immediate panic in his eyes, your heart softens. The teasing edge disappears from your posture, and you offer him a gentle, reassuring smile, your lace-gloved fingers briefly brushing against the solid gold trim of his sleeve to ground him. "Hey. Relax. I know, Jungkook. I know exactly who you are. I was just teasing you."
A visibly relieved breath escapes his lips, his shoulders sagging as he smiles softly down at you.
But before the quiet intimacy of the moment can settle, a stiff, elderly royal official clad in high-court robes cuts directly through the space beside you, bowing rigidly. "Your Royal Highness, forgive the disruption, but the Duke of Alkort requires an immediate audience regarding an urgent matter. The King requests you join them in the council chamber."
Jungkook’s jaw instantly tightens into a hard line, a low, thoroughly frustrated groan forming deep in his throat. He shoots you a desperately reluctant look over his shoulder as the official firmly guides him away, his eyes silently begging you to stay right where you are until he can break free again.
The endless drone of the high court is enough to make Jungkook want to unsheathe his ceremonial sword and drive it straight through the polished floor. He just wants to get back to the western wall. He just wants to get back to you. His mind is replaying the sight of you from only moments ago—how utterly breathtaking you look, the way the light catches your face, how your curls sweep across your shoulders and back, the soft ivory fabric framing your silhouette so perfectly it makes his chest ache. Knowing you're in the very same room but completely out of his reach is just plain torture.
"—and if the southern ports alter the tariff by even a fraction of a per cent, the textile guilds will riot before the winter solstice," Lord Bamblebry wheezes, his breath smelling faintly of stale wine and pickled plums.
Jungkook keeps his jaw locked, his shoulders squared, but twitching every so often, in his jacket. He offers a single, rigid nod, the golden filigree lining his collar digging uncomfortably into his skin. To his right, his father is nodding sagely, while his mother gently presses her hand against Jungkook’s arm, subtly steering him toward a waiting line of high-born ladies.
"Jungkook, dearest," the Queen murmurs, her voice smooth as silk but carrying the weight of an imperial decree. "You remember Princess Isabella of the Western Isles. And this is the Duchess Evelyn."
Jungkook forces his features into a cold, perfectly practised princely mask. He bows precisely from the waist, his voice flat. "A pleasure, Ladies."
Just behind his shoulder, a barely audible and highly unroyal snort sounds. Jungkook doesn't need to turn around to know that his brother, Taehyung, is standing right there, thoroughly enjoying his misery.
"Look at you," Taehyung whispers in a low, teasing hiss, partially hidden from their parents' view by the grand velvet banners hanging behind the dais. "You look like a tax collector who just found a boot print on his ledger. Smile, brother. Princess Isabella has been practising that tilt of her head for three weeks just to impress you. Don't let her down."
Jungkook’s knuckles turn white behind his back, trying to fight off a chuckle. He desperately wants to plant his boot directly onto Taehyung’s foot, but with the King standing a mere two feet away, he is entirely trapped. He has to stand there and just take it.
"You look quite handsome tonight, Your Royal Highness," Princess Isabella murmurs, leaning a fraction too close as her silk fan flutters like a trapped moth, her eyes boldly tracing the sharp line of his jaw. "I was just telling the Duchess that the maestro must have composed this opening waltz with a true conqueror in mind. I can only hope the rumours are true and that the Crown Prince is just as captivating on the dance floor as he is on the battlefield... Perhaps you will allow me to find out for myself later?"
He mutters something incoherently at Annabella—or Elizabeth, or whatever her name is, and his mother quickly takes over the conversation. Soon, their voices become nothing more than a shallow, high-pitched buzz against the grand backdrop of the orchestra, fading into total white noise as his focus narrows once again on the crowd, desperately seeking a single glimpse of pale lace and soft curls.
He bypasses the rows of wealthy nobility, ignoring the flashing jewels and bright silk gowns. He is searching. His eyes move frantically from quadrant to quadrant, his heart hammering a heavy, anxious rhythm against his ribs.
Where is she?
After what feels like an eternity, he locates you near a marble pillar, but the instant he does, any lingering warmth in his chest vanishes, replaced by a flash of possessive fury.
A steady, infuriating stream of men is beginning to flock to you like vultures. Because of the beauty of your gown, the fools clearly mistake his baker for another noblewoman.
First, a greasy young baron in an overly elaborate teal velvet coat approaches you, bowing entirely too low. Jungkook watches from across the distance as the man flashes a practised, arrogant smirk, his hand reaching out far too close to yours as if attempting to steal a touch. His eyes narrow into a lethal slit, his jaw locking so hard his teeth ache. Truthfully, he can't even entirely blame the bastard; under the blinding glare of the chandeliers, you look so devastatingly beautiful it’s a miracle the entire ballroom hasn't stopped to stare. But the realisation does absolutely nothing to quiet the jealousy in his chest.
No sooner than when you politely navigate away from the baron does a second man move in: a tall, pompous knight with a jewel-encrusted signet ring. The man stands entirely too close, gesturing airily towards the centre of the ballroom with a smug confidence. He tracks the way the knight moves into your personal space, clearly trying to impress you, but obviously oblivious to the fact that you are entirely out of his league. It makes Jungkook's hand itch to clamp onto the hilt of his sword as he watches you handle the unwanted attention.
Then comes the final straw. A younger lordling steps up, offering you a glittering glass of crystal wine. The bastard leans in entirely too close to your ear, his head dipping low to whisper something that makes you tilt your head. Seeing another man that close to your skin—seeing how effortlessly you command the attention of the highest bloodlines just by existing in your grace—snaps the last of his restraint. You look too perfect, too alluring. He can't blame them for wanting a piece of your light, but he will damn well tear this kingdom apart before he lets anyone else claim it. His entire body goes rigid with a dangerous protective instinct.
Every muscle in his frame coils tight, jealousy clawing at his throat. He expects the onslaught to stop, but the universe seems determined to test his absolute limits.
Before the lordling can even step away, a smooth, dashing foreign count with a silver-tipped cane swoops into the vacuum. The count bows with an insufferable, theatrical grace, and to Jungkook's absolute horror, he actually has the audacity to reach out, take your lace-gloved hand, and press his lips to the back of it.
The Prince's vision goes dark at the edges, literally. He takes a half-step forward, his boots clicking sharply against the stone, ready to tear down the stairs and physically rip the man away, but he feels his father’s heavy, warning gaze snap towards him, silently pinning him to the spot. He is a prince first. He is a caged animal second.
He is forced to stand there, helpless, as a fifth man joins the fray: a prominent earl’s son, accompanied by a pair of arrogant young high-court poets. They surround you in a tight semi-circle, preening and posturing like peacocks. One of the poets gestures theatrically, clearly reciting some syrupy, rehearsed verse directly to you. He watches you tilt your head, a polite, amused little smile brushing your lips.
That smile seals their fate. The sight of you smiling at another man—even out of mere politeness—sets his entire soul on fire. The jealousy is no longer just simmering; it is a raging, blinding inferno consuming his chest. He can feel the physical restraint of his role snapping bone by bone.
Behind him, Taehyung continues to thoroughly enjoy his brother's misery. "Brother, your jaw is clenching so hard you're about to crack a tooth. Princess Isabella is practically offering herself to you on a silver platter, and you are far too consumed by the pillar near the refreshments. If you glare any harder at that little circle of suitors, they’re going to spontaneously combust. Seriously, Jungkook, breathe. Your knuckles are turning purple."
But then, the strings of the orchestra swell even louder, shifting into a sweeping tempo as the formal waltzes begin. The centre of the ballroom dissolves into a swirling vortex of colourful silk and velvet.
He refuses to wait a single second longer. Ignoring his mother’s hurried call, Princess Isabella's offended gasp, and Taehyung’s highly amused chuckle, he turns on his heel. He breaks cleanly through the circle of nobility, cutting through the crowd, straight towards you.
"—and so I told my chief stable-master, if the stallion cannot trace its lineage back at least four generations, I simply will not ride it," a young viscount drones on, gesturing airily with a pale, heavily ringed hand.
You offer a strained, polite smile, nodding as your mind begs for an immediate structural collapse of the ceiling to rescue you. The man’s powdered wig is sitting slightly askew, and he has spent the last ten minutes completely convinced you are a lady of high birth from some distant northern estate.
"I am sure a woman of your obvious, exquisite refinement understands the clear, exhausting weight of managing a manor of that magnitude, Lady... forgive me, I don't believe I caught your family name?" he asks, leaning in with a syrupy, patronising smile.
You open your mouth, unsure of what to say; however, a deep, familiar voice cuts through the air like a blade.
"She is with me."
Your breath hitches in surprise, a wave of relief washing over you as you look up. Jungkook has yet again materialised out of the crowd, towering over the young lord like a lethal shadow. The boyish warmth you know from your kitchen is entirely gone; his features are set in a rigid expression, his eyes fixing the viscount with a gaze so cold it feels like a physical threat.
The young lord stiffens instantly, his entire body going rigid as he recognises the gold filigree and medals on Jungkook's gala jacket. He pales drastically, his jaw trembling as he takes a hasty step back. "Y-Your Royal Highness," the viscount stammers, bowing so fast and so low his powdered wig nearly slips off his forehead. "Forgive me. I did not realise—I was just leaving. Have a wonderful evening."
Without waiting for a dismissal, the man backs away so frantically that he nearly trips over his own silk robes, vanishing into the crowd within seconds.
You let out a long, breathless sigh, turning to face the prince. You raise an eyebrow, a cheeky smile breaking across your face as you take in his tight jaw and the dark, simmering look in his eyes. "Well, that was quite the display of royal authority, Your Highness," you tease in a hushed whisper. "Should I be worried about that poor man's life, or were you just desperately jealous?"
Jungkook’s eyes lock onto yours, the terrifying prince persona melting away, leaving him looking raw and intensely focused. "Can you blame me?" he murmurs, his voice a rough rumble that vibrates right through your chest. "Look at you, Y/N. You are wearing that dress, looking like an absolute dream, and I have spent the last hour and something trapped in a corner watching half the peerage try to court my baker. It’s a miracle I haven't had them all thrown into the dungeons."
A deep, burning blush rushes to your cheeks at his words, the intensity of his gaze leaving you entirely breathless. But you quickly gather your wits, determined not to let him have the last word. "Oh, so the big, scary Crown Prince can't handle a few noblemen making polite conversation? What happened to the brooding leader who handles rogue armies in the north? Brought down by a wig and a bit of small talk?"
Jungkook’s proud posture breaks instantly. His shoulders drop a fraction, his chin dipping as his bottom lip puckers out in a classic, wounded, doe-eyed expression. He looks exactly like a kicked puppy—the exact same ridiculous look he uses when he begs for a chocolatine at your shop.
"You are incredibly cruel to me, baker," he mutters softly, his eyes wide and pleading. But the look is immediately replaced by a spark of mischief that ignites in his eyes. "But if I have to monopolise your time to save my own sanity, I will gladly play the part."
Before you can ask what he means, he steps fully into your space, completely catching you off guard. He swiftly slides his large, bare fingers through your lace-gloved ones, locking them securely, and begins pulling your skirts straight toward the centre of the roaring dance floor.
Panic hits you. You dig the heels of your shoes into the floor, pulling back against his iron grip. "Jungkook, wait! Stop!" you whisper frantically, your eyes widening as the swirling couples surround you. "I can't dance! I don't know the etiquette, I don't know the steps—I am going to humiliate the both of us."
Jungkook stops, but he doesn't let go of your hand. Instead, he turns to face you fully, stepping so close that the rest of the crowded ballroom fades into nothingness. He raises his free hand, his bare fingers gently cupping the side of your neck, his thumb resting just beneath your jawline. The warmth of his skin is intoxicating, instantly silencing the chaos in your mind.
"Hey," he whispers, his doe eyes incredibly soft, and reassuring. "Look at me. Ignore the music, ignore the others. Do you trust me?"
You swallow hard, your fingers tightening around his hand. "Of course I do," you breathe softly.
"Then just follow my lead," he says, smiling, his brilliant bunny teeth flashing for a fraction of a second. "It's much easier than you think."
With a slow yet deliberate grace, Jungkook guides your left hand up, placing it gently onto his shoulder. Your fingers curl into the heavy charcoal fabric, brushing against the gold epaulettes, feeling the hard, steady muscle beneath. He then slides his own large palm down to the small of your back, resting it firmly against the structured panelling of your corset. The heat of his hand burns through the fabric, pulling you a fraction closer until the weeping pearls across your chest are brushing against the gold medals pinning his chest.
"Left foot back," he murmurs, his gaze locked onto yours as his body executes a small, fluid shift. "Now step to the side. Perfect. Just follow my weight."
The orchestra swells, the violins spinning a grand, sweeping melody that echoes through the vaulted ceilings. Step by step, Jungkook moves you through the crowd. It is the most intense experience of your life, and that's saying something considering you are a survivor of Monday morning rush hours at the bakery; the world blurs into a meaningless smear of light, leaving nothing but the rhythmic sway of his broad chest, the solid weight of his hand on your waist, and the faint, comforting scent of cedarwood surrounding you.
But navigating a massive high-society ballgown is far more treacherous than walking across a bakery floor.
As the music quickens into a sweeping turn, your mind jumbles the pattern. You take a step forward instead of back, and the heavy leather sole of your shoe comes down squarely and solidly onto the top of Jungkook’s polished shoe.
Thud.
You gasp audibly, your face instantly burning crimson as you stumble against him, the layered lace underskirt rustling around your ankles. "Oh, gods! I am so sorry! I told you I'd—"
Before you can pull away in shame, Jungkook’s grip on your waist tightens. He catches you effortlessly, absorbing your entire weight against his chest without a single wobble, the extra-grip leather soles he had custom-ordered doing their job flawlessly.
A low, entirely melodic chuckle bubbles up from his chest. He doesn't look annoyed in the slightest; if anything, the mistake only deepens his adoration. He doesn't let you stop. He seamlessly restarts the pattern, his thigh brushing against yours through the heavy cream fabric as he guides you back into the spinning rhythm of the waltz.
"I told you, baker," he whispers, leaning his head down so his warm breath tickles the shell of your ear, sending a delicious shiver straight down your spine. "I've got you. Just spin with me."
You let out a breathy laugh, your initial fear melting away entirely into the magic of the moment. You let him spin you through the sea of nobility, your pale skirts sweeping outwards into a grand, beautiful shape, completely held by the prince who would rather burn his own palace to the ground than let you fall.
After some time, the initial waves of panic have now faded, replaced by a rush of adrenaline and glee. Against all odds, you actually find yourself having fun. The intricate pattern of the waltz clicks into place in your mind, and your shoes move in perfect, fluid sync with his large, steady steps. The voluminous skirts swirl around your ankles like sea foam as he effortlessly guides you through the spinning crowd.
"See? I told you," he murmurs down to you. The intimidating Crown Prince persona is entirely discarded, leaving only the boy who sneaks into your kitchen at midnight. "You're a natural, baker. I might have to appoint you as the official imperial dance instructor."
You let out a breathy, genuine laugh, your fingers tightening slightly against the heavy charcoal fabric of his shoulder. "Don't get ahead of yourself, Your Highness. I am currently concentrating with the intensity of a woman trying not to burn a batch of expensive saffron buns. If you speed up the tempo even a fraction, we are both going down."
He lets out a low chuckle, his hand at the small of your back pressing a fraction firmer, holding you steady against his chest. "Then I will keep the orchestra exactly at this pace for the rest of the night. I have no intention of letting you go anywhere."
For a few beautiful, stolen minutes, the grand ballroom feels incredibly small. The overwhelming noise of the orchestra and the chatter of the court fade into the background as the two of you simply talk, the palace's formality melting away.
You tiptoe slightly to glance over his shoulder, tracking a group of older men standing near the grand entrance. "Is it a legal requirement for the northern lords to compete in headwear size, or did Lord Karlstork genuinely believe three feet of crimson velvet was a subtle choice?"
Jungkook suppresses a smile, keeping his steps perfectly steady as he guides you in a smooth circle. "It’s a regional tradition, actually. The larger the hat, the more timber land they claim to own. Last winter, his cousin wore one with actual silver pheasant feathers that kept clipping the low-hanging chandeliers during the banquet."
"I'm surprised the royal guard didn't confiscate it as a safety hazard," you say, a genuine laugh escaping your lips.
"They wanted to," he laughs with you, shifting you slightly to the left to avoid a swirling Duke. "But my father insisted it was a necessary 'cultural display' to keep the peace. Speaking of hazards, if anyone offers you the spiced plum wine from the golden fountains near the terrace, politely decline."
You look up at him, curious. "Is it that bad? The viscount from earlier was talking about it like it was liquid gold."
"It’s awful," Jungkook says plainly, a faint, honest grimace touching his lips. "It’s supposedly a rare vintage blend from the southern valleys, but the head cellarmaster waters it down with pear juice and honey to make the barrels last through the anniversary week. It just tastes like wet sugar and copper. I spent the entire opening reception looking for a quiet corner or a potted fern to pour mine into."
You let out a breathy chuckle. "The future king, sabotaging the palace greenery because he can't stomach his own luxury."
"I would honestly prefer a mug of that bitter ginger tea you brew in the mornings," he admits, his expression relaxing, the tight tension in his shoulders finally vanishing. "At least that actually tastes like something real. And it doesn't give you a headache after two sips."
You pull back just a fraction, matching his smooth steps whilst giving him a look of indignation. "Excuse me? It is not bitter. It is robust. There is a very distinct, deliberate science to that recipe."
He raises an eyebrow, a quiet chuckle vibrating against your palm on his shoulder. "Robust? Y/N, the first time I drank it, I genuinely thought my throat was on fire. I am fairly certain it stripped the top layer of skin right off my tongue."
"That is because you drank it in three straight gulps instead of sipping it like a normal human being," you counter, steering with him as he guides you seamlessly around a slower couple. "The ginger needs to be that strong to actually counteract the damp weather. If I watered it down with extra honey, the way your palace cellarmasters apparently do with the wine, it wouldn't do anything to stop you from catching a cold. You should be thanking me. It is medicinal."
"Medicinal is a very generous word for a beverage that doubles as weapon," he murmurs, though the bright, genuine warmth crinkling the corners of his eyes gives him away. "But I suppose I can't argue with the results. My head hasn't felt that clear in months."
"Exactly," you say, thoroughly satisfied with your victory. "So the next time it rains and you show up at my back door looking like a drowned rat, you will drink your 'weapon' without a single complaint."
You both settle into a comfortable silence, tilting your head slightly, you take in the faint lines of exhaustion under his eyes that even the grand lighting can't entirely hide. "How long were you actually stuck in that council meeting before you managed to escape?"
He lets out a long, heavy sigh. "Too long. Lord Bamblebry spent forty-five minutes arguing about the structural integrity of grain silos, and then the treasury minister brought out a stack of ledgers detailing the exact cost of replacing the stable roof tiles. I think I dissociated somewhere around the third ledger."
"A thrilling life you lead," you remark dryly, following his lead as he flawlessly navigates a tight turn past a group of laughing countesses. "Here I thought you spent your afternoons deciding the fate of the realm, not listening to roof tile logistics."
"Most of statecraft is just elderly men arguing about logistics," he confesses, a wry, grounded smile touching his lips. "The rest of it is trying to stay awake while they do. At one point, Taehyung actually tried to pass me a note under the table, but my father intercepted it before it could reach me."
A small smile hitches your lips. "What did the note say?"
"It was just a very poorly drawn caricature of Bamblebry sleeping with his mouth open," Jungkook murmurs, his eyes crinkling at the corners with quiet, genuine amusement. "My father confiscated it without a single word, but I could see his jaw twitching. He was trying not to laugh. He made Taehyung sit through the rest of the meeting without any wine as punishment."
You shake your head, the absurdity of the royal family behind closed doors making the grand, intimidating palace feel just a little bit more human. "You all are completely ridiculous."
"We really are," he agrees softly, his gaze entirely steady as he looks down at you, the weight of the crown forgotten for this one, uninterrupted moment.
But then, the grand rotation of the crowd shifts.
As he spins you in a wide, sweeping arc toward the front of the room, the dense sea of dancing nobility parts for a split second, opening a clear, unobstructed line of sight straight to the high royal dais.
Your eyes involuntarily wander upward, and the laughter dies instantly in your throat.
Sitting rigidly upon their golden thrones, the King and Queen are watching. There is no celebration in their expressions; their posture is terrifyingly regal, and their eyes—sharp, calculative, and entirely sub-zero—are locked directly onto you. The Queen's gaze traces the fine lines of your dress with discerning scrutiny, whilst the King’s heavy brow is furrowed. They are clearly observing this mysterious, unannounced 'noblewoman' holding their son's undivided attention, and the heavy weight of their collective disapproval hits you deep. The warmth evaporates from your veins.
He notices the stiffness in your frame immediately. His eyes darken with concern, his gaze tracking yours up to the dais. A hard, protective tension returns to his jaw, but he seamlessly keeps the rhythm of the dance going, shielding your body from their view as the final notes of the violins begin to taper off to a grand finish. As the final crescendo hits, his hand tightens securely at the small of your back, and he smoothly dips you low toward the floor. The unexpected, weightless rush of the movement makes your breath catch, your skirt billowing out around you. He lifts you back up to your feet in a single, effortless motion, bringing you close enough that your chests brush. His doe eyes soften, crinkling at the corners with a quiet, private warmth meant solely to pull you out of your fear. Seeing the tiny, startled smile that finally breaks across your lips, the hard tension in his jaw dissolves, his thumb brushing against your waist in a silent promise before the final applause roars through the hall.
The music stops, and a roaring wave of applause fills the vaulted ceilings. The couples around you separate, bowing and curtsying to one another.
As he takes your hand to execute a perfectly formal, public bow, he leans his head down. His lips brush the very edge of your ear, his warm breath sending a shiver straight down your spine.
"Meet me in the eastern gardens. By the pavilion. In half an hour," he whispers.
Before you can even breathe an answer, he pulls back, offering you a perfectly polite, detached nod meant solely for the eyes of the court. Almost instantly, a high-ranking military commander and a group of foreign delegates descend upon him, politely but firmly pulling him away toward the King's council chambers.
Left exposed and alone, you swallow the lump of anxiety forming in your throat and quietly slip through the crowd. You make your way toward the long, silver-laden refreshment tables near the perimeter, desperately needing a glass of water to steady your hammering heart and shake off the lingering phantom chill of the King and Queen's icy stares from the dais.
You reach out for a crystal goblet, when a smooth, measured voice speaks up right beside you.
"A truly captivating performance."
Your muscles lock. You slowly turn your head to find an older, impeccably dressed royal official standing an arm's length away. The golden crest of the High Council is pinned sharply to his midnight-blue doublet. He doesn't look at you directly; instead, his calculating eyes remain fixed on the elaborate ice sculpture in the centre of the food table, his hands casually folded behind his back.
"The Crown Prince rarely grants his undivided attention to anyone, let alone an unfamiliar face," the advisor continues, his tone perfectly polite, yet carrying an underlying edge that makes the air turn instantly cold. "I have managed the court registry for over two decades, and yet, I find myself entirely unable to place your house or your lineage, my dear."
You tighten your grip on the crystal glass, keeping your expression as guarded as possible. "The invitations were to the entire Kingdom, and I prefer to keep a low profile, my lord."
"A wise choice," the official murmurs, finally tilting his head just enough to fix you with a heavy, discerning look. "But an impossible one if you intend to stand so close to the future King. You see, the court is a very delicate ecosystem. His Royal Highness is not merely a man; he is the absolute property of the state. His dances, his conversations, his future—they are all carefully mapped out by the throne to ensure the security of the realm."
He steps just a fraction closer, his voice dropping to a quiet, chilling whisper that carries perfectly over the clinking champagne glasses.
"We may not know exactly which minor province or quiet corner you crawled out of, but the court does not tolerate anomalies. You wore a beautiful dress, and you caught a young prince's fleeting curiosity for a single evening. But do not mistake his kindness for an invitation into his world. A pretty gown can mimic nobility, but it cannot alter the reality of who you are, or where you truly belong."
The weight of the class divide hits you all at once. The advisor doesn't know your secret, but his words make the high stakes of your situation terrifyingly clear: the palace is watching him, and they will never accept someone like you standing by his side. You're not even completely sure what this is between the two of you. Between you and Jungkook.
"Enjoy the rest of the banquet," the official concludes with a thin, bloodless smile, offering a curt bow of his head. "But remember your place before the night ends. The court has a very efficient way of filtering out those who do not belong."
Without waiting for a response, he smoothly glides back into the crowd, leaving you standing entirely alone by the silver trays, your heart hammering against your ribs as the cold reality of high society closes in around you.
The cool night air of the gardens does little to ease the sting of the advisor’s words in your chest, but the moment he emerges from the shadows, the chill vanishes entirely. He doesn't ask questions, and he doesn't let you wait in the anxiety. Catching your hand in his, a quiet, purposeful look passes over his handsome features as he quickly whisks you away from the open terrace, steering you toward a small, ivy-covered iron door embedded deep in the fortress wall.
He guides you deep into the castle's forgotten interior, bypassing the main thoroughfares for a labyrinth of narrow, deserted corridors and winding stone staircases. This part of the citadel is abandoned for the night, draped in heavy shadows and lit only by the faint, silver moonlight filtering through the high, arched windows.
"Jungkook, seriously, where are we going?" you ask for the fifth time in the span of two minutes, your voice a hushed but frantic whisper as you try to keep up with his long strides.
"It's a secret," he murmurs back, his grip warm and firm on your hand as he pulls you down a long, echoing hallway.
"But I don't like secrets. Are we going to the royal treasury? Am I about to become an accidental accomplice to an imperial heist?" Before he can even answer, your eyes catch on an incredibly elaborate, floor-to-ceiling tapestry depicting a mythic gryphon battle. "Oh, wait, look at the threading on that! Is that actual silver wire?"
You twist your wrist, trying to break out of his grip to step closer and touch the intricate fabric, but he doesn't even break his stride. With an amused huff, his large palm slides effortlessly from your hand to your waist, smoothly pulling you right back to his side and steering you forward before your fingers can even brush the wall.
"Yes, it's silver. No, we aren't stealing it," he whispers down to you with a charmed smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "And keep your voice down, sweetheart."
"You're the one dragging me through the dark," you point out, your shoes clicking softly against the stone. Exactly five seconds later, you drift toward a great arched window. "Oh, the moonlight through that stained glass is so pretty—let me just look at the—"
"Y/N," he sighs playfully. His arm wraps fully around your middle this time, his broad shoulder brushing yours as he gently reels your entire body back into the centre of the corridor before you can wander off again. "You are remarkably easily distracted for someone who was just panicking about high-society etiquette. Focus."
"I am focusing! I'm focusing on the architectural genius of your ancestors," you argue, tilting your head up to look at him with a defiant pout. "Now, for the last time, tell me where we're—"
The two of you are making quiet, rapid progress toward the lower levels, when a metallic ring echoes through the vaulted hallway ahead.
The heavy clank-clank-clank of iron-shod boots reverberates against the stone. It is the elite guard, moving on a high-alert patrol.
His reaction is instantaneous. The easy-going prince evaporates in a single heartbeat. Before a gasp can even form in your throat, he wraps an arm around your waist, yanking you backwards into a tight alcove concealed behind a heavy, dust-laden velvet tapestry.
He presses his heavy, solid frame flush against yours, trapping you securely between the cold stone wall and the rigid muscle of his chest. There isn't a single millimetre of space left between you. Before you can make a sound, his large palm cups firmly over your mouth, sealing your lips, his thumb resting gently against your burning cheek to hold you.
In the thin sliver of moonlight filtering through the gap in the tapestry, you see an entirely different side of him. This is the lethal commander. His features are set in a rigid line of white-hot steel, his usual wide eyes narrowed into calculating slits as he tracks the shadows moving past the curtain. Every single muscle in his broad frame is locked, coiled like a spring, prepared to unsheathe his sword and cut down anyone who dares to look behind the fabric. The raw, protective intensity radiating off him is overwhelming; he is a shield of muscle, ready to protect you at all costs.
You hold your breath, your heart hammering wildly against his chest as the heavy footsteps of the guards slowly pass by the tapestry and fade into the distance.
Only when the corridor falls silent does the lethal tension drain from his jaw. He lets out a slow, breathy exhale against the crown of your head, gently lowering his hand from your mouth. He offers you a soft, reassuring nod, his fingers sliding down to lace with yours as he guides you out of the alcove and down the final flight of stairs.
It's when he pushes open heavy oak doors do you stop dead in your tracks, jaw dropping in absolute awe at what he's showing you.
The grand kitchens.
The space is staggering. It is a sprawling, cavernous hall of white marble and gleaming copper. Rows of pristine wood-fired hearths line the walls, and vast prep tables stretch out across the floor, immaculate and empty for the night.
You instantly forget the danger, the guards, and the heavy weight of the ballroom, blabbering in excitement as you step toward the nearest station. "Jungkook, look at the size of these ovens! And this marble—it’s seamless, the temperature must stay exactly cool enough for rolling out the dough. Oh, gods, look at the copper pots, wait, is that me? They're polished so well I can see myself! Look how many spice racks—are those actual vanilla pods from the eastern colonies just sitting out?"
He doesn't care about the ovens. He doesn't look at the marble, or the copper, or the sprawling wealth of the imperial pantry.
Instead, he simply leans back against the edge of a central table, folding his arms across the charcoal fabric of his jacket. He is utterly captivated. His eyes soften as he watches you wander the space. A besotted smile curves his lips, his chest rising and falling with a quiet, intense happiness just listening to the eager cadence of your voice. The whole court could be hunting for him, but as he watches the animated flush on your cheeks and the brilliant, joyful spark in your eyes, he knows he is exactly where he belongs.
You turn toward a long shelf of imported glass jars, your fingers hovering eagerly over the lids. "—and if they keep the spices organised by region like this, it means the pastry chefs must have a completely separate pantry just for the candied fruits! Jungkook, do they actually—"
He finally pushes off the massive central table, a soft, helpless laugh cutting through your breathless rant as he steps right into your space. He catches your hand, his large, warm fingers folding over yours to gently pull your attention away from the spice racks.
"If I leave you in here any longer, you're going to start kneading dough in that ballgown," he murmurs. "Come on. I want to show you the rest of the world."
He guides you away, despite your protests, to see where they organise the flour, from the gleaming marble of the imperial kitchens, and leads you through a narrow, stone-carved service door that opens onto a forgotten spiral staircase. The climb is steep and the cold air whistling through narrow arrow-slits in the fortress wall, but his hand remains steadily wrapped around yours.
When he pushes open the heavy oak hatch at the top, the vast, ink-black sky opens up above you, brilliant with a thousand glittering stars.
He pulls himself up through the hatch to the rooftop first, the cool night wind immediately catching the dark strands of his hair. Turning back around, he reaches down into the opening, his large hands wrapping around your waist to lift you up effortlessly. He hoists you onto the tiled roof as if you weigh absolutely nothing, a smug, self-satisfied grin flashing in the moonlight.
"Honestly, the High Court should add 'personal elevator' to my official list of duties," he teases, leaning in slightly with a cocky wink. "Good thing I have the muscles for it, or you’d still be stuck down there. Pretty impressive, right?"
You roll your eyes and look at him flatly. "Yes, truly legendary, Your Highness. If only those impressive muscles had helped you lift that fifty-pound sack of flour three weeks back without exploding it across my entire floor."
Jungkook’s smug grin instantly drops, his bottom lip jutting out into a dramatic, exaggerated pout as a soft whine escapes him. "Hey! I told you that sack was structurally compromised! The seams were clearly defective. You're never going to let me live that down, are you?"
"Not a chance," you laugh, the cool night breeze whipping a stray lock of hair across your face. "You looked like a pathetic ghost standing in the middle of my pantry. It is officially etched into my memory forever."
He huffs, crossing his arms over his broad chest, though the stubborn sparkle in his eyes betrays his faux irritation. "I am a respected Prince and military commander. People whisper my name in fear on the battlefield."
"And my kitchen counters whisper your name in absolute dread."
Jungkook lets out a soft chuckle, the mock offence melting away.
"Come on," he murmurs as he extends a hand to guide you to a small ledge on the sloping tiles. "Let's sit before you decide to bring up the time I accidentally cracked an entire crate of eggs."
"Oh, I forgot about the eggs!" You tease, gladly sliding your hand into his palm as he guides you over the uneven roof.
Once you have both settled, and the adrenaline of the night has finally faded, a quiet, vulnerable stillness settles between you. You look down at the ivory fabric of your gown, your fingers gently tracing the intricate textured overlays.
"Jungkook," you say softly, your voice carrying over the mild rush of the wind. "I haven't actually said it yet. Thank you. For the dress, truly. It’s... It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, and you really didn't have to. But if you think a few strands of pearls and a bit of smooth-talking will make me forget that you still owe me for the three trays of tarts you nicked from my kitchen last week, you are sorely mistaken."
Jungkook lets out a melodic chuckle, the intensity in his gaze giving way to that familiar mischief. "Ah, so the dress didn't buy my forgiveness? I'll have to tell the royal treasurer that the village baker is entirely immune to imperial bribery."
You laugh, but a small, miserable groan follows it as you shift your weight.
"Though I am fully prepared to launch these shoes off the parapet. They are entirely malicious. I am fairly certain they are actively plotting the demise of my toes."
A rich chuckle bubbles up from his chest, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He moves closer, his gaze slowly tracing over you in the soft moonlight, and the compliments simply pour out of him, completely unbidden.
"The shoes are a tragedy, I’ll admit," he murmurs, his voice deep and thick with an adoration he can no longer contain. "But the dress? Y/N, the dress is only beautiful because it’s on you. I spent most of the evening trapped on that dais, surrounded by the highest bloodlines in the realm, and I couldn't see a single one of them. I could only see you. You look stunning. Absolute perfection."
You look down at the fine fabric, a burning flush heating your cheeks as you shake your head, quietly trying to ward off the staggering weight of his praise. "Jungkook, don't say that," you whisper, gesturing weakly to the silk. "It's just an expensive disguise. Strip away the pearls and the lace, and I'm still just—"
"Don't," he interrupts softly, moving even closer until the tips of his leather boots brush yours. He reaches out, his warm, bare fingers gently catching your chin to tilt your face back up to his, refusing to let you hide from him.
"Don't downplay it, and don't look away," he insists with an unwavering sincerity that leaves you entirely breathless. "I know what you look like covered in flour, Y/N, and you are just as breathtaking to me in your stained apron as you are right now. But tonight? You eclipsed every duchess and princess in that room without even trying. The moonlight belongs to you. The stars belong around you. The light belongs to you. And no amount of gold embroidery could ever change the fact that it's you making the dress look like royalty, not the other way around."
He leaves no room for argument, and seeing you shiver slightly as a cutting gust of wind sweeps across the roof, he doesn't hesitate. He slips his heavy charcoal gala jacket off his torso, disregarding royal protocol, and drapes it gently around you. The fabric is still intensely warm from his body, enveloping you in the comforting, rich scent of cedarwood and faint vanilla.
You divert your gaze forward, entirely overwhelmed, and you lean slightly, resting your hands on the stone to look out over the sprawling kingdom below.
From this staggering height, the capital is an absolute masterpiece of shadow, fire, and silver light. Because of the grand anniversary week, the city below isn't sleeping; it is vibrant and alive with celebration, stretching out beneath the midnight sky like a fallen constellation. Hundreds of warm, golden paper lanterns drift lazily from the lower districts, floating up into the night air like stray embers. You hear the distant rumbles of laughter and music as people celebrate. Ribbons of flickering festival torches illuminate the winding stone thoroughfares and crowded public plazas, and the quiet canals catch the reflection of distant, glittering firecrackers, shimmering like veins of liquid mercury. It is breathtakingly beautiful—a glowing, magical world draped in deep blues and festive golds, so peaceful from up here that it feels entirely like a fairytale spun exclusively for the two of you.
A cluster of glowing lanterns drifts particularly close to your side of the roof, casting a warm, amber wash over your face.
"Woah," you breathe softly, a genuine, mesmerised smile breaking across your face as you track their slow ascent. "They’re so pretty..."
"Yeah," Jungkook murmurs, his voice dropping into a quiet rumble.
You keep your gaze fixed to the horizon, naturally assuming he is looking at the glittering city below, caught up in the same spectacular view. But you don't realise that his eyes aren't tracking the floating lanterns or the shimmering canals at all. He is fixed entirely on you. He is watching the way the soft festival light reflects in your eyes, the way your lips part in childlike wonder, tracing every single line of your profile as if you are the only thing in the entire universe worth looking at. To him, the entire kingdom below doesn't hold a candle to the girl sitting on the ledge beside him.
But you remain oblivious to the intensity of his gaze, and as the lanterns float higher, the contrast settles back in, and the heavy reality of the situation hits you like a physical blow.
Directly beneath the citadel, the distant, warm, flickering lanterns of the lower city look small, fragile, and clustered together—it appears equally as vibrant with the festivities, but all you are reminded of is the quiet hum of ordinary life, of flour, sweat, and hard work. Right above them, the vast, sharp gold spires of the castle tower aggressively into the sky, cold and bathed in artificial luxury.
The reality of the situation settles squarely into your chest. The advisor's chilling words echo in your mind. The night is almost over. When the sun rises, the beautiful illusion breaks; you’ll return to the reality of the lower city, while he remains up here, forever cocooned in gold and crown duties. Your shoulders slump, and the light leaves your face as your mood visibly drops.
He notices the shift instantly. The soft, adoring expression on his face fractures, replaced by a deep, heavy frustration. He tracks your gaze from the humble village lanterns back up to the looming castle spires, and a white-hot resentment flares in his eyes. He thinks of his parents coldly judging you from the dais, the constraints of his titles, and how the court treats him like state property. The crown suddenly feels less like a privilege and more like an iron shackle.
His internal restraint snaps, and his monologue turns raw, intense, and deeply desperate.
"It's not... I don't hate the responsibility, Y/N," he confesses. "I want the crown. I want to be king one day, because I want to protect our people. I want to help them, to make this kingdom a safer, better place for every single person living down there in those streets. But I loathe how restrictive it all is."
His fingers find yours, tightening his grip as his chest heaves from the raw truth that spills from his lips. "I loathe these ancient, hollow traditions that treat us like political chess pieces instead of human beings. This palace is a gilded cage built on centuries of rules that don't take a single one of my feelings into consideration—and they certainly don't care about how deeply I care about you."
The intensity radiating off him is overwhelming. He is a prince who loves his realm, but he is also a young man drowning in archaic expectations.
"They expect me to sign away my future for a strategic marriage alliance, to pretend that a name in a court registry matters more than the only person who makes me feel alive," he continues, his gaze burning into yours with a terrifyingly beautiful determination. "I am going to inherit this throne, but I refuse to let their centuries-old traditions dictate my heart. I promise you, Y/N, I will find a way to bridge our worlds. I will change how things are done. I won't let them keep us apart."
Tears blur your vision at his outburst, your heart fracturing at the desperation in his tone. You shake your head, a deep, trembling breath rattling in your chest as you try to pull back from the overwhelming gravity of it all.
"Jungkook, please... I don't belong here," you whisper, your voice cracking under the weight of your own fear. "Your parents... they were watching us. They already look at me like I’m a threat to your bloodline, and they don't even know who I am yet. We are living in a fantasy. You are talking about changing the entire empire for us, but Jungkook... what even is 'us'?"
You look at him, your eyes wide and swimming with confusion. You desperately need him to see the reality of the fragile ground you're standing on.
"We aren't together," you say, the words tasting like ash on your tongue, though you need to force them out anyway. "We aren't dating. We aren't courting. We have never even spoken about what this is. We are just a prince who sneaks through a bakery's back door at midnight, and a common girl currently wearing a dress she could never afford. I don't know what we are doing. I don't know what we are supposed to be, and it terrifies me to face the wrath of the entire high court for something that doesn't even have a name."
The raw truth of your words hangs heavily in the midnight air between you. You are entirely in shock, lost for words and paralysed by the weight of his devotion when your reality is so incredibly fragile.
Seeing your distress and the panicked silence that follows your outburst, a flash of genuine fear crosses his eyes. The stoic prince vanishes, leaving him looking incredibly young and terrified. He panics, thinking he has pushed too hard, that his intensity has completely ruined everything and driven you away.
"Y/N?" he stammers, his voice now small, his throat working hard as he swallows against the lump in his throat. "Gods, I’m sorry... I’ve been entirely selfish, haven't I? I'm sitting here passionately rewriting the future of the kingdom, and I haven't even... I never even properly gave us a name. I left you in the dark because in my head, what we are is already so undeniably clear. Y/N, I love you so much it consumes me."
His hands tremble as they still hold yours, his gaze utterly raw under the starlight.
"I spend my days surrounded by hundreds of people, stuck in those damn council meetings, and all I do—the only thing that gets me through it—is count down the hours until the sun sets. My days are just a blur of waiting for the night, waiting for the exact moment I can finally sneak through your bakery door. I’ve lived my whole life in this golden castle, but it has never felt real. It has never felt full until you. I forgot that I hadn't actually told you that. I've just been pulling you along into my chaos, leaving you to face my parents and the high court entirely alone, terrified, and wondering what we even are. I—I didn't mean to make you feel so unsafe."
His breath hitches, his thumb brushing frantically over the back of your knuckles as his eyes search yours, pleading and desperately earnest.
The words tear at his soul. Jungkook pours his heart out, his chest heaving as the truth spills from his lips. He tells you that you are the only peace he has ever known, the only real thing in a life built on lies, and that he is completely, irrevocably yours, regardless of what the empire demands.
"And if... if this is all too much, if you don't feel the same way about me, Y/N, that's okay. I swear it is. If you just need me to be the boy who sneaks into your kitchen for tea, or just a friend, I will be. I will be whatever you need me to be. I just want to be in your life, in whatever capacity you'll have me, no matter what way you'll take me. I just can't lose you. I—"
You cut him off. Reaching out, your fingers grip the stiff collar of his shirt, and you pull him down to you, shutting him up with a kiss.
It is your very first kiss together, and the impact of it is instantaneous.
Jungkook freezes for a single, breathless second. The Crown Prince, a man so lethal and calculating, is rendered entirely motionless by the simple, staggering touch of your lips against his. His mind short-circuits, the frantic, self-deprecating words dying in his throat as his brain struggles to process your warmth.
And then, the shock breaks, and he melts. Actually melts.
It is as if all the heavy, rigid armour he has carried his entire life just dissolves into nothingness. Every single ounce of defensive tension completely drains from his frame, his shoulders drop as a soft, broken sigh escapes him right against your mouth—a sound of relief, as if he has finally found the one place in the world where he is allowed to simply breathe.
His hands, which had been trembling and uncertain just a moment ago, find a new purpose. His large palms slide securely around your waist, his fingers bunching slightly into the rich fabric of his own oversized gala jacket draped over your shoulders, and he pulls you forward. He brings you flush against his chest, eliminating every single millimetre of distance between you until you can feel the rapid, thumping rhythm of his heart hammering wildly against your own ribs. You move to wrap your arms around his neck, bringing him impossibly closer.
When he kisses you back, all the hesitation evaporates. It is deep, slow, and unfolding with a consuming reverence that leaves you lightheaded. It’s a breathtakingly tender, yet desperately honest touch, his lips moving against yours as if he is trying to commit the exact shape and sweetness of you to memory, silently thanking you for saving him from his own spiralling thoughts. One of his hands slowly travels up from your waist, his long fingers tangling into the hair at the nape of your neck to cradle you closer, deepening the kiss with a quiet, overwhelming tenderness.
It is a beautiful surrender, a mutual, unspoken declaration under the starlight that defies the grand kingdom looming right beneath you. In this single, infinite moment, there are no crowns, no class divides, and no protocols. There is only him, entirely undone and completely yours.
When you finally break apart to breathe, you see a grin break across his face, his white bunny teeth flashing in the moonlight as he lets out a breathless, disbelieving laugh. "Well," he teases, his voice a playful purr as he rests his forehead against yours. "That is certainly one way to silence the future King. I didn't know my kitchen baker was so incredibly aggressive."
"You were rambling," you counter, your cheeks burning a fiery crimson as you try to hide your face in the collar of his oversized jacket. "It was a matter of public safety."
"Oh, is that what it was?" he chuckles, the deep sound vibrating right against your chest. His large hands remain securely locked around your waist, tightening just enough to refuse you even an inch of distance, keeping you anchored right against him.
As the initial shock of the kiss settles, the space between you softens into something incredibly comfortable. The heavy, frantic panic from moments ago evaporates, replaced by a quiet, shared warmth. Jungkook pulls you back just a fraction, his eyes dark and scanning every single inch of your flushed face. The playful smirk fades into something a little more breathless, a little more vulnerable. His thumb slides up to the edge of your jaw, tilting your face up so you're forced to look at him.
"Hey," he murmurs softly, his gaze dropping to your lips before locking back onto your eyes. "So... is this what I think it means? Or are you just going to tell me tomorrow that it was a temporary side effect of the palace wine?"
You look at him, seeing the quiet hope mixed with the lingering traces of his earlier fear. You reach up, your hands sliding out of the heavy sleeves of his coat to rest flat against his chest, feeling the steady, rapid thumping of his heart.
"I think it is," you tell him softly, a gentle, reassuring smile finally breaking through your shyness. You lean your weight into him, letting the cold wind blow past while you stay cocooned in his space. "Let's just exist, Jungkook. Let's just be here, right now, and see what happens."
A profound sense of relief washes over his features, his shoulders relaxing entirely. "Just exist, huh?" he echoes, the playful glint returning to his doe eyes with full force. "I think I can manage that. But I get to decide what existing looks like."
Before you can ask him what he means, he leans down and captures your lips again, pulling you into a deep, slow kiss that leaves your knees feeling like water. It's full of triumphant sweetness that makes your heart soar. When he finally pulls back just enough to let you catch your breath, he doesn't actually let you go.
Instead, a wicked, adoring grin spreads across his face, and he begins to pepper your entire face with rapid, affectionate pecks.
"So, we're just existing?" he mumbles against your skin, dropping a firm kiss right on the centre of your forehead.
"Jungkook—" you gasp, a startled laugh bubbling up as he moves down.
"Just seeing what happens?" he teases, landing a loud, smacking kiss right on the tip of your nose, making you scrunch it up in surprise.
"Stop it, you're ridiculous!" you protest, your face flushing an even deeper, brilliant shade of crimson as you try to squirm out of his grip. But he only chuckles, his strong arms holding you captive as he moves to your cheeks, planting soft, lingering kisses on your left cheek, then your right, intentionally targeting the areas where your blush is the hottest.
He kisses your temples, the corner of your eyes, and the curve of your jaw, his soft hair brushing against your forehead until you are giggling helplessly, your hands weakly batting at his chest. You are blushing so hard your ears feel hot, overwhelmed by his affection. He finally stops, burying his face in the crook of your neck with an immensely pleased hum, his chest rising and falling against yours as he holds you tight under the glittering stars.
For the next few hours, the heavy reality of the world is held entirely at bay. You sit together under the vast expanse of the stars, talking about everything and nothing. About the festival, about a new recipe you’re trying out, about Taehyung’s ability to get under his father’s skin, about Maeve and Alice getting whisked away, and Ken getting an absolute earful from a servant whom he crashed into whilst trying to perform some elaborate abstract dance.
As you talk, you wince slightly, shifting your feet on the cold stone.
He notices immediately, and without a word, he slides down from the ledge, dropping to his knees on the stone tiles right in front of you.
"Jungkook, what are you doing? Get up, you're going to ruin your trousers," you protest, but he ignores you.
"Quiet, baker," he murmurs softly.
With tentative care, his large, warm hands reach out to undo the stiff buckles of your shoes. He gently slides them off your feet, tossing them aside with a look of profound disapproval. He takes your bare, aching feet into his lap, his palms engulfing them. The contrast of his warm, calloused skin against your cold arches makes you let out a long, involuntary sigh of relief.
He begins to massage your feet, his thumbs pressing into the sore muscles with a gentle pressure that eases the ache of the ballroom waltz. He looks up at you through his eyelashes, a soft, immensely pleased smirk touching his lips as he listens to the relaxed, happy sounds you make.
"Better?" he asks quietly.
"If you ever decide to abdicate the throne, you have a solid future as a masseuse," you breathe, leaning your head back against the stone wall.
"I’ll consider it," he smiles.
"You know, I'm starting to think you only added those extra-grip lining so I couldn't sprint for the palace exits the moment you dragged me to the floor."
He lets out a small breathy chuckle, his eyes crinkling at the corners with that familiar, genuine warmth. "A purely tactical design choice, I admit. Can you blame a prince for wanting to ensure his guest of honour stays firmly rooted in the room?"
You respond with your own breathy laugh.
Once he is satisfied that your feet are warm and no longer aching, he climbs back up onto the ledge beside you. He pulls you directly into his lap, wrapping his arms securely around your middle, tucking you into his chest. Covered by his thick charcoal coat and held by the steady, unyielding beat of his heart, you close your eyes. High above the gold and the politics, cocooned in the silence of the rooftop, you simply exist under the stars, letting the rest of the world fade into nothingness.
But of course, Jungkook is Jungkook, and he cuts through the silence with his typical nonsense. "So… does this mean I finally get free beignets? Or am I still paying full price at the back door?"
A breathless laugh escapes your lips, the absurdity of his timing breaking through any remaining shyness. You roll your eyes and lift a hand, playfully slapping his broad chest. "You are unbelievable. The future king of the realm, and you're trying to use our first kiss to barter for free pastries."
"Hey, statecraft is all about negotiation," he chuckles, the deep sound vibrating against your palm. His arms tighten around your middle, pulling you back into the solid warmth of his chest as you both settle down to look at the floating lanterns. He leans his chin down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to the top of your head, the quiet rooftop filling with his contented sighs as the rest of the world fades away.
And there, high above the spires and the village lights, the baker and her prince find their own quiet universe, one where the entire kingdom fades away. One where two different worlds meet perfectly in the middle under the stars, formed through quiet nights full of flour and sugar dust.
Summary: Jungkook, a mere sailor, crosses paths with a mermaid. Forced to work together, they must navigate a world where her kind are the hunted, and his are the hunters. Will they bridge the deadly divide, or will the law of the tides destroy them both?

The morning sun had barely managed to climb over the tree line, casting its long, dusty fingers of amber light through the cracks of the shack's wooden panels. A bitter chill lingers in the corners of the room, but the atmosphere inside is thick with a completely different kind of tension.
Jungkook is hunched over a rotting wooden crate near the window, the stolen leather-bound ledger spread flat before him. His dark hair falls over his eyes in messy, dishevelled waves as he rubs his temples aggressively, a pencil stump clutched between his fingers. He is sifting through the pages. Or, trying to at least.
"It makes absolutely zero sense," he mutters, his voice a gravelly, sleep-deprived rasp. He slams the pencil down onto the parchment, the wood letting out a dry crack. "I’ve mapped every shipping lane from the Royal Capes to the volcanic shoals off Rrodovnik's coast. I know the standard naval grid like the back of my hand. But these coordinates… they’re mathematically impossible. The degrees overlap; they don't follow the standard routes. It’s like whoever wrote this was actively trying to sail a ship straight through solid rock."
The ledger contains pages and pages of manifests, cryptic cyphers, contraband tallies, falsified cargo weights, and countless maps across the Kingdom's sovereign seas—maps which Jungkook is currently viciously stabbing with his pencil, muttering curses over.
You lean against the doorframe, nursing the lingering tightness along your collarbone. You let out a quiet, mocking click of your tongue. "Oh, is the sailor boy's brilliant brain finally springing a leak? C'mon Ace, surely a few scribbles shouldn’t have you looking like you’re trying to solve the secrets of the universe."
Jungkook shoots you a flat, exhausted glare over his shoulder. "If you’re so incredibly brilliant, Angel, why don't you come over here and use your 'superior intellect' to read it? Because right now, all I see is a madman’s diary."
With a dramatic sigh, you saunter over, your borrowed leather boots clattering softly against the dirt-caked floorboards. You lean over his broad shoulder, intentionally invading his personal space just to watch the way his jaw tenses. You cast a lazy glance down at the open page.
The playful, teasing comment you have lined up dies instantly in your throat.
Your breath catches. Your hand instinctively flies to the strap of your satchel, your fingers tightening around the leather. You push closer, nearly brushing your chest against his back as your eyes scan the ink-drawn charts.
"Hey," Jungkook murmurs, his voice softening as he notices the sudden, dramatic shift in your posture. "What is it? What do you see?"
You don't answer him. You can't.
These aren't human trade routes. They aren't roads, and they certainly aren't standard lines of latitude or longitude.
The ink lines don't follow the islands' coastlines. Instead, they loop, coil, and spiral in massive, sweeping arcs across the empty spaces of the map. To a human eye, they look like chaotic, artistic doodles or a cypher designed to confuse thieves. But to you, they are as clear as the sea.
They are tides.
Specifically, they map—what your people call—the Zalindra: the most prominent belt that runs miles beneath the ocean’s surface, carrying freezing, mineral-rich water from the polar abysses into the deep-sea trenches. One that your people have mapped out for aeons, and know like the back of their fins.
For children of the ocean, it was never something to be conquered or partitioned with iron compasses and borders. Your ancestors didn't use the sea; they moved with it, a dance. From the moment you first learned to swim, flicking your tail and moving with the sea, you were taught the art of pressing your chest against the dark currents to let the shifting temperatures dictate the path. You don't fight the tide; you let it cradle you, dissolving your own will into the grand, rhythmic lung of the world. The elders would whisper that the sea was alive, and to move through her waters, you had to become a seamless extension of her anatomy, you had to be accepted by her.
But as you look down at the papers in front of you, your throat constricts as you realise that all your instincts and philosophy have been completely violated. The ink lines didn't just map the Zalindra, they dissected it. Some land-dweller had taken the ancient pathways your kind have felt through the heavy pressure of their gills and the vibration of their scales, and had locked them into sterile, calculated grids. They had reduced something alive into a highway for wooden hulls, fit for efficiency and exploitation.
"This isn't normal ink," you whisper, not meaning to, but you can't help it. Your eyes track a small, carefully drawn symbol of a blooming flower nestled in a deep, isolated valley of the ocean floor. "And this isn't an island. It’s a chimney. A vent." You continue to mutter to yourself, confusion lacing your every word.
Jungkook knit his brows, leaning in closer to follow your finger. "A what? A chimney? Angel, that’s the open ocean. There’s nothing there but three thousand fathoms of empty water."
"It’s not empty," you snap, a sudden, cold wave of panic washing over your chest. He shouldn't have heard that. You shouldn't have said that. But you can't back out now without raising suspicions. You point to a series of jagged, hand-drawn hash marks bordering the lines. "These are the Solyras," you whisper to yourself before correcting yourself to speak louder to him, "plumes of the colder water seeping upwards. If a vessel tries to cross these waters without aligning its hull to the current's temperature, the pressure differential will rip its rudder clean off. But if you sink into the thermal stream… it carries you. It carries you straight through the barrier reefs without ever touching the rocks."
You stare at the ink, your heart hammers a frantic, terrifying rhythm against your ribs.
How?
How could a human—how could Governor Sterling—possibly know this?
Why would he need to?
These drift currents exist miles below the reach of any wooden ship. They are invisible from the surface. They shift, they breathe, they are living rivers of ice and heat that could only be felt by the lines of a tail. It's sacred knowledge passed down through generations of your kind. You don't write it on paper; you feel it in the pressure of your gills, the vibration of your scales.
To map this so precisely, with such clinical accuracy…
"This is impossible," you mutter, your face losing all its colour as you stare at the page. "No one can see the thermal drafts. People don't have senses for it. And you can't survive the pressure down there. To draw this map... someone had to go to the bottom of the trench. Or..."
Your stomach twists violently as a horrifying thought crystallises in your mind.
Or someone from there told them.
"Or what?" Jungkook asks, his voice low, urgent, and sharp. He moves to stand up, his frame instantly towering over you, his dark eyes lock onto your pale, wide-eyed face. He reaches out, his hand hovering near your arm, sensing the raw, unvarnished terror radiating off you. "Angel, what's going on? How do you know what these symbols mean? How do you know about deep-sea currents that aren't on any naval chart?"
You force yourself to swallow the lump of ice in your throat, quickly stepping back to create distance between you, shoving your hands deep into your pockets to hide their slight tremble.
"I... I told you,” You lie, your voice cracking slightly as you force a defensive scowl back onto your lips. "I’m a scavenger. I read old merchant journals. I... I study the sea."
Jungkook’s eyes narrow into slits. The sailor in him knows a lie when he hears one, and the gravity of your reaction was screaming that this was something far bigger than a stolen ledger.
But before he can push you for answers, the reality of the situation settles over the quiet shack. Someone, somehow, had mapped your home. And whoever held the other half of that stone wasn't just sailing the seas—they were navigating the deepest, darkest secrets of your world.
The forest path winding down from the high cliffs is thick with damp pine needles and heavy morning mist, doing little to help your aching feet. You march a full two paces ahead of Jungkook, aggressively ignoring the faint, rhythmic thud of his footsteps behind you. You had both agreed that the quicker you reach Marlow, and the quicker you get to Barnaby, the more time you will have to think through how you're going to pull off a heist. Another heist. Is that all these humans do? Just one grand-scale game of who could steal the most from each other?
But as much as you'd like to focus on the task at hand, you can't help but focus on how warm your face still feels from this morning's... entanglement. Pull yourself together.
"Slow down, Angel," Jungkook’s voice cuts through the quiet woods, low and raspy, carrying that insufferable, amused undertone. "The ledger isn't going to sprout legs and run away. Unlike you, apparently."
"If you kept a decent pace instead of dragging your feet like an anchor, Ace, we’d already be back in the town," you shoot over your shoulder without stopping.
"I'm pacing myself," he retorts smoothly. "It's called energy conservation. You should try it instead of stomping through the brush like a startled deer."
You open your mouth to fire back a biting insult, but the dense treeline suddenly breaks, revealing the looming stone perimeter walls of Marlow's outer gates half a mile below. You both instantly drop into the shadows of a thick briar patch.
Even from this distance, you can see how grim the situation is. The main thoroughfare leading into the city checkpoints is absolutely crawling with Lord Vance's private militia and the Governor's elite guards. Their iron breastplates gleam ruthlessly in the mid-morning sun, and they are systematically stopping every single wagon, checking faces against a piece of parchment.
Jungkook clenches his jaw, his dark eyes instantly shifting into a cold gaze as he scans the fortification. "Dammit. The break-in has them spooked. They’ve locked down the outer ring." He looks down at himself—bare-chested beneath a shredded navy jacket, caked in dried mud, with a massive white linen bandage tied around his forearm. "I look like a walking advertisement for a fugitive Navy sailor. If I step onto that main road, we won't even make it past the toll bridge."
"So what's the plan, Ace?" you mutter, crossing your arms and leaning against a mossy boulder. "Do we sit in the bushes until the ball starts in three days, or do you plan on charming the entire garrison into letting you pass?"
"No," Jungkook murmurs, a sharp, opportunistic smirk suddenly playing on his lips as he points toward a sprawling timber compound nestled just outside the city walls. "We take a detour. The Feather's Estate. It's where the wealthy merchants and upper-class travellers stay before entering the city gates to avoid the morning traffic. If we want to get past those guards, I need to look like a gentleman. And you... Well, you need to look like you belong to one."
"Excuse me?" you hiss, glaring at him.
"We need disguises, Angel," he whispers, grabbing your wrist gently to pull you along as he slips down a hidden, overgrown ravine toward the rear of the coaching inn. "And right now, the wealthy guests of the Feather's are currently eating breakfast, leaving their laundry and travel gear completely unattended."
The rear courtyard smells of wet straw, roasted ham, and expensive horse leather. High wooden fences shield the stable yard from the main road, creating a perfect blind spot. Jungkook presses his back against the timber wall of the stables, his dark eyes darting across the empty courtyard.
A heavy clothesline stretches between the stable and the main kitchen, loaded with fine garments drying in the morning breeze. Among the standard linens hangs a heavy, deep emerald traveller’s cloak lined with dark fur, a fine linen tunic, and a pair of polished leather riding boots sitting on a nearby mounting block. Hanging beside them is a sapphire, blue wool lady's travelling jacket, beautifully structured and embroidered with delicate silver winding along the cuffs, paired with a heavy, pleated riding skirt meant to shield one from the dusty roads. A pair of supple silver-buckled leather boots sits neatly beneath the hem on the damp flagstones.
"Standard infiltration protocol," Jungkook whispers, leaning his head close to yours, his breath warm against your temple. "I'll circle around the front to create a distraction. The moment the stable boy moves to check it, you slip in, snag the disguises, and meet me back in the ravine. Got it?"
"Oh, please," you scoff softly, rolling your eyes at his intense military phrasing. "It's a laundry line, Ace, not a royal armoury. Stop talking like you’re commanding a fleet. And besides, look at your arm. You’re slow, loud, and half-crippled today. Stay here. I'll get the gear."
"Angel, you can barely walk straight on flat dirt," he whispers defensively, his brow furrowing. "Letting you do a stealth extraction with him right there is a liability."
"Watch and learn, Ace," you smirk smoothly.
Without waiting for his counter-argument, you drop low, utilising the survival instincts you perfected whilst navigating the reefs of your home trench. You slip past the wooden rain barrels, your movements silent and fluid as you cut across the muddy yard.
You reach the clothesline effortlessly, your fingers working with rapid efficiency to yank the items from the pins. They are all unbelievably soft; your hands feel blessed to even touch them. You then turn, swiftly scooping up the two pairs of boots.
But as you turn to make your escape, your legs betray you.
Your shoe catches sharply on the iron rim of a discarded feed bucket. The metal lets out a loud, echoing CLANG that shatters the quiet of the courtyard.
"Hey! Who's out there?!" a rough voice shouts from inside the stables. The heavy wooden door swings open, a large stable master stepping out with an iron pitchfork in hand.
Panic freezes your chest. Your human legs lock up completely, your brain scrambling to figure out how to run away on solid dirt when your body is screaming to dive into water that isn't there.
You don't have time to run. Instead, you close your eyes, pressing one hand flat against the damp earth of the courtyard. You draw a deep breath into your chest, releasing a low, sub-audible vibration through your throat.
The frequency typically soothes wild, thrashing sea-beasts. On land, the vibration travels through the wet earth and the stable's wooden foundations.
Within a fraction of a second, the high-strung carriage horses inside the stable react violently. They rear and kick their wooden stalls, letting out panicked, echoing whinnies that shatter the quiet of the yard.
"What the hell—" the stable master barks, his attention violently pulled away from your corner as he spins around, dropping the pitchfork and sprinting back inside the stable to calm the horses now kicking up a storm.
Before you can even process your own success, a strong grip clamps around your upper arm, hauling you backwards into the deep shadows of a hay loft overhang before the man can look back. Jungkook is right there. He has his uninjured arm wrapped securely around your waist, his massive chest pressed flat against your back as he presses you both into the dark recesses of the wooden structure.
"'Watch and learn’, yeah, Angel," he breathes right against the shell of your ear, his voice a low, teasing vibration that makes your pulse spike. His grip around your waist is firm, holding you so close you can feel the rapid, synchronised hammering of your hearts.
"The bucket moved," you hiss back, your face burning with a furious mix of adrenaline and intense fluster as you try to shift away from his solid warmth. "Let go of me, Ace."
"Not until the pitchfork goes away," he murmurs back, a soft, rich chuckle vibrating against your shoulder blade. He keeps you pinned to him for a long, torturous three seconds until the stable master finally grunts and walks toward the kitchen.
The moment the coast is clear, Jungkook releases his grip, and you both scramble back into the safety of the ravine.
Deep within its safety, you drop his share of the stolen gear onto a flat rock. "There. Your elite noble disguise. Now put some clothes on, so I don't have to keep looking at your bruises."
Jungkook lets out an amused huff, sliding out of his torn navy jacket. He pulls the fine white linen tunic over his head, the clean fabric draping beautifully over his broad shoulders and chest. He then sweeps the heavy emerald traveller's cloak over his frame, fastening the silver clasp at his throat. He slides his feet into the polished riding boots, letting out a satisfied breath at the feel of them.
Whilst he adjusts his cloak, you quickly retreat behind a dense thicket of towering ferns to rid yourself of your own salt-crusted trousers. The stolen garments fit beautifully. The jacket tapers perfectly against your waist, whilst the heavy folds of the riding skirt fall gracefully over your newly formed limbs. You slide your feet into the boots, letting out a sigh of relief. Much like Jungkook, you appreciate the clean, smooth interior completely, already forgetting the scratchy grit of your old gear.
Yet, a sudden pang of longing resonates throughout your chest for the deep-sea garments. You can feel one of them in your satchel, fingers itching to feel the planes of it. You miss the freedom of your sculpted pieces, the way the rushing currents would swirl against your skin through the opening of its boned structure, and the shimmer of the pearls and filigree catching the underwater light. This suffocating human wool feels like a beautiful cage in comparison, an artificial shell designed to block out the very element you belong to.
Casting those thoughts away, you finally step back out into the clearing where Jungkook awaits. Your eyes involuntarily scan his transformation. The ragged, half-drowned casualty of war has completely disappeared and standing before you is a man who looks every bit the part of a high-society nobleman. The velvet of the cloak perfectly complements the deep warmth of his skin, and the clean linen highlights the sharp, powerful angles of his jaw.
Jungkook catches you staring again, but as his dark eyes lock onto you, his charming smirk falters, his breath catching in his throat. His gaze traces the rich sapphire fabric outlining your figure, lingering on the elegant set of your shoulders and the graceful sweep of the heavy skirt. A sudden, unreadable intensity washes over his sharp features, his eyes darkening with a quiet, lingering awe.
He then shifts his expression and tilts his head as he adjusts the fur collar of the cloak. The charming smile is back and pulls at his lips.
"Well?" he asks softly, his dark eyes locking onto yours. "Do I pass inspection, Angel? Or are you just completely speechless?"
You sharply snap your eyes away, your heart doing that familiar, rebellious flip against your ribs as you adjust the leather strap of your satchel. "The boots are a bit tight on you, and the cloak makes you look like a pretentious merchant lord who overcharges for spices," you snap back, forcing pure deadpan indifference into your voice. "But it will keep you out of a garrison cell. Let's go."
"Whatever you say, Angel," he smirks richly, stepping up beside you as his long, disguised strides easily match your pace.
With the stolen merchant cloak shielding his identity and his face partially hidden by the deep hood, you easily bypass the outer ring checkpoints, blending seamlessly into the influx of wealthy travellers entering the lower gates of Marlow.
The journey back into the lower parts of Marlow takes the better part of the afternoon. Thanks to the warehouse plunge, your three-day clock has completely reset, meaning your next deadline to submerge yourself in saltwater isn't until the day before the masquerade ball. You have time, that's good, but the city is still dangerous.
You stay strictly to the shadows, navigating the dense paths cautiously until you reach the outer market limits. The streets are crawling with Vance's guards, your ears twitch each time you hear one of them interrogate local merchants.
"Keep your head down," Jungkook instructs, his voice dropping into a quiet hum as he steers you down a narrow, brick-walled alleyway behind a row of tanneries.
You are halfway through the passage when the sharp sound of barking orders echoes from the front exit. A squad of four city militia guards has just turned into the alley, their eyes scanning the path.
"In here," Jungkook commands smoothly.
Before you can protest, he grabs your arm and yanks you into an impossibly narrow, recessed gap between a brick tavern and a rotting wooden carriage. The space is completely suffocating. He shoves you back into the dark corner, stepping in right after you and pressing his solid frame entirely flush against yours to hide you both from the street.
His chest is flattened right against your front, his uninjured arm bracketing your head against the brick wall. You are forced to tilt your chin up just to breathe, your lips mere inches from the sharp line of his throat. The proximity is a violent rerun of the previous night, the intense heat of his body, the scent of salt air and linen, and the rapid, heavy thrum of his heartbeat vibrating directly against your ribs.
The guards' heavy boots scrape against the cobblestones just inches from your hiding spot.
Jungkook looks down at you, his dark eyes wide and intense in the shadows. He takes a slow, careful breath, his gaze dropping briefly to your lips before locking back onto your eyes. Your breath catches in your throat, a sudden, erratic jolt of pure fluster locking up your limbs. You want to snap at him, to tell him to move back, but the sheer gravity of his stare completely paralyses your tongue.
The footsteps finally fade away down the street.
Jungkook lingers for a long, quiet second, his chest rising and falling heavily against yours before he slowly, reluctantly steps back into the open alley, clearing his throat.
"Clear," he mutters, his voice a little rougher than usual. "Let's go."
You both successfully slip through the rear entrance of Barnaby’s lavish tailor shop, the small iron bell muffled by Jungkook’s hand. The short, round tailor is sitting at his desk, but the moment he sees you both slide into the backroom, he leaps to his feet, his waxed moustache twitching with pure, ecstatic delight.
"Darlings! You're alive!" Barnaby squeals, clapping his hands together. "The entire city is talking about the spectacular leap! Lord Vance is practically foaming at the mouth! Tell me... do you have it?"
Without a word, Jungkook reaches into his jacket and slams the thick, leather-bound ledger onto the mahogany desk.
Barnaby gasps, his eyes widening to the size of saucers as he traces the gold crest of Governor Sterling. He snatches it up, flipping through the encrypted shipping manifests with a manic, greedy grin. "Magnificent! Absolutely exquisite! A deal is a deal, my brave little ruffians."
The tailor rounds the counter, gesturing toward two large, heavily secured garment bags resting on a velvet couch, topped with a small velvet box.
"Your noble armour for the midsummer ball," Barnaby purrs. "The finest silks, the most deceptive masks, and right inside that box... two gold-embossed, royal invitations stamped with the Governor's personal seal. You will pass through the palace gates like royalty."
Jungkook takes the gear, a sharp, cold focus returning to his dark eyes. "Thank you, Barnaby. We're square."
He turns to make a swift, dignified exit, but Barnaby blocks the door with a dramatic sweep of his silk-lined sleeves, a wicked, teasing glint in his eyes.
"Oh, 'square,' he says!" Barnaby dramaticises, pressing a plump hand to his chest as if Jungkook had physically wounded him. "With the stiff posture of a man who just swallowed a three-pronged anchor! Look at you, my darling sailor! Smelling of low-tide desperation, handing over stolen, highly confidential government property to a known back-alley smuggler."
"It was a requisition under a critical command directive," Jungkook grits out, his jaw clenching so hard a violent twitch leaps across his bruised cheek. He grips the garment bags more tightly, trying to summon every ounce of his royal-navy dignity.
"Oh, 'requisition'! I simply adore the way you military boys dress up petty burglary in expensive vocabulary," Barnaby squeals, stepping closer and playfully flicking Jungkook’s lapel.
"It’s absolutely delicious. Tell me, did you say a little prayer to the King before you cracked Vance's lock? Did your pristine, rule-abiding royal heart do a frantic, sinful little flutter when you realised you were being a very, very bad boy?"
You can't help it. A low, thoroughly delighted snicker escapes your lips before you can catch it. You cross your arms, leaning back against a mannequin draped in gold brocade, thoroughly enjoying the show. "Oh, please, you should have seen him in the warehouse. His 'pristine royal conscience' was practically hyperventilating. He looked like he wanted to ask the guards for a written receipt before we jumped."
"Hey!" Jungkook hisses, throwing a betrayed, wide-eyed glare in your direction, his ears rapidly flushing a brilliant, telltale shade of crimson. "I was maintaining situational awareness!"
"Of course you were, sweet pea," Barnaby cooes, turning his attention to Jungkook's freshly blood-stained bandage that peeked out of his sleeve.
The tailor lets out a loud, theatrical sigh, shaking his head in mock pity. "Slashed in a filthy gutter, leaping fifty feet into a murky harbour, and reduced to a common cutpurse... all to get an invitation to a party. Oh, I am loving this!"
Jungkook looks like he is actively praying for the floorboards to open up and swallow him whole. His knuckles have turned white where he holds the gear.
"If you're quite finished dismantling my military record," Jungkook mumbled, his voice dropping into a flat, deeply pouted mutter as his bottom lip jutted out in that ridiculously defensive, kicked-puppy way, "we have a schedule to keep."
"Oh, go on then, my little degenerate," Barnaby laughed, waving a hand dismissively as he finally slid out of the doorway, turning back to his stolen prize with a greedy hum. "Go play prince and princess. But do try not to get blood on my silk, darlings. It is such a pain to get out."
By the time you return to the quiet safety of Room 12 at the inn, the sun is actively dipping below the horizon, painting the Marlow sky in deep, bruised shades of gold and purple. The room is still, the two separate twin beds resting against the walls like silent boundaries.
You place the garments on the wooden table, the room's heavy silence settling between you as the final countdown begins.
Jungkook stands by the grimy windowpane, his back to you as he stares out at the distant, glowing lanterns of the Governor's palace rising high on the hill. His fingers twitch, back over where his ring used to rest.
His mind is a mechanical hum of calculations. Two days left, he thinks, his jaw clenching hard in the twilight shadows. Two more until the ball, until he gets inside Sterling's study, finds the coordinates, and finally closes the net around Kallinos. He thinks of his crew, locked away in the dark, and the fierce, unyielding protective drive inside his chest hardens into solid iron. He is closer than he has ever been. Vengeance is within his grasp.
Across the room, you sit on the edge of your mattress, your hands resting flat against your knees. You aren't looking at the palace. You are looking down at your wrists, feeling the subtle, distinct return of that itchy, scratchy tightness beneath your skin.
Two more days left, your mind whispers in a sudden spike of quiet panic. Before you can even think about putting on that expensive silk gown and stepping into the Governor's palace, you have a far more dangerous mission to execute. You must find a way to completely escape Jungkook's hyper-vigilant gaze. You have to slip away into the dark, plunge your entire body back into the freezing salt water of the harbour, and reset your curse, or you risk transforming permanently on dry land, exposing your true nature, and losing everything forever.
You look up, your eyes locking onto the broad silhouette of his back. The clock is ticking for both of you, and the tide is about to turn.

It has always been one of your wishes to ride a bike during a thunderstorm.
Yes, it’s diabolical - you are aware, but being a human being with an innate thirst for unique experiences - you are almost helpless about the wishes that spring in your heart every now and then.
You are helpless about fulfilling them as well. Well, not helpless but reluctant. Just because you have a ton of different wishes added to your not-so-secret bucket list, does not mean you will have to check them off.
They are a source of your dream, your fantasies - the fabrication of a far-off feeling.
However, your wishes are treated very differently and importantly by your best friend - to him those are missions and he has taken the responsibility of achieving them one by one like collecting dragon balls.
And that is exactly what brings you here right now, perched behind him on his bike as he drives through the drizzle on the empty roads of a dormant Seoul.
Your biking gear is sitting tight on your skin. The cold bite of the wet night air can hardly get past the thick later. The helmet is doing its job in protecting your face and head from the rain.
It feels like a dream. No - not only because you are getting to live a fantasy, but also because you are riding behind Jungkook, your best friend, and (ta-da, surprise!) the love of your life.
No, this is not the first time you are riding with him. He has been your reliable ride when you are far too late to trust the public transport and Seoul’s traffic. But there’s something different about riding behind him, wearing a biking gear he specifically customized for you (oh hello????) and racing through the deserted streets of Seoul as the thunder rambles in the sky, as the rain makes its way to pronounce the chill in the night air even more.
There’s something new about your body pressing on Jungkook, him driving the bike at 120 and having no set destination, no set schedule - it’s just you, Jungkook and a wish that is soon to be checked off from the list.
Your heart thrumps in your chest as Jungkook takes a sharp turn, bending the bike in a way that your knee almost touches the asphalt. But there is a gap of a few inches, you know you have nothing to be afraid of.
“Just hold me tight, stick to me and don’t be afraid.” Jungkook has said when you hopped onto the bike, there was that specific smile on his face that is reserved only for the closest people.
You smiled in return and held him tight. So, even though your heart is beating a little too fast right now, you know you are safe.
The drizzle has transformed into a full-fledged rain somewhere in the middle. And it’s making the navigation work a little tough for Jungkook.
He slows the bike down as soon as a bus stop is within sight, in order to stop and wait for the rain to dull a bit.
The gear being waterproof, the rain was only able to batter against the leather of it. Not even a droplet could slip past the armor.
“You okay? All dry?” Jungkook asks upon taking off his helmet.
“Yup!” popping the ‘p’ for an extra effect, you run a hand through your hair. As you expected the ends are soaking wet. Trying to pat them dry, you retrieve your handkerchief from your fanny pack.
“Me too please.” Jungkook chimes in. When you turn your face to look at him, you find him bowing his head towards you like an adorable puppy wanting to be petted.
A fondness spreads across your chest like sunshine after persistent bad weather. Taking your handkerchief to his mop off black hair, you start running the cloth through his head.
Getting playful with each other is the second nature of you two, so after a while of mopping his head seriously, you start patting a little too hard.
“Stop! Stop!” Jungkook holds your hands while giggling. His giggle mimics the sound of a mountain steam skirting through a pile of peddles, ringing against their smooth surface. Your own giggle breaks past the fine press of your lips. Jungkook takes your wrist hostage as a punishment for bothering him earlier.
The pull is immediate and unexpected. Your best friend’s wide open-mouthed smile melts into a more private one as he involuntarily brings you closer to him. His eyes are stuck on yours as if someone has put him in a spell.
There’s something in his gaze, something unusual, something that makes you wonder, makes you a fool. You gulp, neck heating up at a rapid pace. For a moment you wonder if he is going to lean down and do what you have been wanting him to do for so long now. You wonder if he is going to give you a taste of his lips.
A thunder splits the sky in half right at that moment. Jungkook’s face lights up with the mystic purplish light. Another thunder rambles, but this one is inside your own heart.
The wants, desires, and needs mold into one shape - the shape of Jeon Jungkook himself. If he doesn’t kiss you - you are going to that yourself. You can think about the consequences later on.
“You know I love you, right?” He asks, quiet and soft. The spell brakes. Oh… what were you even thinking.
“Of course, I am your best friend after all.” The words crack your heart a little. How you wish he loved you… but not just as his best friend, not just as the girl who grew up with him, not just as the friend who saw him at his worst and his best. How you wish he loved you back, just like you love him with your whole being.
Something flashes in his eyes. It’s an emotion you can’t put a name to. It’s gone even before you can trace and analyze it.
“Yeah, right.” he looks away, stares at the road. You can tell the mood has shifted by an inch. But why, you don’t know.
“Uh- the rain has stopped. Let’s go back?” your best friend asks, looking at you again. His usual bunny smile, bright eyes are back on his pretty face.
“Sure.” you nod along.
As you sit behind him and continue the ride, you feel a sudden burning in your ribcage.
Loving Jungkook is so easy. So easy that once you fell, you didn’t know how to stop. And you don’t want to stop, not now, not ever.
That raises a question though - what will happen if someday you have no other choice but to sacrifice your feelings?
What will happen when this comfortable bubble around you and him bursts into a thousand little droplets and the air carries them far, far away from you?
What will happen when the pact of keeping love life away from this precious friendship is broken and you have to face the fear of seeing Jungkook with someone else?
What will happen then?
You don’t want to know. Not now. Not anytime soon.

The ticking of the library clock doesn't sound like time passing anymore; it sounds like a mechanical countdown, a rhythmic, metal heartbeat mocking the finite number of hours left in his day.
Jungkook doesn't lift his eyes from the sprawling ocean of paper covering the desk. His fingers, ink-stained at the knuckles and stiff from six consecutive hours of drafting appellate briefs, tightly grip a highlighter. The neon yellow ink bleeds across the crisp pages of his Intellectual Property casebook, sharp and precise. He can do this. He has always been able to do this. He is Jeon Jungkook: the fourth-year prodigy, the Vice President of the Student Council, the foundation of the Debate Society, and a legal research assistant for a rather prestigious corporate firm in the city. His track record is an untouchable monument of straight A’s and flawless execution.
But as the first week of May relentlessly bleeds into the second, the boundaries between his carefully compartmentalised lives begin to dangerously blur, fraying at the edges like an old rope under too much tension.
The pressure doesn't hit him all at once in a grand, cinematic wave. There is no sudden, dramatic panic attack, no hyperventilating over his desk, no theatrical breakdown that would give him an excuse to stop. Instead, the stress manifests as a quiet, heavy sediment settling deep into his bones, layer by layer, compressing his spine until every breath feels tightly contained.
It starts with the calendar. His life has become a ruthless, colour-coded grid of absolute zero flexibility, a prison of his own high-achieving making.
08:00 - 10:00: Comprehensive lectures on international copyright law, where his professor deliberately calls on him for the most complex analyses because “Jeon always has the definitive answer.”
10:15 - 12:30: The Student Council chambers. As VP, the structural and financial logistics of the upcoming spring graduation gala fall squarely on his shoulders. He sits through endless, exhausting arguments about budget discrepancies, sign-offs, and administrative red tape, his signature required on twenty different documents before he can even think about leaving the room.
13:00 - 16:00: His role at the firm. It’s supposed to be part-time, but the senior partners treat him like a full-time associate, handing him stacks of archival case files to cross-reference until his vision goes fuzzy and the legal jargon begins to swim behind his eyelids.
16:30 - 19:30: The dead quiet of the library, where he tries to cram three semesters' worth of legal philosophy into his aching brain for his upcoming final exam.
20:00 onward: The dark, endless void of corporate internship portals. He sits in the dim light of his laptop screen, rewriting his cover letters for the twentieth time, tweaking every single sentence to ensure his perfection transfers seamlessly onto a PDF that a recruiter might look at for six seconds.
By the third week of May, the days lose their names entirely. They are no longer Mondays or Thursdays; they are simply measured by the number of empty espresso cups cluttering his nightstand, the mounting pile of laundry in the corner of his bedroom, and the permanent, burning ache right behind his eyes. He is pushing through on sheer willpower. His body is a high-performance machine, driving at maximum speed through a fog, consciously ignoring the check-engine light blinking violently in the back of his mind. He doesn't have the luxury of time to check up on himself. He doesn't ask himself how he’s doing, if his chest feels too tight, or whether his hands are shaking slightly when he reaches for his coffee. If he pauses for even a second to evaluate his own state, the momentum will break. And Jungkook knows that if he lets the momentum break, the entire mountain he’s balancing will collapse on top of him.
But the absolute worst part of the crunch isn't the physical exhaustion, or the burning eyes, or the legal briefs, or the impending doom that is his exams, which determine the trajectory of his life. It’s the silence.
He hasn't seen you in six days. Truly seen you. Almost a week. Not just a passing, frantic glimpse across the bustling quad between classes, or a synchronised, tired nod through the glass of the library corridor, but you. He hasn't held you. He hasn't buried his face in the crook of your neck to let your clean, familiar warmth wash away the sterile smell of old paper and high-voltage library electricity.
During a five-minute transition between a gruelling council disciplinary meeting and a mock trial review session, Jungkook slumps against the cold brick wall of the hallway and pulls out his phone. His lock screen is a candid photo he took of you in his apartment months ago: your dark hair messy from sleep, your eyes soft, crinkled, and laughing as you pulled his oversized navy hoodie over your face to shield yourself from his camera lens.
Looking at it causes a physical, hollow ache to bloom right in the centre of his chest. It’s a cold, vacuum-like emptiness that leaves him feeling entirely winded.
You [10:14]: good luck with the council meeting, Kook! Don't forget to drink water. I'm heading to my prose seminar now, love you <3
Jungkook [12:13]: Thank you, sweetheart. Love you more. I'll try to drop by your dorm tonight after the library closes
Except he didn’t drop by. He couldn’t. A senior professor cornered him about a late-stage dissertation revision at around 20:30, dragging him into an empty office to debate legal precedents until his head throbbed. He had stood outside your dorm building in the dark, staring up at your fourth-floor window. He was too protective of your peace and your own exam schedule; he couldn't bring himself to wake you up. He couldn't let you see him like this: pale, frayed, and running entirely on empty.
He walks back to his apartment alone, feeling a strange, bitter paradox. He is constantly surrounded by people. Professors who heap praise on his endurance, younger council members who look at him with wide, expectant eyes for immediate answers, and his classmates who treat his flawless GPA as an unshakeable inevitability. He is the golden boy in the centre of a crowded room, a pillar of success, yet he has never felt more completely isolated.
By the time he finally drags his heavy feet back to his own block at nearly one in the morning, his body is trembling with fatigue. Without your warmth anchoring him, without the sweet quiet of your presence to silence the chaos of his mind, his life feels like a beautifully constructed, expensive machine operating in a total vacuum.
By the final week before the exams officially commence, the passing of time becomes a blur of physical degradation. The low-grade warning through his muscles has turned into a constant, heavy throb. His fluffy dark hair has grown out significantly past his ears, curling untamed and messy down the back of his neck because a twenty-minute trip to the barber feels like a reckless waste of time he should be spending on his dissertation. His skin is pale under the harsh fluorescent lights of the library, and his breathing is shallow from the stale, recirculated air he’s been inhaling for weeks.
He can handle it. He repeats the mantra to himself like a lifeline as he shuffles a new stack of corporate law printouts into his bag, his movements slow, heavy, and mechanical. He is Jeon Jungkook. He doesn't drop the ball. He doesn't fail. But as he stands in his room, cool, damp air curling around him from the open window of his bedroom, his vision gives a tiny dark flicker at the very edges, a subtle, quiet warning from his body that the machine is rapidly running out of fuel, and the ground beneath his feet is beginning to sway.
The campus air feels suffocatingly thick, buzzing with the high-voltage panic of thousands of students cramming for final exams, but your own second-year Literature syllabus is the furthest thing from your mind. You are supposed to be drowning in Old English prose translations and structural theories, yet every single word on your notebook pages keeps reshaping itself into his name.
You miss him so much it feels like a literal, physical ache right beneath your ribs. It has been over a week since you last felt the secure weight of his arms locking around your waist, days since you heard his voice without the flat, tinny distortion of a phone speaker. You know he is absolutely drowning over in the Law block—swamped with his vice-president duties, firm deadlines, and corporate applications—and a wave of love completely overrides your own exhaustion. Your boy spends every single day trying to hold the sky up for you; it’s your turn to take care of him.
Before heading to his building, you take a deliberate detour to the small, upscale leather boutique just off the campus quad. Your fingers tremble slightly against your wallet as you count out the money you’ve meticulously saved up from your private tutoring sessions over the last few months. You are buying the one thing he has been secretly eyeing for nearly a semester: a heavy, vintage Italian leather folio case, beautifully embossed, meant to organise his complex legal briefs and fountain pens. You still remember the exact look in his dark doe eyes when he pointed it out through the shop window last winter, his face lighting up like a child's before he checked his watch, muttered about an upcoming student council budget crisis, and dragged you away, completely tossing it to the back of his mind. He never spends time or money on himself when he can spend it making you feel like a princess.
Holding the securely wrapped, heavy gift bag tightly against your chest like a shield against the chilly spring rain, you cross the quad, your heart fluttering with a nervous, incredibly eager anticipation. When you reach his apartment block, the butterflies in your stomach go wild. You pull out the silver spare key he had pressed into your palm a year ago with such fierce, ceremonial pride, sliding it into the lock with a quiet, familiar click.
You push the heavy wood door open, expecting the warm, delicious scent of fresh espresso and his woodsy cologne, but you are instantly met with silence.
The apartment is entirely dark. The kitchen counters are empty, and the living room is cast in deep, long shadows. It feels cold, carrying the stagnant weight of absolute burnout. Jungkook’s usual meticulous nature is completely absent. His expensive dress shoes are kicked off haphazardly by the entryway, his necktie is dumped carelessly on the floorboards, and his heavy laptop bag is slumped against the wall like a discarded weight. The only sign of life in the entire place is a single, sharp bar of pale golden light cutting across the dark hallway from his slightly cracked bedroom door.
You slip off your boots and tiptoe down the hall, your heart hammering a frantic rhythm against your ribs. You peer through the crack of the door, and the sight makes your breath instantly catch in your throat.
Jungkook is standing by his chest of drawers, clearly trying to change out of his formal university clothes, but he has completely frozen in place. His white shirt is half-unbuttoned, revealing the tight, stressed muscles of his chest, and his head is hanging incredibly low, his eyes closed as if his neck can no longer support the weight of his thoughts.
Suddenly, his entire frame gives a violent, heavy sway. His eyelids flutter wildly, his face losing every single drop of its usual healthy, golden colour as a wave of dizziness washes over him. His knees visibly buckle beneath his broad build, his hand blindly reaching out to grip the edge of the wooden dresser, his knuckles turning stark white as he begins to tilt dangerously to the side, completely losing his balance.
"Jungkook!"
The panic spikes hot and violent in your chest. You toss the leather gift bag onto his bed, your body moving on instinct as you lunge across the bedroom floor.
You reach him just as his body completely gives way to gravity. Shoving your smaller hands directly under his arms, you wedge your shoulder right under his ribs, bracing your feet against the hardwood to absorb the dead-weight slump of his chest. You strain under his size, your muscles locking as you fiercely hold him upright, steadying his swaying frame against your own, refusing to let him hit the ground.
"Jungkook! Hey, look at me! I've got you, baby, I've got you," you cry out, your voice a sharp, worried whisper breaking the heavy quiet of the room.
He lets out a low gasp, his chest heaving against your shoulder as his heavy eyelids slowly flutter open. His dark doe eyes are blown out, glassy, and entirely unfocused as they wander blankly around the room before finally landing on your face. He blinks once, twice, a heavy daze clouding his features. Slowly, as if he can't quite believe what he's seeing, a faint smile tugs at the corner of his lips. He weakly lifts his large, warm hands to clasp at your waist, leaning his forehead down until it rests directly against yours, his breath hot and uneven against your mouth.
"Y/N...?" he murmurs. His voice is a broken, sandpaper rasp, entirely stripped of its usual deep velvet register. He nuzzles his nose against yours in an adorable, sleepy gesture, his eyelashes brushing your cheek. "Am I... am I dreaming? My brain finally snapped. I'm hallucinating my sweet girl because I missed her too much..."
You let out a sharp, breathless huff, your heart still pounding from the near-miss, but you can't help the small, affectionate smile tugging at your lips. "You're not hallucinating, you absolute idiot. If I hadn't walked through that door, you would have eaten the hardwood floor. Are you okay?"
"Best dream ever," he mumbles shamelessly, completely ignoring your question as he buries his face deeply into the crook of your neck, inhaling your scent. He lets his entire weight slump into you, his long arms wrapping around your back like a giant, clingy koala. "Don't wake me up yet. Let me stay right here. You smell like home."
The initial relief of catching him quickly evaporates, replaced by a cold and deeply protective anger. The sheer neglect of his own body makes your throat tighten. He’s running himself into the ground, and you love him too much to let him do it. You firmly place your palms flat against his broad chest, pushing him back with enough force to make him sit heavily on the edge of the mattress.
You step back, crossing your arms tightly over your chest, your expression turning completely serious as you look down at him with a stern, unyielding authority.
"Jeon Jungkook, look at me right now," you say, your voice dropping into a flat, dead-serious register.
Jungkook blinks up at you from the edge of the bed, his head tilting slightly to the side, completely caught off guard by the sharp edge in your tone. His overgrown, fluffy dark hair falls into his eyes, making him look incredibly young and vulnerable.
"When was the last time you ate a real meal?" you demand, gesturing sharply around his room. "When was the last time you slept for more than three hours? Look at your nightstand, it's a literal graveyard of empty espresso cups and energy drink cans! You are a human being, Jungkook, not a machine, and you almost passed out cold right in front of me! How could you do this to yourself? You have completely stopped checking up on yourself, and it's not okay. You can't just ignore your own health!"
As the scolding leaves your lips, the confident, untouchable golden boy of the university completely shatters right before your eyes.
Jungkook’s eyes go incredibly wide, like a little puppy being harshly scolded for a mistake he didn't realise he was making. His broad shoulders instantly collapse inward, making his large frame look suddenly small and fragile. His bottom lip juts out into a pout, and a gloss of unshed tears suddenly floods his bloodshot eyes, making them shine like glass under the warm bedroom lamp. The sole thought that he has caused you panic—that he has made his favourite person genuinely angry and worried—completely breaks his remaining defences.
"I'm sorry," he whispers. His voice cracks heavily on the vowels, a tiny, pathetic sound that makes your heart instantly fracture into a thousand pieces. A heavy tear escapes his lower lash line, tracing a slow, damp path down his pale cheek. He drops his head, his hands gripping his thighs as his chest heaves with quiet, shallow, shaky breaths. "I'm sorry, Y/N... I didn't mean to make you mad. I just... the council budget was completely falling apart, and the partners at the firm kept adding files to my desk, and the legal philosophy final is on Tuesday..."
He lets out a shaky sob, his shoulders shuddering as he looks up at you through a thick veil of tears, his expression vulnerable. "I just wanted to force myself to finish everything early so I could be completely free for you. I didn't want to carry any stress when I finally got to see you. I wanted to be perfect for you, and now I've ruined it. I've made you upset because I'm a mess and I can't handle it."
Every single ounce of your anger vanishes into thin air, completely dissolved by the raw, melting sweetness of the boy weeping on the edge of his bed.
You instantly drop to your knees on the floor between his thighs, your hands coming up to gently cradle his warm, tear-stained cheeks. Your thumbs move in tender sweeps, wiping away the dampness as you force him to look into your eyes, your own voice turning incredibly soft, thick with a deep, emotional warmth.
"Oh, baby, no," you coo softly, leaning in until your foreheads are touching again, your breath mingling. "Hey, look at me, my love. You haven't ruined anything, Kook. You could never, ever ruin us. I am not mad at you for being stressed."
Jungkook lets out a small, hitching sniffle, his nose turning a faint, adorable shade of pink. His large hands come up to wrap tightly around your wrists, holding your palms firmly against his face as if he’s scared that you’ll pull away if he lets go. He leans his weight into your touch, closing his eyes as a soft, shaky breath escapes his lips.
"I'm upset because I love you, and it scares me to see you push yourself to the point of collapse," you whisper, your fingers sliding up into his fluffy, overgrown dark curls, gently massaging the base of his skull to release the tension. "You don't have to be a superhero all the time, Jungkook. You don't have to be the perfect golden boy for me. You should have reached out to me. Even if I was buried in my own Literature essays, even if we were both busy... we are a team. We are in this together. You are my boyfriend, and you don't have to carry the entire universe on your shoulders by yourself. You're allowed to be tired. You're allowed to lean on me."
Jungkook lets out a raw, emotional little groan, his defences completely collapsing at your words. He lunges forward, sliding right off the edge of the bed and crashing into your space on the floor. He buries his face directly into the soft warmth of your neck, his arms locking around your waist with a crushing grip, pulling your smaller frame so tightly against his chest that you can feel the rapid pounding of his heart against your own ribs.
He holds you so tight it’s almost breathless, his entire body trembling as he seeks your comfort. He begins to press a flurry of tiny, trembling kisses along your jawline, your cheek, and beneath your ear, making you let out a tiny giggle.
"I missed you so much," he mumbles into your skin, his voice thick and completely unravelled. He pulls back just an inch, his glassy doe eyes searching yours, his pout returning in full force. "Don't leave tonight. Please? You have to stay and hold me. I need my Y/N cuddles, or my brain won't work tomorrow."
"I'm not going anywhere, you giant baby," you whisper affectionally, crinkling your nose at him. You lean forward and press a soft, lingering kiss to his pouty lips, then to the tip of his nose, and finally to both of his watery eyes. "I'm staying right here."
Jungkook lets out a small, happy sound against your mouth, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he pulls you up onto the mattress with him. He crawls under the heavy duvet, dragging you right along with him until you are completely enveloped in the blankets. Limbs completely tied together to the point where you can’t make out where his start and yours end.
Your fingers find their way back into his fluffy, long hair, gently moving through the dark strands, tracing the soft curls at the nape of his neck. Jungkook lets out a long, deeply content sigh, completely relaxed for the first time in weeks.
"Look on the bed," you whisper softly, pointing a small finger toward the beautifully wrapped boutique bag sitting on the mattress. "I brought you a little surprise. To celebrate surviving the prep month."
Jungkook lifts his heavy head slightly, blinking at the elegant bag, and then looks at you with wide, sparkling doe eyes. "A present? For me?"
"Yes, for you," you smile warmly, reaching up to gently bop his nose. "Go on, open it. No guessing allowed."
Curiosity completely overriding his fatigue for a brief moment, Jungkook carefully shifts his weight, his long, ink-stained fingers reaching over to pull the boutique bag into his lap. He handles the delicate wrapping with a surprising amount of gentle care, untying the satin ribbon and parting the crisp tissue paper. The moment the paper falls away, the rich, distinct aroma of high-grade, vintage Italian leather fills the small space between you and the duvet. He slides the beautifully embossed folio case out into the warm lamplight.
His breath hitches. He recognises it instantly—the exact case he had stared at through a shop window five months ago, the one he had completely forgotten about the second a law school crisis demanded his attention.
But he barely looks at the object in his hands. He glances at it just long enough for the realisation to click in his tired brain, and then he completely sets it aside, letting the expensive leather slide carelessly onto the mattress. His gaze snaps right back to your face, his bloodshot eyes filling to the very brim with a brand-new waves of love.
"You remembered that?" he whispers, his voice cracking raw on the vowels. "From all the way back in the winter? When I only pointed at it for a second?"
"Of course I did," you murmur softly, your heart swelling as you reach out to caress his cheek. "I remember every single thing you say, Kook."
A heavy tear escapes his eyes again. He lunges forward, sliding his large hands securely around your waist, burying his face in the crook of your neck as his shoulders shudder with a soft, emotional heave.
"I'm going to be better," he mumbles desperately into your skin, his grip tightening around your ribs as if he’s trying to fuse his body with yours. "I promise I'll be better for you, sweetheart. I'll manage my time, I'll remember to eat, I'll be a better boyfriend... I won't let myself run on empty and scare you like this ever again. I'll do better."
You let out a sigh, the absolute melting sweetness of his words making your own eyes prickle with tears. You slide your hands up into his thick, fluffy, overgrown curls, gently cradling the back of his head and rocking him softly against your chest.
"Hey, look at me," you murmur, pulling back just enough to force him to look at you through his thick, wet lashes. You wipe the dampness from his cheeks with the pads of your thumbs, your voice thick with warmth. "You don't have to be better, Kook. You're already the most incredible, loving boyfriend I could ever ask for. You don't have to be a perfect, flawless machine to deserve my love."
You lean forward, pressing a long kiss to his pouty lips, before resting your forehead against his.
"You don't have to change a single thing," you whisper into the quiet space between you. "Just remember that I'm here. Whenever the sky gets too heavy, whenever you feel like you're drowning, just remember to look at me. I'm right here, and you don't ever have to carry it alone."
The relief washes over him like a wave, completely dissolving the final remnants of his academic stress. Jungkook lets out a soft, breathless sound, and a radiant smile finally breaks across his face. He leans up, capturing your lips in a sweet kiss that tastes of rain and adoration, a silent promise sealed between your mouths.
When he finally pulls away, he buries his face right back into the warm crook of your neck, his grip around your waist tightening into a secure, protective hold. "I love you so much, Y/N," he murmurs, his voice dropping into a thick, sleep-slurred register. "So, so much."
"I love you too, Jungkook," you whisper, smiling against his temple. But just as the heavy, profound silence settles over the room, a violent, ungodly rumble echoes from his midsection, a growl so loud it practically vibrates against your own ribs. Jungkook stiffens instantly. He freezes like a statue, his entire broad back locking up as his face stays buried in your neck. For three agonising seconds, he refuses to move, clearly praying that the laws of physics will bend and allow you to believe the sound came from literally anywhere else.
The intense emotional atmosphere shatters in an instant. You burst out laughing, nudging his shoulder, while Jungkook lets out a pathetic, embarrassed whine into your skin. "Was that..." you start, your voice trembling as an unstoppable wave of amusement bubbles up in your throat. "...was that the constitutional framework of the university collapsing, or are you actually just hollow inside?"
"It was a legal objection," Jungkook whines piteously into your collarbone. His ears are already turning a bright shade of crimson that clashes spectacularly with his damp hair. He nuzzles deeper, refusing to show his face. "An involuntary motion filed by my digestive tract. Ignore it. Strike it from the record."
"Motion denied, counsellor," you laugh loudly, your hands coming up to firmly shove his heavy shoulders back. You slide out from beneath his uncoordinated limbs and stand up, pointing an authoritative finger down at him. "The emotional hour is officially suspended. Look at you, you're basically a walking skeleton wrapped in muscles. Let's go eat. We need to get some actual fuel into you before you literally wither away into a tragic legal footnote."
To say that Jungkook is a needy assistant is an insult to needy assistants everywhere. He does not simply walk into the kitchen with you; he attaches himself to your spine like a giant, highly advanced human backpack.
The moment you stand at the small counter, his large, solid frame materialises behind you. His long, muscular arms loop securely around your waist, his hands locking together over your stomach, and he drops his chin into the hollow of your shoulder. Every single time you try to shift your weight to reach the refrigerator or grab a cutting board, you are forced to drag his entire 70-something-kilogram dead-weight frame across the floor, his thick cotton socks sliding uselessly against the floorboards.
"Jungkook, seriously, I am holding a very sharp knife," you giggle-scold, trying to maintain your balance as you reach for a bundle of spring onions. His fluffy, overgrown bangs tickle your jawline, and his warm, slow breaths blow directly against your neck. "You are a literal safety hazard right now. Go sit at the island. Go read a brief. Do anything that doesn't involve being glued to my vertebrae."
"Can't," he mumbles, his voice a thick, low rumble that echoes right through your collarbone. He closes his eyes, tightening his grip around your waist just a fraction, not enough to hurt, but enough to remind you that he could easily lift you off your feet if he wanted to. "The gravity in this kitchen is broken, Y/N. If I let go of my anchor, I am going to float right out the window. For legal and medical reasons, I have to remain securely attached right here to my girlfriend."
"You are a fourth-year law student and the Vice President of the Student Council," you snark, leaning back against his broad chest for a brief second to absorb his dizzying warmth. "Where is the logic, Jeon?"
"Brain has been temporarily replaced by garlic cravings and affection," he whispers, shifting his head to press a slow, wet, and utterly obnoxious kiss directly against the side of your neck, making you shriek and twist away from his mouth. "Cook, please. Your backpack is starving."
You let out a helpless huff, shaking your head as you turn your attention back to the stove. Since he refuses to unclamp his arms, you adapt, working within the tight radius of his embrace.
You set to work on making his absolute, undisputed favourite comfort meal: a heavily upgraded, ungodly spicy, garlic ramen.
With Jungkook's chin permanently glued to your shoulder, you turn on the stove and drizzle a generous amount of sesame oil into the deep stone pot. The moment the oil shimmers, you drop in a generous spoonful of minced garlic and a heavy shake of coarse red chilli flakes. The kitchen instantly explodes with a rich, fragrant aroma—the sharp, savoury sting of toasted garlic and the smoky heat of the pepper curling up in lazy steam clouds. Behind you, Jungkook lets out a low, involuntary whimper of anticipation; his stomach lets out another rumble.
"See? The backpack approves," he murmurs.
You pour in the water, bringing it to a rolling, violent boil before breaking the instant noodle bricks into the pot. As the noodles soften, you stir in the deep, savoury spice packet, dropping the heat down to a steady simmer. But you don't stop there. You reach around his large hands to open the fridge, grabbing cheese and an egg, then move to the chopping board for a handful of freshly chopped spring onions.
Right at the last minute, you grate the cheese onto the noodles, watching it melt instantly into a thick, creamy blanket. You scatter the green onions across the top, and then, with absolute precision, you crack the egg directly in the centre, leaving the bright yellow yolk completely whole and runny, glistening in the centre of the crimson, bubbling broth.
"Holy shit," Jungkook whispers against your ear, his doe eyes wide and completely hypnotised by the pot. "You are a culinary genius. Marry me. Forget the degree, let’s run away and elope."
"Eat your food first, prodigy," you tease, carefully transferring the steaming pot over to a wooden trivet on the living room coffee table.
The moment his arms finally unclamp, Jungkook drops onto the sofa like an oak tree being felled. He doesn't even wait for the broth to stop bubbling; he grabs his chopsticks with a terrifying, single-minded intensity that entirely confirms your suspicion: the golden boy hasn't eaten a real, solid meal in days.
He buries his face in the steam, pulling up long tangle of cheesy, spicy noodles. He eats with a chaotic, completely ungraceful hunger, his mouth turning a vivid shade of red from the intense chilli broth. You sit beside him on the floor, your legs crossed, your chin resting on your palm as you watch him with a mixture of profound affection and mild judgment.
"Slow down, tiger," you laugh softly, reaching over to hand him a tall, sweating glass of ice water. "The noodles aren't going to run away. Neither am I. Take a breath."
He swallows a mouthful, his throat bobbing as he instantly downs half the ice water in one gulp. A drop of spicy broth catches on his lower lip, and a faint, beautifully healthy flush is finally, mercifully returning to his pale cheeks. He looks over at you through his long, thick lashes, his expression one of adoration.
"You don't understand," he says, his raspy velvet voice slightly breathless from the heat. "This is not just ramen. This is a spiritual intervention. My soul is physically re-entering my body with every bite. I can feel my brain cells turning back on."
"Good," you smile, reaching out with a napkin to gently dab the stray drop of broth from his lip. "Because I need those law student brain cells fully functioning for our post-food recovery protocol."
Once the pot is completely scraped clean—to the point where you’re pretty sure he licked the edges when you weren’t looking—you slide back onto the deep, plush couch cushions. You straighten your legs out and gently pat your denim-clad thighs.
"Alright," you murmur softly. "Come here. Lean back."
Jungkook doesn't need to be told twice. He lets out a long, deeply satisfied groan, twisting his large body around and dropping his upper body until his head sinks heavily into your lap. He lies flat on his stomach along the length of the sofa, looking up at you, his long legs dangling off the opposite armrest.
Your hands come up instinctively, your fingertips sinking deep into his thick hair. You begin to give him a slow, deep, and methodical scalp massage, your fingers moving in firm, rhythmic circles. Your thumbs trace the tight knots of stress locked at the very base of his skull, right where his neck meets his broad shoulders from days of staring down at heavy law textbooks. Your fingers then slip under the collar of his shirt, adding the same pressure to his shoulders and his upper back.
Jungkook’s eyes flutter shut almost instantly. A low hum of bliss rumbles from his chest, his entire frame going completely limp against the sofa cushions beneath you. The absolute quiet of his apartment wraps around the two of you like a heavy blanket, insulating you from the frantic campus outside.
"Mmh," he slurs, his raspy voice laced with an intense, sleepy comfort. He reaches up blindly, his large, warm hand searching the air until his long fingers capture one of your wrists, gently drawing your knuckles down to his lips to press a soft, lingering kiss against your skin. "Keep doing that, and I am going to literally merge with this furniture. I'm going to become a permanent structural fixture of this apartment."
"I'll have to pay rent for you then," you murmur softly, a deep, emotional warmth settling into your ribs as you gently card your fingers through his soft, dark curls again. "You've grown it out so much, Kook. It’s getting wild."
"No time," he mumbles, his breath warming your thigh through your jeans. He opens his doe eyes, looking up at you from your lap, his gaze losing its sleepy glaze for a split second, replaced by a sudden seriousness. He squeezes your wrist. "I mean it, Y/N... your presence is holding me so tight right now. These past weeks, I felt like I was completely spinning out of orbit. Like I was running a race in a room with no oxygen. I only kept my legs moving because I knew you'd be waiting at the finish line."
"I am always at the finish line, Jungkook," you say softly, your voice thick as you look down at his beautiful, tired features. "You never, ever have to doubt that. No matter how busy we get, no matter how heavy the syllabus is... I’m always right here."
A large smile slowly breaks across his handsome face, his eyes crinkling at the corners in that sweet, boyish way you love so much. But then, a familiar, entirely shameless glint flashes in the depths of his pupils.
Before you can even register the sudden shift in his energy, Jungkook lifts his upper body out of pure muscle memory. He uses his arms to shift upwards until he is lying entirely, squarely on top of your front, pinning your smaller frame flat against the deep couch cushions.
"Jungkook!" you gasp, a sharp, breathless laugh ripping from your throat as his broad chest completely crushes the air out of your lungs.
He doesn't care in the slightest. He buries his face directly into the soft, warm hollow of your chest, his arms locking around your lower back like unyielding iron bands, trapping your arms and legs completely beneath his heavy, solid weight. He shifts his hips slightly, settling his massive build comfortably over yours, completely making himself at home.
"Kook, you are an absolute giant," you giggle frantically, your pinned hands weakly swatting at the broad, hard expanse of his shoulder blades as his nose nuzzles playfully against your ribs through the fabric of your plain tee. "I cannot breathe! I am being crushed. This is corporate manslaughter."
"I am not suffocating you," he mumbles shamelessly, his voice completely muffled by your clothes, his warm lips brushing directly against your skin through the cotton fabric as he speaks. He shifts his weight again, a cheeky, highly suggestive tone bleeding into his sleepy rasp. "I am simply exercising my human right to a premium, high-quality weighted blanket. It's a medical necessity for my recovery."
"You're heavy!" you shriek, a booming laugh escaping your lips as a furious, vivid pink flush instantly covers your cheeks and neck. You try to wiggle your hips to slide out from under his lower half, but he just lets out a low, rumbling chuckle against your ribs, his grip tightening playfully around your waist, utterly unmovable.
"Besides," he continues cheekily, lifting his head just an inch so his chin rests on your breastbone. He looks up at you with a wide, boxy, and incredibly smug grin, his eyes sparkling with nothing but mischief. "I am just checking your vitals, sweetheart. For health purposes. And wow... your heartbeat is running incredibly fast right now. I think my physical needs are suddenly making a miraculous, late-night recovery. I feel very re-energised down here. The garlic must have stimulated my system."
"Jeon Jungkook! You were literally almost unconscious ten minutes ago!" you shriek, your face burning hot as you swat the back of his neck, though you are laughing so hard your chest is shaking beneath him. "You are absolutely unbelievable!"
"I was dying," he corrects shamelessly, his smile blindingly beautiful and soft in the dim, amber light of the living room. He leans up further, his soft, warm lips capturing yours in a slow, deep, and devastatingly playful kiss that entirely silences your laughter. He tastes faintly of the garlic spice and the fresh ice water, his mouth warm and heavy against yours, turning the chaotic crack of the moment into a deep, dizzying pool of pure adoration.
When he finally pulls back, he doesn't let go. He drops his heavy head right back down into the crook of your neck, his long arms remaining securely locked around your waist, his entire body going completely, entirely limp as the final remnants of his energy vanish.
"Go to sleep, Kook," you whisper affectionately, your hands coming up to softly cradle the back of his head, your fingers gently playing with the dark, fluffy curls at his nape.
"Yes, ma'am," he murmurs sleepily into your skin, his grip relaxing into a warm, protective hold that holds you both to the sofa.
Within seconds, his breathing slows into a deep, heavy, and perfectly rhythmic pattern. His chaotic world completely evaporates into the quiet dark. You continue to softly stroke his fluffy hair, humming a gentle, familiar melody into the warm space of the room, holding your golden boy safe and warm against your chest as he finally drifts off into a deep, dreamless sleep, entirely anchored by your side.
The humanities library is notoriously ancient, smelling of vanilla-scented decaying paper, wood polish, and the quiet despair of arts majors. The desks are long, creaky oak structures with green-shaded banker's lamps that cast dramatic shadows over your copy of Old English Elegies.
And right across from you sits a massive, structural problem.
Jeon Jungkook does not fit in the humanities building. His broad shoulders require him to sit at a slight angle, and his long legs are currently a menace beneath the narrow wooden table. He is supposed to be reading a text on international maritime law, but for the past twenty minutes, he has been conducting a highly coordinated campaign of psychological warfare against your ankles.
First, it’s a gentle, absentminded nudge of his socked foot against your shin. You ignore it, shifting your legs to the left.
Then, his foot follows you. A slow, rhythmic tapping of his big toe against the side of your sneaker.
You glare at him over the top of your literature anthology. Jungkook doesn't look up. His long, fluffy curls are falling into his eyes, his reading glasses perched precariously on the bridge of his nose, his expression the picture of absolute, pristine academic focus. If anyone else looked at him, they would think he was solving a global legal crisis.
You reach under the table and sharply kick his shin.
Thump.
Jungkook’s eyes snap up behind his lenses. His brow twitches. A slow, incredibly dangerous boxy grin spreads across his lips. He slowly lowers his highlighter, places his palms flat on his heavy textbook, and leans forward across the narrow desk, his voice a barely audible whisper that cuts through the room's dead silence.
"Assaulting a future officer of the court," he murmurs cheekily, his doe eyes sparkling with mischief. "That’s a class-A misdemeanour, sweetheart. I could sue you for emotional damages."
"You're invading my sovereign territory under this desk, counsellor," you whisper back sharply, leaning in so the librarian won't launch a textbook at your head. "Keep your giant limbs on your side of the oak, or I will write a scathing satirical poem about your law brief."
"Oh, a threat of literary defamation? Bold."
Suddenly, you feel a warm, heavy sensation under the table. Before you can react, Jungkook utilises his athletic reflexes to hook his ankles behind your calves, entirely trapping your legs between his. He exerts just enough pressure to drag your feet completely across the divider line, pinning your sneakers securely against his own.
"There," he murmurs smoothly, leaning back in his creaking wooden chair, a look of smug, absolute triumph on his face as he picks his highlighter back up. "Sovereign territory officially annexed. Go back to your poetry, Y/N. Your feet belong to the Law faculty now."
You try to yank your legs back, but his hold is like a set of vice grips. You let out a breathless, defeated huff, your face burning hot with a mixture of amusement and fluster, forced to finish your translations while completely pinned to his lower half for the next three hours.
It is nearly two in the morning on a Thursday, and the exam stress has officially caused Jungkook’s brilliant, high-achieving brain to temporarily detach from reality.
He is suffering from a manic, late-night burst of hyper-focus before his Legal Ethics final. He has dragged your small desk chair into the centre of your cramped dorm room, unzipped his hoodie so it hangs off one shoulder, and is currently pacing the floorboards with a frantic, theatrical intensity that would make a Shakespearean actor weep.
"Members of the jury," Jungkook announces dramatically, gesturing with a plastic spoon toward your double bed.
You are sitting cross-legged on the mattress, a mug of chamomile tea in your hands, watching the performance with wide, utterly bewildered eyes. Lined up neatly along your pillows is the "jury" he has meticulously constructed: a large plush frog, a disgruntled-looking teddy bear, and a stuffed pink octopus.
"I ask you to look at the evidence!" Jungkook proclaims, his voice booming with a rich, commanding eloquence that is entirely too grand for a nine-by-nine university room. He stops pacing, pointing the spoon directly at the teddy bear. "The prosecution claims that my client intentionally withheld information regarding the corporate merger. But I ask you—how can a man bound by the absolute sanctity of attorney-client privilege break his oath? Look at his face! Is that the face of a corporate fraudster?!"
The teddy bear stares back, blank and fuzzy.
"Jungkook," you interrupt softly, hiding your face behind your tea mug as your shoulders shake with laughter. "The defence rests. The bear looks completely unconvinced by your rhetoric. I think he’s leaning toward a guilty verdict."
Jungkook stops dead in his tracks. He drops his arm, his dramatic stance instantly collapsing into a soft, exaggeratedly offended pout. He stalks over to the edge of your bed, dropping heavily to his knees on the floorboards right in front of you. He rests his chin flat against your knee, looking up at you through his long, overgrown bangs, his big, wide doe eyes shining with fatigue and silliness.
"The jury is biased against me," he whines softly, his bottom lip jutting out into that adorable, familiar pout. He reaches up, his large hand wrapping around your wrist, gently pulling your hand down so he can nuzzle his cheek into your warm palm. "Sweetheart, tell the bear to stop judging me. My closing statement was flawless. I used three different Latin phrases."
"It was a magnificent performance, baby," you coo affectionally, your fingers instantly sinking into his curls, gently scratching his scalp. "The frog was visibly moved. I think he’s ready to acquit."
Jungkook lets out a low, vibrating hum of sleepy satisfaction under your touch, closing his eyes as he completely relaxes against your leg. "Good. If I fail this ethics exam, I’m becoming a professional stuffed-animal defence lawyer. You can be my legal secretary."
"I have a Literature degree to finish, Jeon. I am not typing up briefs for a plush octopus."
"Heresy," he mumbles against your jeans, his arms wrapping lazily around your thighs as he prepares to use your floor as a secondary bed. "I’ll pay you in kisses. High conversion rate. Very lucrative."
The Law School library is not just a building; it is a sacred, terrifying cathedral of absolute, suffocating silence. It is governed by ancient, hawk-eyed librarians who look like they personally witnessed the drafting of the Magna Carta, and the unwritten rule here is simple: making a sound is a first-class ticket to immediate social exile. The air is heavy with the scent of leather bindings, old paper, and the high-voltage anxiety of a hundred students staring down a future of bar exams.
You sit in a semi-private, study carrel near the back, your fingers hovering over your laptop keyboard as you desperately try to map out a structural timeline for your medieval spec-fic module. You are entirely focused, your brow furrowed into a tight line of academic panic.
And right across from you sits a professional menace.
Jeon Jungkook is supposed to be studying a massive, dry, leather-bound casebook on Constitutional Law Amendments. He looks the part of the pristine law prodigy: his white button-down shirt is perfectly crisp, a pair of elegant, silver-rimmed reading glasses is perched on the high bridge of his nose, and his long, curls are tucked neatly behind his ears. To anyone else, he is a picture of untouchable, elite concentration.
But you know better. You can feel the heat of his intense gaze burning right through the glass divider. He hasn't read a single line on his page in twenty minutes. Instead, he is uncapping his expensive fountain pen—the one you just bought him—with a slow, deliberate click of his tongue.
A tiny, neon-pink square enters your peripheral vision.
His long, elegant hand, veins prominent against his golden skin, slides a sticky note directly over the top corner of your laptop screen. You blink, your fingers freezing over the keys, and look down. Written in his sharp, slanted handwriting is a single sentence:
Your jawline looks really pretty when you're judging nineteenth-century literature. It’s making it physically impossible for me to focus on the Supreme Court. Let me kiss it.
You choke on your own saliva, a soft, involuntary squeak escaping your throat. You instantly clap a hand over your mouth, your heart hammering a frantic, erratic rhythm against your ribs as you scan the immediate area, terrified that a librarian heard you. Your ears are suddenly burning, a furious, vivid pink flush creeping rapidly up your neck.
You glare at him across the divider. Jungkook doesn't even blink. He is staring intensely at page 402, his jaw tight, his expression entirely stoic and professional. The only giveaway is the faint, nearly imperceptible twitch at the corner of his plush lips.
Snatching a black gel pen, you furiously scribble a reply on the bottom of the square and slide it back across the smooth wood.
We are in the library, Kook. People are trying to pass finals. Stop being a menace and read your amendments before I ban you from my dorm room.
Not even thirty seconds pass before another pink square slides effortlessly into your space, positioned right over your cursor so you can't ignore it.
Amendments are boring. You are not. And your ears are currently turning the exact shade of this sticky note, sweetheart. It’s adorable. Look at me.
You bite your lower lip, determined to ignore him. You stare fixedly at your document, typing out a completely nonsensical sentence just to keep your hands moving. Your face is so hot you’re convinced steam is about to rise from your cheeks.
Scratch, scratch, scratch. The sound of his pen is a quiet torture in the silent room.
A third note slides across. This time, it hits your knuckles.
Stop biting your lip like that. That’s my job. If you do it one more time, I am going to stand up, walk around this divider, and kiss you right in front of that librarian who looks like she's about to drop dead any second now. Five seconds. One... two...
Your head snaps up. You glare at him over the top of the divider, your eyes wide with a mixture of frantic fluster and disbelief. Jungkook is already waiting for you. He slowly lowers his casebook, letting it rest on the desk, and slides his reading glasses down to the very tip of his nose. He looks at you over the silver frames, his doe eyes entirely dark, heavy, and melting with a dangerous, suggestive warmth that completely robs the oxygen from your lungs. He slowly, deliberately raises one eyebrow, a tiny, devastatingly smug smile playing on his mouth. He is completely shameless. He knows exactly what he is doing to you.
You crumble the sticky note into a tight ball and toss it directly at his nose. It bounces harmlessly off his cheek and lands on his open textbook. Jungkook lets out a low, barely audible vibration through his broad chest, his shoulders shaking with a quiet, delighted laugh.
But he isn't done.
Before you can pull your gaze away and retreat back into your essay, you feel a sudden shift beneath the table. Jungkook shifts his long legs, his knees brushing against yours, and then his large, warm hand slides directly under the table.
He doesn't reach for your hand. Instead, his heavy, burning palm settles squarely over your bare knee, his long fingers splaying out across your skin.
You let out a sharp, breathless gasp, your entire spine going completely rigid against the wooden chair. Your eyes widen to the size of saucers. You frantically look under the desk, then back up at him, your heart pounding so hard you are certain he can hear it.
Jungkook’s face is the picture of absolute innocence. He has picked his book back up, his eyes scanning the legal text as if he were a model citizen. But under the table, his hand is alive. His thumb begins to move in slow, mesmerising circles against the soft skin of your thigh, his palm radiating a heat that turns your entire brain into absolute mush.
You frantically grab a fresh green sticky note, your hand trembling so violently the ink smears as you write:
TAKE YOUR HAND OFF MY LEG JEON JUNGKOOK EVERYONE CAN SEE US.
You shove it under his nose. He doesn't even look down. He just reaches out with his left hand, grabs his pen, and writes a reply on the exact same note without even breaking his reading rhythm, sliding it back to you with a casual flick of his wrist.
No one can see under the table, sweetheart. The frosted glass protects us. And your skin is so incredibly soft today. Let me keep it there, or I promise you my hand is going to start wandering much, much higher.
You read the words and completely lose the ability to speak. A deep, dizzying wave of flutters crashes over you, your stomach doing a violent, acrobatic flip. You look at him, your lips parted in a silent, defeated wheeze, completely at the mercy of his sweet, terrifying obsession. You are a literature major, a girl who handles thousands of words a day, but right now, under the heavy weight of his touch and his gaze, you are completely illiterate.
Realising he has completely broken your defences, Jungkook finally relents, but only slightly. He slides his hand down from your thigh, his fingers trailing a burning path along your calf before he securely captures your trembling hand under the desk.
He draws your hand over to his side of the divider, keeping it hidden beneath the dark wooden framework. He lifts your hand to his mouth, his eyes locking onto yours over the silver rims of his glasses, and he presses a lingering kiss directly into the centre of your palm. Then against your inner wrist, his lips warm and soft against your racing pulse.
He squeezes your fingers tightly, locking his hand with yours and pinning you to his side, before finally returning to his law amendments with a thoroughly satisfied, radiant smile.
Across the wide aisle of the library, you catch a brief glimpse of Serena sitting at a computer terminal, looking over at your carrel with a tight, envious line to her mouth. But as you look back at your laptop screen, your hand completely enveloped in Jungkook's warm, unyielding grip under the table, the last remnants of the universe vanish. Your face is still burning hot, and your heart is still racing from his teasing, but you have never felt more unshakeable. You lean back in your chair, a soft, breathless smile taking over your lips, completely content to let the golden boy of the university hold you captive in the dark quiet of the library.
It is three in the morning on the day before his final presentation and your final essay submission. The apartment is entirely dark save for a single floor lamp casting a warm, buttery circle of amber light over the living room rug.
You are both too exhausted to sit at the desks anymore, so you have moved the pillows and duvets completely onto the floorboards. You are sitting back-to-back in the centre of the rug, your spine pressed firmly against his broad, solid back, your bodies acting as a mutual, balancing support system in the dead of night.
The silence is thick, deep, and peaceful. The only sounds are the soft rustle of him turning a page and the rhythmic clicking of your laptop keys.
"Hey," Jungkook’s raspy voice breaks the quiet, his deep velvet tone vibrating directly through your spine where your backs meet.
"Mmh?" you murmur.
"Lean back completely," he instructs softly.
You comply, relaxing your muscles and letting your full weight drop back against him. Jungkook shifts slightly, absorbing your smaller frame against his powerful back, completely holding you up without a single complaint. He tilts his head back, his soft, overgrown curls brushing against the top of your head.
"Are you tired, sweetheart?" he whispers.
"Exhausted," you admit honestly, your eyes heavy. "But we're almost there, Kook. Just two more days."
"Yeah," he murmurs, a soft, incredibly tender smile audible in his voice. He reaches back blindly, his large hand finding your thigh, gently patting it through the heavy duvet. "Just two more days. And then I’m locking you in this apartment and sleeping for forty-eight hours straight with my head on your chest."
You let out a soft, emotional little chuckle, your heart swelling. The academic world outside these walls doesn't matter. The metrics, the grades, the pressure, all of it is just noise. Inside this small circle of limelight, you are just two tired students holding each other up in the dark, surviving as an unbreakable unit.
"It's a deal, Jeon," you whisper into the quiet room, leaning deeper into his warmth as the clock ticks forward toward the dawn.
The digital display board in the grand, high-ceilinged lobby of the Law Faculty is surrounded by a dense, suffocating crowd of anxious students, but Jungkook doesn't even need to fight his way to the front to read the text. The sudden, collective shift in the room’s atmosphere—the quiet, respectful murmurs of his name drifting through the sea of sharp blazers—tells him everything he needs to know before his eyes even scan the screen.
Rank 1: Jeon Jungkook.
Untouchable. Unmovable. Holding his absolute first-place position exactly like he has every single semester of his university life.
The moment he turns away from the board, the praise from his professors is immediate and resounding. Professor Kang and Professor Davison catch him near the marble stairwell, offering firm, heavy pats on his broad shoulders and speaking in proud, elevated tones about his future in the corporate legal sector. Jungkook bows at the perfect, respectful angle, a polite, practised smile gracing his handsome features. He plays the part of the flawless campus prodigy with an effortless grace, but beneath his calm exterior, his eyes keep darting toward the heavy glass exit doors. He is entirely checked out. The grades are just a formality; his heart has already sprinted across the quad to a completely different faculty block.
"Jeon." An administrative assistant cuts through the crowd of congratulatory classmates, tapping him on the arm politely. "The Principal has requested your presence in his office before you leave campus."
Jungkook suppresses a sigh, nodding smoothly. "Of course. Thank you."
The executive suite of the university administration block is a grand, carpeted sanctuary smelling of expensive mahogany, leather bindings, and old wealth. The Principal, a notoriously stern, highly respected scholar who rarely interacts with undergraduates, is standing behind his desk, but the moment Jungkook steps through the door, the older man’s face breaks into a wide, genuinely affectionate smile.
"Jeon, come in. Sit down," the Principal says, walking forward to offer a firm, lingering handshake.
Jungkook sits, his posture perfectly straight, his new leather folio case resting securely on his lap.
"I wanted to congratulate you personally," the Principal says, leaning back against his desk, looking at Jungkook with immense professional pride. "You have completed your Bachelors with flying colours, topping the entire senior tier. But more than that, I want to thank you. For the last four years, you have carried the absolute best reputation of this institution wherever you went—whether on the debate stage, in the theatre showcase, or in your leadership on the student council. You are the definition of an excellent student, Jeon. A true credit to our university."
"Thank you, sir," Jungkook says softly, a humble, genuine flush rising to his cheeks. "I just did what I could."
The Principal nods, his expression turning slightly serious as he drops his hands into his pockets, offering a piece of heavy, grounding elder advice. "And your best is remarkable. But remember, the bachelor’s degree was just the foundation. The Master's track next term is a completely different beast. The metrics are harsher, the independent research is brutal, and the competition changes entirely. Don't let your past success make you complacent, Jeon. Be prepared to work even harder and continue to do this university proud. I expect nothing less than absolute brilliance from you in graduate school."
"I won't let you down, sir. I'll be ready," Jungkook promises, bowing respectfully before finally being dismissed.
The exact moment the heavy double doors of the administration block click shut behind him, Jungkook lets out a long, liberating breath that pushes the final remnants of legal terminology out of his lungs. He sheds the rigid, suffocating skin of the campus "golden boy" with every single stride he takes across the concrete.
He doesn't care about the Master's track right now. He doesn't care about the Principal's expectations. He walks briskly past the law buildings, past the science labs, heading straight for the older, ivy-covered stone arches of the humanities quad; the section of the campus where he usually finds himself, the only place where his world actually makes sense.
He spots you instantly.
You are sitting on the edge of the old stone fountain; a white folder of results clutched tightly in your lap. There is absolutely no shadow in your posture today, no hiding beneath his oversized hoodie, no lingering trace of the quiet, toxic rot Serena had tried to poison your mind with months ago. The warm afternoon sunlight catches the strands of your hair, and the moment your eyes lock onto his tall frame across the grass, your entire face lights up with the widest, most radiant, and utterly confident grin he has ever seen on you.
"Jungkook!"
You bolt from the stone bench, sprinting across the lawn with an energy that makes his heart do a violent, ecstatic flip inside his ribs.
Jungkook doesn't even hesitate. He drops his expensive leather folio case directly onto the grass, stepping forward and opening his broad arms just wide enough to catch the sudden, beautiful hurricane of your body hitting his chest. You launch yourself at him, your legs practically leaving the ground as you latch onto him like a lifeline, your arms throwing themselves securely around his neck.
Jungkook lets out a loud, booming, and completely uninhibited laugh—a sound of glee that rings across the quiet courtyard. He hooks his arms under your thighs and around your lower back, lifting your frame entirely off the concrete and spinning you around in a wild, dizzying circle under the sun, completely unbothered by the dozens of literature students watching them from the benches.
"I've got you," he breathes, his voice a deep, joyful velvet as he finally stops spinning, though he refuses to set you down completely. He keeps you pressed flush against his chest, his large hands anchoring your waist to his heartbeat. "Look at that smile. Tell me everything, sweetheart."
You pull your head back just an inch, your hands firmly gripping the collar of his shirt, your eyes sparkling with a fierce, beautiful pride. "I did it!" you tell him, your voice bursting with a newfound, unshakeable confidence. "I passed every single module with upper-class marks, Kook! My Beowulf analysis got an A+! I did really, really well this term!" You lean up on your tiptoes, your grin turning playfully competitive as you tap his chest. "I’m warning you right now. Next term, I’m topping the entire Literature group. I’m going to get first place and make you so proud of me."
Jungkook’s breath hitches sharply in his throat. The absolute, devastating depth of his love for you hits him like a tidal wave, thick, heavy, and hot behind his eyelids. He doesn't care about his own perfect GPA or the Principal's praise. He reaches up, his large, warm hands cradling your jawline with fierce, protective tenderness, and leans down to capture your lips in a firm, profoundly sweet kiss. It is a kiss full of relief, adoration, and absolute devotion, completely consuming your mouth until you are breathless beneath him.
When he finally pulls away just a millimetre, he keeps his thumbs smoothing over your flushing cheekbones, his doe eyes boring into yours with an intense, raw seriousness that completely silences the ambient noise of the campus around you.
"Y/N, look at me," he whispers, his voice thick with an unyielding emotion. "Listen to me very carefully. You already make me prouder than any grade or first-place ranking ever could. I am completely, utterly proud of you in this exact second, just for being who you are."
He smiles, his eyes crinkling at the corners in that sweetly obsessed way that belongs only to you. "You drafted that essay beautifully because your mind is amazing. But all you ever need to do is your absolute best for you, because you love the literature. Don't you ever dare compare your marks to anyone or try to catch up to anyone else. You don't need to work yourself to death just to earn my pride, sweetheart. Whether you top the class or get the lowest mark on the board... I am always, always going to be the proudest man on this campus to stand next to you. I love you for your soul, not a piece of paper."
The sweetness of his speech hangs beautifully in the warm air between you. You blink up at him through your long lashes, your lips parted softly as his words sink deep into your chest, completely validating every ounce of effort you put into the term.
But then, a tiny, familiar, and highly mischievous spark suddenly ignites in your eyes. A playful, entirely sarcastic smirk tugs at the corner of your lips, and you reach up, your fingers gently twisting one of his long, fluffy dark curls around your finger.
"Oh, really?" you tease softly, your voice dripping with sweet irony. "No need to work myself to death? Wow. That's a very beautiful, very grounding piece of advice, counsellor... kind of like the exact advice someone else needed a few months ago when they literally almost ate the hardwood floor of their bedroom from exhaustion."
Jungkook freezes.
His eyes go impossibly wide, his jaw dropping open slightly as he gets caught dead right in his own hypocrisy. The smooth, untouchable prodigy completely vanishes, replaced by a flustered, red-eared boy. A rich, vivid blush immediately colours his cheeks and neck, and he lets out a low, deeply embarrassed chuckle.
"That... that was different," he mumbles weakly, his confidence entirely evaporating as he drops his heavy forehead down to rest directly against your shoulder with a defeated groan, hiding his face from your laughing gaze. His long arms tighten around your lower back, pulling your waist impossibly closer against him to cover his embarrassment. "That was a temporary glitch in my operating system. It doesn't count."
"It completely counts, Jeon!" you shriek, a bright laugh ripping from your throat as you wrap your arms tightly around his neck, your fingers softly weaving themselves through his hair. "You're a hypocrite!"
"I'm a recovered hypocrite," he mumbles sleepily into your skin, a vibrant, happy smile spreading across his face against your neck as your laughter echoes warmly through the humanities quad. He holds you tight, his heart beating a steady, peaceful rhythm against yours under the summer sun, entirely, beautifully content to let his little literature major run circles around him for the rest of his life.
↬ he is still your peace, you are still his anchor, and together, in the soft, unbroken quiet of the dark, you will learn how to begin again 𓏲 ๋࣭ ࣪˖✮⋆˙

The bathroom is entirely too bright. The harsh, clinical glare of the lights bounces off the porcelain, piercing your eyes. You sit frozen on the very edge of the stone tub; you can feel the cold of it even through your sweatpants. You stare at the small plastic stick resting in your hands as if it were a bomb just waiting to go off, a piece of live ammunition that has quietly dismantled your entire thought process in the span of a mere three minutes.
It stares back, taunting.
Two pink lines. Definite. Unmistakable.
A wave crashes over you from behind, knocking the air clean out of your chest. Your breath catches sharply in your throat, trapping a half-formed gasp. The walls of the bathroom feel as though they are moving, pressing inward to trap you here. Your heart slams against your ribs, generating an erratic rhythm that vibrates throughout your body making your ears ring with an all-too-familiar, high-pitched buzz.
Pregnant.
The word feels like acid in the back of your mouth. It echoes, heavy and terrifying.
The room begins to tilt and your chest tightens as if a band is being squeezed around your lungs. You try to inhale, desperate for oxygen, but your throat feels entirely closed. You can only draw in microscopic, ragged sips of air. A cold sweat breaks out across the back of your neck and the palms of your hands, making your skin feel frozen yet burning all at once
Your mind spirals instantly to Yoongi.
He isn't a regular husband. He doesn't have a standard 9-to-5 in an office. No Min Yoongi is a global icon, a musical titan whose name is carried on the lips of millions across the world. For three years of marriage, you have quietly walked a tightrope alongside him, navigating the exhausting reality of his world. You have lived through the brutal world tours which leave him breathless, gruelling comeback preparations that reduce his sleep to a handful of hours on a studio couch, 16-hour days locked inside the dark walls of the Genius Lab, and the constant, suffocating paranoia of media scrutiny.
You love him, so much that it frankly terrifies you. But throughout the years of building a life in the shadows, the two of you have never explicitly talked about kids, or more importantly, when. There was never time. You were always just trying to survive the current schedule, always trying to protect the life you had built together.
His schedule is already breaking him. He’s already running on empty, pouring his blood, sweat, and tears into a microphone. Now there's a massive stadium tour approaching. Rehearsals start in days. How can he handle a baby? What if he thinks this will ruin everything that he sacrificed his youth to build? What if he looks at you and gets mad? What if he looks at this child and just feels trapped by a duty he never asked for?
The hyperventilation catches up to you completely. Your vision begins to tunnel, the edges turning a fuzzy, dangerous grey. Black dots dance across your sight and your leg bounces uncontrollably before weakness invades your limbs, and you drop your head heavily between your knees, sliding down the side of the tub till you hit the floor. Your hands are shaking so hard that you can barely grip your own hair to hold yourself together. You feel like you are drowning in dry air, spinning out of control.
Stop. You command yourself.
The word rises from somewhere deep within your gut, sharp and sudden, slicing through the thick panic. You squeeze your eyes shut, forcing your consciousness away from the future and bringing it back to the present.
Breathe. Come on, you can do it, breathe. In for four, hold for four, out for four.
You draw in a ragged, trembling breath, forcing your stubborn lungs to expand against the phantom weight on your chest. You count the seconds in your head, focusing entirely on the numbers. You pull your hands from your hair and press your palms flat against the tiles of the floor, letting the frigid temperature shock your system, grounding your racing thoughts.
Look at everything you’ve handled. Look at who you are.
You haven't spent the last three years being fragile. You have kept a high-profile marriage entirely under the radar of millions of invasive eyes, survived the loneliness of six-month world tours without a single complaint, holding down the fort in an empty apartment whilst he was across the globe. You have smiled through the constant internet rumours, handled the weight of his lifestyle, and remained his safe space through resilience. You are not weak. You can handle two pink lines on a piece of plastic. You are absolutely not going to break down over a blessing, even if it feels like the most terrifying thing you’ve ever faced.
Slowly, mercifully, the dark spots recede from your vision. The dizzy tilt of the bathroom rights itself. Your breathing evens out into a steady, controlled rhythm, though your heart still thumps heavily.
You lift your head and look back at the counter. The fear doesn't magically disappear, but the paralysing grip of the panic attack is gone. Your strength is back, even if it's small.
Wiping a stray tear from your cheek with the back of your hand, you reach out and pick up the test. It feels heavier now, loaded with the weight of an uncertain future. Terrified of throwing a wrench into the gears of Yoongi's current schedule, you swallow the lump in your throat. You stand up, slip quietly out of the bathroom, and walk into the dim stillness of your shared bedroom.
Holding your breath, you open your closet door, reach into the very back of the bottom drawer, and slide the test deep beneath a thick stack of sweaters. You close the drawer, leaving the life-altering secret buried in the dark, the echo of your racing heart is the only sound breaking the silence of the room.
It is a Tuesday evening, and by some miracle, Yoongi drags himself through the front door before midnight. He doesn't look like an international superstar right now; he looks like your exhausted husband. He sheds his heavy black trench coat, leaving him in an oversized, faded band tee, his hair dishevelled and sticking out in wild tufts from wearing a beanie all day.
He walks straight into the kitchen where you are standing by the stove. Without saying a word, he steps right into your space, burying his face in the crook of your neck. His arms wrap securely around your waist, pulling you against him. He lets out a long sigh, his entire body going limp against yours as he drinks in your familiar scent.
"God, I missed you," Yoongi rasps, his voice rough from spending the last twelve hours vocal-directing in the studio. He presses a soft, lingering kiss to the sensitive skin just below your ear, making you shiver. "My brain was turning to mush. All I could think about during the last meeting was coming home to my wife."
Your heart swells, a sweet, aching warmth blooming in your chest. You turn around in his embrace, framing his pale face with your hands. He has dark circles under his eyes, but the moment he looks at you, his expression softens into tenderness. You guide him to the kitchen island and place a steaming bowl of homemade stew in front of him.
He eats quietly, a contented hum escaping him as you sit on the stool right next to him, gently running your fingers through his soft hair.
Now. Just tell him, you think. You can do it. Just say the words.
You swallow hard, your knuckles turning white as you grip your glass of water. "Yoongi?"
"Hmm?" He looks up, pausing with his spoon halfway to his mouth. His heavy-lidded eyes are entirely open, attentive, and filled with a soft focus.
"I... um..." Your throat suddenly closes up. Your eyes drop to the faint strain in his neck, the slight tremor in his hand from fatigue. Tomorrow, his eight-hour choreography rehearsals start for the upcoming tour. The words freeze on your tongue. The fear of disrupting this hard-earned peace, of adding a life-altering variable to his bursting schedule, completely paralyses you. "...I forgot to get some of that ginger tea. I'll get it tomorrow."
Yoongi lets out a low chuckle, the corners of his eyes crinkling beautifully. He reaches to take your hand and rubs his thumb over your knuckles. "Don't stress about it, sweetheart. I'll get some on the way back tomorrow. Just sit with me."
Soon. You think. I'll tell him soon.
The next time you try, it's on a Thursday night, dragging well past two in the morning. The steady drumming of rain against the living room windows is the only sound breaking the silence of the apartment. You sit on the floor by the coffee table, a heating pad on your lap and a fresh cup of tea resting nearby. You are waiting. You are always waiting these days, but tonight, the weight of the plastic stick in your closet feels like a weight pulling you downs.
The electronic lock on the front door finally clicks, a weary chime that signals his return.
Yoongi steps into the entryway, and your heart aches at the sight of him. He doesn’t just look tired; he looks entirely hollowed out. His black hair is damp with sweat, clinging to his forehead beneath a crumpled bucket hat. He is wearing an oversized, fleece-lined hoodie, his shoulders slumped forward in a posture of defeat. Today was a ten-hour run-through of the new album's choreographies: brutal, high-impact routines designed for stadium energy, and it has clearly taken every single ounce of life out of him.
He kicks off his shoes, his joints practically popping in the quiet apartment. When he looks up and sees you sitting there under the dim light of the lamp, a faint look of relief washes over his face.
"Babe," he rasps, his voice a low, gravelly sound that tells you he’s been shouting over loudspeakers and backing tracks all day. "You shouldn't have stayed up."
"I wanted to," you say softly, your voice steady despite the familiar fluttering of anxiety in your stomach. You stand up. Okay. You can do this. It's only Yoongi. He loves you more than anything.
You don't let your own fear show. Instead, you walk over to him, take his heavy leather duffel bag from his hand, and set it aside.
Yoongi doesn't even have the energy to walk to the bedroom. He collapses straight onto the living room rug, propping his back against the base of the sofa and letting his head drop back with a groan. His eyes close instantly. You sit down cross-legged right beside him, opening a fresh jar of anti-inflammatory muscle rub. The sharp scent of menthol fills the air as you scoop some onto your palms, rubbing your hands together to warm it before pressing them gently against the tense muscles of his neck and shoulders.
Yoongi lets out a deep, guttural sigh, his entire body shuddering beneath your touch. "God, your hands are a miracle," he mumbles, his head tilting back into your palms, completely surrendering his weight to you. "My knees are completely shot today. The performance director made us run the bridge seven times in a row. Shit felt like my lungs were about to explode."
You massage the tight knots in his shoulders, your thumbs working with a rhythmic, heavy pressure. Every line of his face speaks of the crushing burden he carries as a producer and an idol. He is bearing the expectations of millions of fans, the financial pressure of a massive label, and his own perfectionism.
And right now, tucked beneath your skin, a tiny secret is growing.
Just say it, you tell yourself, your jaw tightening as you stare at the dark crown of his hair. You can’t keep hiding this from your husband. He has a right to know. Just open your mouth and tell him he’s going to be a father.
You swallow the thick lump in your throat. "Yoongi?"
"Yeah, babe?" he murmurs, his eyes still closed, a relaxed smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
"I need to tell you something. Something important." The words leave your lips, quiet but clear.
Yoongi hums, turning his head to look at you from his spot against the couch. His eyes are heavy with an exhaustion that goes bone-deep. Before he can ask what it is, he lets out a dry, humourless laugh, rubbing a hand over his face.
"Man, I hope it's good news," Yoongi sighs, his voice dropping into a register that makes your blood run cold. "Because if anything else gets added to my plate right now, I think my head might actually split open. The label just added three more broadcast appearances to the comeback week, and the producers in LA are fucking up the final master for track four. If this comeback isn't perfect, Y/N... if anything goes wrong now, with the stakes this high for the tour... I don't know what I'd do. I'm completely at my limit."
The words hit you like a physical blow.
The confession dies instantly in your throat, freezing into ice. You look at the deep circles bruising the skin under his eyes. You look at the slight tremor in his fingers from tiredness. The terrifying vision of his world collapsing under the weight of an unplanned, life-altering pregnancy flashes before your eyes. If you tell him now, he won't sleep. He will look at you with stress. He will worry about your safety, about the fans finding out, about how to be a father whilst living out of a suitcase on a global stadium tour. He is at his limit, and you refuse to be the thing that breaks him.
Your strength reasserts itself, but this time, it forces you to lock the secret away even deeper, shielding him from the burden. You swallow the truth, forcing a soft, reassuring smile onto your lips, though your chest aches with a heavy, hollow pain.
"It is good news," you lie smoothly, your voice a gentle balm as you lean down and press a soft, lingering kiss to his warm forehead. You slide your hands down to cup his cheeks, your thumbs smoothing over his cheekbones. "I was just going to say that the agency called earlier. They approved your request for a four-day break right after the promotion cycle ends. You’re going to get to rest."
Yoongi’s eyes widen slightly, a genuine laugh escaping him. The relief that washes over his face is so palpable, that it makes your heart break a little bit more. He reaches up, wrapping his hands over yours, pulling your palms to his lips to press a deep kiss into your skin.
"Thank God," Yoongi breathes, closing his eyes again as he pulls you down until you are lying against his chest. He wraps his arms securely around your waist, burying his face in your hair. "I don't know what I'd do without you, Y/N. You're the only peace I have in this chaotic life."
You hold him back as you stare blankly at the window, the rain pouring down outside. You press your cheek against his racing heart, keeping the silent tears from falling, carrying the heavy weight of your shared future entirely on your own shoulders for just a little longer.
Three weeks pass. Three weeks of carrying this secret entirely on your own. Morning sickness has kicked in, and you have become a master of hiding the dry heaving, but you cannot hide the emotional distance. You are quiet, anxious, and jumpy.
And Yoongi has absolutely noticed.
It is a Friday night. Yoongi walks into the living room, completely ignoring his heavy studio bag, leaving it slumped by the door. He walks straight over to the couch where you are curled up into a tiny ball, staring blankly at the TV screen.
Without a word, he sits down next to you, scooping you up effortlessly and pulling you directly onto his lap. You stiffen slightly, your instincts screaming to hide, but Yoongi doesn't let go. He wraps his large, warm hands around your arms, rubbing them gently up and down, before shifting to cup your cheek. His eyes swim with worry.
"Hey," he murmurs, his voice incredibly soft, laced with a raw, genuine fear that hits you right in the chest. "Look at me, babe. Please."
You force your eyes up to meet his. He looks so understanding, so entirely devoted to you after three years of marriage, that it makes your chest tighten past the breaking point.
"You’ve been somewhere else for weeks," Yoongi whispers, his thumb gently wiping away a tear that you didn't even realise had fallen down your cheek. He leans forward, resting his forehead firmly against yours, his breath warm against your lips. "Talk to me. Did I do something? Are you unhappy? Whatever it is, we can fix it. Just talk to me."
Hearing the slight crack in his voice breaks the final dam holding you back. You let out a choked sob, burying your face in the crook of his neck as you break down crying completely. Yoongi immediately holds you tighter, his arms locking around you like armour, rocking you back and forth on his lap. He whispers a litany of "I've got you," and "It's okay, sweetheart, I'm here," into your hair, his hand gently patting your back.
Still crying, you grab his wrist, your fingers digging into his skin. You cannot say the words. Your voice is completely gone.
You guide him out of the living room and into the bedroom. Yoongi follows you silently, his brow furrowed in deep concern. You walk over to your closet, reach into the very back of the sweater drawer, and pull out the small box where you have hidden the positive tests.
With shaky hands, you turn around and hold the box out to him.
Yoongi looks at the box, then up at your tear-stained face, confusion lacing his own. Slowly, he takes it from your hands and pops the lid open.
The moment his eyes land on the multiple positive test results, they go wide. His intense demeanour completely shatters. The silence stretches for three seconds, five seconds, ten seconds.
Seeing his utter shock, your worst fears flare up. Your inner strength deserts you, and you immediately shrink back into yourself, crossing your arms over your chest and pulling your shoulders inward, trying to make yourself look as small as possible to brace for a negative reaction as silent tears continue to roll down your cheeks.
Yoongi looks up from the box and catches your movement. His expression instantly softens into confusion, followed quickly by deep heartbreak. "Baby? Why are you holding yourself like that? Are—are you scared of me?" He lets out in a whisper. He drops the box and moves to hold onto your arms, rubbing them up and down whilst he cranes his head to be almost level with yours.
"I... I wasn't sure if you wanted them yet," you sob out, the words tumbling out of you in a panicked, incoherent rush. "With your career, and the comeback, and the tour... we never talked about it, and your schedule is already breaking you, and I thought it was too early and you'd get mad or stressed—"
"Oh, my God, no. Y/N, look at me."
Yoongi doesn't even let you finish the sentence. He lunges forward, catching you in a tight hug. You can feel the frantic thumps of his heart beating in sync with yours. He rests one arm around you, the other on the back of your head. Both hands move in soothing motions.
"No, no, no, babe, how could you think that?" Yoongi gasps, his own voice cracking as thick tears finally spill over his eyelashes, wetting your shoulder. He pulls back just enough to frame your face with his hands, his thumbs frantically wiping your cheeks as he rains loving kisses all over your forehead, your eyelids, your nose, and finally your lips. "Fuck the tour, fuck the comeback. None of that matters compared to this. I could never, ever be mad at you for this. Never."
"You're not disappointed?" you whisper, sniffing loudly, looking at him through blurry vision.
"Disappointed?!" Yoongi lets out a breathless laugh, a gummy smile breaking across his face. His eyes shine with happiness. "I'm ecstatic. I'm so fucking happy, babe. I love you so much. I've wanted this, I've wanted a family with you for so long, I was just always afraid to ask because of my lifestyle."
To prove his words, Yoongi slowly sinks onto his knees right there on the bedroom floor. He wraps his arms completely around your waist, burying his face directly against your still-flat stomach. He presses a warm, lingering kiss right through the fabric of your shirt, his shoulders shaking slightly as he cries tears of absolute relief and joy.
"Hi, baby," Yoongi whispers softly against your skin, his large hands gently splaying across your stomach as if protecting the most fragile thing in the universe. He looks up at you, his face a beautiful, tear-stained mess, his smile completely taking over his features. "We're going to be parents, babe. I'm right here. I'm going to take care of both of you, I promise."
The sun hasn’t even broken through the curtains when the familiar, violent wave of nausea hits you. You bolt from the bed, throwing yourself onto the cold bathroom tile just in time to empty your stomach into the toilet.
Within seconds, the heavy, comforting warmth of Yoongi’s presence is right behind you. He doesn't care that he only got two hours of sleep after a late-night recording session. His hands immediately gather your hair, pulling it gently away from your face, whilst his other hand rubs soothing, heavy circles into your back.
"I’ve got you, sweetheart," he murmurs, his voice thick with sleep but laced with absolute devotion.
When the dry heaving finally stops, he flushes the toilet for you and gently wipes your mouth and forehead with a damp, cool washcloth. He carefully lifts you up, carrying you back to bed as if you are made of glass. He tucks you under the duvet, slips a piece of ginger candy into your mouth, and presses a lingering kiss to your temple. "Just breathe, princess. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
You sit anxiously on the examination table, the thin sanitary paper crinkling loudly beneath you with every nervous shift of your weight. The dim, clinical room smells faintly of rubbing alcohol, a sterile environment that makes you feel slightly on edge. The OB/GYN squeezes a generous dollop of gel onto your lower stomach. It's shockingly cold, making you gasp softly and tense up as it slicks across your skin.
Yoongi is sitting in the plastic chair squeezed right next to the table, and the moment you flinch from the cold, his hand clamps around yours.
He is wearing his usual low-profile uniform—a black bucket hat pulled low to shield his face, a dark, oversized hoodie, and a black medical mask pulled down just beneath his chin. For three years of marriage, you’ve watched this man command stadium stages with absolute stoicism, projecting an aura of effortless cool that leaves millions breathless. But right now, stripped of the stage lights, he looks like a terrified, nervous kid. His jaw is set tight, and he is squeezing your fingers so hard that your knuckles are turning white and your hand is going practically numb.
"Just breathe, babe," he whispers, though it sounds more like a reminder for himself than for you. You internally chuckle at the thought, but it grounds you.
The OB/GYN smiles reassuringly, dimming the overhead lights before grabbing the transducer. The static hum of the machine fills the quiet room as she presses the plastic probe into the cold gel, gliding it slowly across your abdomen. You find yourself holding your breath, your eyes locking onto the monitor. The gravity of this moment makes your throat tighten with a sudden, overwhelming vulnerability.
The black-and-white screen flickers, shifting through static and grey shadows until the doctor stops her hand, angling the probe slightly. A tiny, blurry pixel appears right in the centre of the screen, swimming in the darkness.
"There it is," the doctor says, her voice incredibly gentle. "There’s your baby. And let’s listen to the heartbeat."
She presses a button on the console. A second of static cuts through the air, and then, suddenly, a rapid, thunderous thump-thump-thump-thump completely fills the room.
It is the loudest, most beautiful sound you have ever heard in your life. It echoes off the sterile walls, fast and fierce, sounding exactly like a galloping horse racing through a storm. It is a cadence of pure, undeniable life.
You look over at Yoongi, and your heart melts completely, shattering under the weight of his love. His mouth is slightly open, his breath hitching audibly in his throat. His sharp eyes go glassy, capturing the monitor's ambient glow before a heavy wave of tears instantly wells up and spills over his pale cheeks. He doesn't even bother to wipe them away. The man who spends his entire life meticulously crafting masterpieces in a studio is completely undone by a single, erratic audio frequency.
As if in slow motion, Yoongi lifts your trembling hand to his face. He presses his lips firmly against your knuckles, kissing them repeatedly, his hot tears soaking into your skin. His eyes never leave the screen, staring at that tiny blinking pixel as if it were the centre of the entire universe.
"That's ours," he whispers, a broken, breathless laugh escaping his lips as a fresh sob catches in his throat. He squeezes your hand, leaning closer until his forehead rests against the edge of your mattress. "Look at our baby, Y/N. God, just look at it. That's our baby."
It is three in the morning, and you are staring wide awake at the ceiling, your stomach aggressively demanding ramen and vanilla ice cream. Together.
You glance at Yoongi, who is snoring softly beside you. He had a gruelling 10-hour dance practice today, and his joints are aching. Knowing how much pressure he is under, you swallow your craving and sigh softly as you try to roll over and go back to sleep.
But the shift in the mattress wakes him. Yoongi blinks through the darkness, immediately reaching for you. "Babe? What’s wrong? Do you feel sick?"
"No, no, I'm okay," you whisper quickly, feeling guilty. "Go back to sleep."
He sits up, rubbing his eyes, his voice a deep rumble. "You're hungry, aren't you? What do you want?"
"Yoongi, it's fine. It's just a weird craving, and it's way too late, and you're tired from practice, it's fine—"
"Hey." Yoongi cuts you off, his tone shifting into something fiercely protective. He cups your face, his eyes dead serious even in the dark. "Don't you dare hide it from me. I don't care about being tired. I will drive across Seoul right now, I'll find a 24-hour convenience store, and I'll do whatever it takes. You're carrying my child, for God's sake, Y/N. Let me take care of you."
The intensity of his love makes your chest ache in the best way. You softly tell him what you want, and within ten minutes, he has a heavy hoodie on, kissing your forehead as he grabs his car keys with a tired but deeply contented grin.
The living room of your apartment is completely buried under a wave of familiar chaos. Takeout containers litter the coffee table, laughter bounces off the walls, and the ambient noise is loud enough to wake the neighbours. After a brutal two-week stretch of non-stop dance rehearsals, the guys have finally been granted a single night off, and they chose to spend it piling into your home.
You stand by the kitchen island, laughing as Jin and Jungkook loudly bicker over who gets the last piece of fried chicken. You are in your element, playing the role of the unflinching hostess to seven grown men who act like teenagers the second they step through your door. Even after all these years, this loud, chaotic brotherhood never fails to warm your chest.
Suddenly, a pair of warm, pale hands slides around your waist from behind.
Yoongi presses his chest against your back, his chin resting securely on your shoulder. He doesn’t care that five seconds ago he was sitting on the couch arguing with Namjoon about track arrangements; his internal compass always pulls him back to you. His hands splay flat against your lower stomach, his fingers sifting slightly through the fabric of your oversized sweater. He has been hyper-protective since you told him, a quiet, fierce guard dog who refuses to let you out of his sight.
"Are you tired?" he whispers in his gravelly, low voice, his breath fanning across your neck. "Your ankles sore? I can make them leave."
You let out a soft chuckle, covering his hands with yours. "Yoongi, they just got here. I’m fine. A few hours of hosting your brothers isn't going to break me."
He hums, but he doesn't pull his hands away from your belly. He catches your eye in the reflection of the microwave door, a soft, conspiratorial glint in his feline eyes. "Let's tell them. Before Hoseok tries to pour me a shot of whiskey."
You take a deep breath, your heart fluttering with a sudden, beautiful rush of excitement. You nod.
Yoongi lets go of your waist, takes your hand firmly in his, and guides you into the centre of the living room. He clears his throat, a sharp, authoritative sound that instantly cuts through the noise. The guys blink, looking up from their various spots on the couch and the floor.
"Listen up," Yoongi says, his voice steady, though you can feel the slight, nervous tremor in his palm as he squeezes your fingers. He doesn't waste time with a grand speech. He just looks down at you, a blinding smile breaking across his pale face, and states it cleanly. "Y/N is pregnant. We’re having a baby."
The silence that hits the room is absolute, heavy, and instantaneous.
For two entire seconds, it feels like the collective brains of seven global superstars completely short-circuit. Namjoon freezes mid-sip, a splash of cola dripping off his bottom lip. Jungkook’s chopsticks hover an inch from his open mouth, a piece of pickled radish slipping out of his grip and dropping back onto the plate with a dull thud. Jin’s windshield-wiper laugh cuts off mid-syllable, his eyes widening to the size of saucers. Nobody breathes. Nobody moves. They just stare at the two of you as if you’ve suddenly started speaking an alien language.
Then, the apartment completely explodes.
"What?!" Jin shrieks first, slamming his hands onto his knees as he bolts upright. "Yah! Min Yoongi! Are you serious? You? A father? You can barely wake up before noon on a weekend, and you're making a whole human?!"
"I wake up perfectly fine, shut up," Yoongi fires back defensively, though his gummy smile only grows wider.
Hoseok lets out a loud, high-pitched scream of joy, throwing his hands in the air and lunging off the sofa. He sprints across the room, completely bypassing Yoongi to wrap you in a massive, careful hug, buzzing with excitement. "Oh my God! A baby! I’m going to be an uncle! A real uncle! We have to celebrate! Wait, no alcohol for Y/N—someone get her water!"
"Hold on, hold on!" Jungkook shouts, his doe eyes practically bulging out of his skull. He drops his chopsticks entirely, jumping on the spot like an eager puppy. "A mini-Min Yoongi? Or a mini-Y/N? Oh my God, I’m definitely the favourite uncle. I'm going to teach them how to lift weights before they can even walk. I can carry the baby and the stroller at the same time!"
"A baby needs love and gentle care, not a gym partner, you muscle-head!" Jimin interjects loudly, shoving Jungkook out of the way. His sweet eye-smile is fully on display, though his eyes are already blinking back sudden, emotional tears. He gently takes your hands, his voice dropping into a soft, choked-up register. "Y/N, congratulations. Truly. Please tell me I'm the primary babysitter. Don't let Jungkook near the nursery, he'll turn the crib into a squat rack."
"Excuse me, I clearly have the most sophisticated taste here," Taehyung chimes in, his boxy smile radiant as his fingers already fly across his phone screen. "I’m buying the baby a tiny leather jacket. No, wait, a tiny designer trench coat. They’re going to be the most stylish kid in Seoul, I swear. We're going to art galleries together."
"Hey! Back off, I'm the oldest, I get to choose the first outfit!" Jin yells over the din, gesturing wildly. He walks over, his eyes incredibly soft despite his loud voice, and pats his younger brother's head with deep affection. "Look at you, Min Yoongi. A father. I still remember when you were a teenager sleeping on a studio floor, and now you're going to be changing diapers. I'm getting old. Are you gonna rap the lullabies in a minor key?"
"I am a brilliant lyricist, my lullabies will be masterpieces," Yoongi retorts, his chest puffing out playfully.
Namjoon stands up, a massive, dimpled smile breaking across his face. He looks incredibly proud as he walks over to clap Yoongi heavily on the shoulder. "Wow. Three years of marriage and now this. A whole new chapter. I'm just worried about you analysing the structural integrity of the baby wipes before you use them."
"I'll have you know I've already researched the best organic brands," Yoongi mutters, though his voice is thick with a rising wave of emotion.
You stand in the centre of the room, completely surrounded by an overwhelming fortress of love, loud bickering, and chaotic love. The boys are already arguing over who gets to hold the baby first, who will be the most responsible caretaker, and whether the baby will inherit Yoongi's fierce scowl or your bright energy. The initial fear you carried for weeks evaporates completely under the warmth of their reactions. These aren't just global superstars; this is your family. This is the village that is going to help raise your child.
Yoongi pulls you back tightly against his side, his arm wrapping securely around your shoulders. He looks at his members, his eyes swimming with love as he presses a sweet kiss right to the crown of your head.
"You guys can argue all you want," Yoongi warns playfully, his voice cracking slightly with the weight of his happiness. "But yeah. We're having a baby."
It's a rare, blessed night off during your second month of pregnancy. Yoongi had strictly told his management that he was completely unavailable after 6:00 PM, refusing to compromise.
He drives you out past the neon lights of Seoul, up into the quiet, secluded hills where the city noise fades into nothing but the sound of crickets and the wind through the trees. He parks the car in a hidden clearing, opening the trunk to pull out a massive, plush duvet and a mountain of thick pillows.
Now, the two of you are lying side by side on the blanket under a vast, dark sky blanketed with brilliant, shimmering stars. The air is cool, but Yoongi has you tucked securely against his side, his arm acting as your pillow while a heavy blanket covers you both. His fingers are tracing slow, mindless patterns over your stomach, where a tiny, barely-there swell is beginning to form.
"Look at that one," Yoongi whispers into the darkness, pointing up at a particularly bright star. "That’s going to be our little one's star."
You smile, leaning your head heavily against his shoulder. "Do you think it's a boy or a girl?"
"I don't care, as long as they have your laugh," he murmurs softly, turning his head to press a warm kiss to your temple. He sighs, a deeply contented sound that warms your skin. "When the tour is over, I'm taking a long hiatus, Y/N. I don't care what the label says. I want to be there for every single doctor's appointment, every weird midnight craving. I want to build the crib myself. I want to watch them crawl across our living room floor. Say their first words. Take their first steps…"
He shifts, rolling onto his side so he can look down at you in the starlight. His eyes are incredibly soft, filled with a peaceful, dreamy look you rarely see when he's bogged down by work.
"In a few years, we'll buy that house in the countryside we always talk about," Yoongi says, his voice a low, comforting melody in the quiet night. "The one with the big garden. We'll build a swing set. I'll teach them how to play the piano. We're going to give them such a beautiful life, babe. Just you, me, and our baby."
You reach up, tangling your fingers in his hair, pulling him down into a soft, slow kiss that tastes of sweet promises and a future that feels so beautifully close you can almost touch it.
The peace of that starry night is violently ripped away just three days later.
It happens on a suffocatingly hot Thursday afternoon. You are sitting on the living room couch when a sudden, violently sharp cramp rips through your lower abdomen, so intense it takes your breath away and forces a gasp from your lips. Shaking, a cold dread instantly pooling in your chest, you rush to the bathroom. The moment you look down, your entire world grinds to a halt.
Bright, heavy, unmistakable red blood.
Panic, cold and completely suffocating, seizes your throat. You call Yoongi, your hands trembling so violently you almost drop the phone. The moment he answers, your voice breaks into choked, terrified sobs. "Yoongi... Yoongi, help me, please. Something is wrong. There's—there's blood."
On the other end of the line, you hear a massive commotion. Yoongi is in the middle of a high-stakes, final title-track choreography review with the entire performance team and senior label executives. But the moment your broken cry hits his ears, the idol persona vanishes. You hear his chair screech violently against the floor, his voice slicing through the studio with a sharp, terrifying, thunderous authority: "Stop the music. Clear the room. I'm leaving. Now." Before anyone can even utter a word of protest, the line goes dead.
The world is a terrifying blur of shrill siren wails and flashing red lights. You are lying on the narrow stretcher in the back of the ambulance, the vehicle swaying violently as it navigates the chaotic Seoul traffic at breakneck speed. The paramedics are talking right over your head, their voices low and urgent as they exchange rapid medical jargon, checking your vitals and adjusting the oxygen mask over your face.
You try to focus on their faces, on the rhythm of the sirens, on anything outside of your own body, but you are spiralling completely out of control.
The physical pain in your lower abdomen is a sharp, twisting blade, but the mental torture is a thousand times worse. Your mind is a vicious vortex. All your strength is fracturing into dust under the weight of your fear.
Not like this, you think, your hands trembling so violently you can barely press them against the damp fabric of your sweatpants. Please, God, not like this.
Just days ago, you were lying on a blanket under a universe of stars, listening to Yoongi weave a beautiful, quiet tapestry of your future. You could still hear the warmth of his voice promising a house in the countryside, a swing set, piano lessons, and a lifetime of protected peace. Now, the contrast is suffocating. You are trapped in a sterile, metal box, drowning in the scent of antiseptic, completely alone.
The ambulance screeches to a halt at the ER bay, and the back doors fly open. The rushing movement starts again. The wheels of the stretcher clicking furiously against the linoleum floor, the hospital hallway's bright, harsh ceiling lights passing over you like dizzying streaks of white. You are wheeled into a small, curtained triage cubicle, and suddenly, the paramedics vanish, replaced by an ER nurse who hooks you up to monitors that beep too loudly.
And then, they leave you for a moment to page the OB/GYN on call.
The sudden silence behind the fabric curtain is loud enough to split your head open. You sit propped up on the bed, staring at the ceiling, and the spiral turns into a suffocating avalanche.
Your breathing hitches, turning into shallow, panicked gasps as you pull the oxygen mask away from your face. Your chest tightens so much that you feel like you are being crushed by an invisible weight. The guilt you fought off weeks ago breaks through your defences with a vengeance.
Did I do this? The voice screams in your head, making your eyes sting with hot. Did I ruin it? I panicked too much in the beginning. I stayed up too late waiting for him. I stressed about his idol schedule, I worried about the fans, and I let myself get overwhelmed. My body is failing. I couldn't even keep our baby safe for three months.
The monitor beside the bed registers your skyrocketing heart rate, its beeping turning into a frantic, continuous whine. You grip the metal rails of the hospital bed, your knuckles white, your teeth chattering from shock and dread. You look desperately at the gap in the curtain.
Where is he?
You know he’s coming. You know, the second he heard your voice, he tore through the label executives. But the terrifying possibility of him walking in, only to find everything gone, makes you want to crawl out of your own skin. You are terrified of the silence that might be waiting for you on the ultrasound screen. You are terrified of seeing the light die in your husband's eyes.
"Yoongi," you sob out into the empty, sterile cubicle, your voice small, broken, and utterly stripped of the grit that usually keeps you standing. You pull your knees up to your chest, curling into a tight, shivering ball on the scratchy hospital sheet, completely swallowed by the terrifying, lonely darkness of the spiral, praying desperately for his footsteps to shatter the silence.
Thirty minutes later, the heavy fabric curtain of the triage cubicle is ripped back with a violent, jarring screech of metal rings.
Yoongi bursts into the room.
He looks entirely unrecognisable, stripped of the polished, untouchable idol persona that the world knows. He is still in his sweat-drenched dance clothes and his hair is a chaotic mess against his forehead from where his beanie had been ripped off. But it is his face that makes your breath catch in your throat. He is entirely pale, his skin a ghostly, translucent white that bleeds out all the colour from his lips. His eyes are wide, dark, and swimming with a raw, unchecked terror that goes bone-deep.
He doesn't say a single word. He doesn't look at the monitors, he doesn't look at the nurses, and he doesn't care about the world outside that curtain. His eyes lock onto your shivering form, and in three stumbling strides, he is at the side of your bed.
He lunges forward, throwing his upper body over yours and pulling you fiercely into his arms. He clutches you against his chest, his hands burying deep into the fabric of your oversized hoodie as if he is trying to physically pull you back from the edge of a cliff. His entire frame is shaking like a leaf caught in a gale, his heart hammering against your collarbone in an erratic rhythm. He just holds you, burying his face in your hair, his breath hitching over and over again. "I'm here, baby. I'm here," he murmurs, followed by a kiss to the top of your head. And it's enough to bring you back from the cliff edge.
The suspense in the room reaches a suffocating peak when the heavy wheels of the ultrasound machine rattle into the cubicle. The doctor follows, her expression tight and solemn, carrying an aura that makes the air in the room completely unbreathable. The overhead lights are dimmed, plunging the space into a shadowy twilight, save for the harsh, blue-white glow of the monitor.
The doctor speaks in quiet, hushed tones, apologising gently as she squirts the ultrasound gel onto your lower stomach. The slick fluid feels horrifyingly cold against your skin, a cruel, mocking contrast to the warm starlight of the hill just days ago.
Yoongi slowly shifts, refusing to untangle his lower body from yours. He sits on the edge of the mattress, his face just inches from yours. His large, pale hand slides back into yours, his fingers locking between yours in a grip so fiercely, painfully tight that your knuckles turn entirely white and your fingers begin to ache. You welcome the pain. You cling to it because it is the only real thing left in the room. His eyes are fixed on your face, his jaw clenching so hard the muscle ticks beneath his pale skin, his thumb tracing back and forth over the back of your hand.
You force your eyes away from him, turning your gaze to the black-and-white monitor. Your eyes burn with hot, unshed tears, blurring the screen as the doctor presses the plastic transducer firmly into the gel and glides it slowly across your abdomen.
Please, your mind begs, the voice small, broken, and desperate. Please, just let us hear the horse. Just let us hear the galloping horse.
The doctor moves the probe, angling it deeper into your pelvis. The static grey shadows shift on the screen, and then, the tiny, familiar shape of your baby swims into view.
But there is no motion.
The doctor pauses her hand, her thumb clicking a button on the console to activate the audio monitor. She dials the volume knob all the way up.
But there is only silence. A deafening silence that rushes into the room like a vacuum, swallowing every ounce of oxygen. The speakers don't erupt. They only hiss with a low, empty white noise, a flat, mechanical static that sounds like a dead wire. The tiny pixel on the screen is completely, utterly still. There is no rhythmic flicker. There is no heartbeat. The galloping horse has stopped running.
"I'm so incredibly sorry," the doctor whispers softly, her voice heavy with sympathy that cuts straight through the static. She doesn't keep looking at the screen; she gently lifts the probe, wiping the gel from your skin with a towel, and reaches over to turn off the monitor, plunging the room back into darkness. "There is no longer a fetal heartbeat. You’ve suffered a miscarriage.” She pauses. “I'll give you both some time alone."
The heavy click of the machine powering down echoes like a gunshot. The doctor steps away, pulling the fabric curtain shut behind her, leaving the two of you in the absolute vacuum of the cubicle.
And then, the world completely shatters into a million jagged, unrecoverable pieces.
The shock wears off, and the reality of the silence hits you in the chest like a physical blow. A raw, guttural scream of grief tears itself from the very depths of your throat. It’s a sound so broken it doesn't even sound like it belongs to you. You rip your hand from Yoongi's grip and bury your face in your palms, your entire upper body slamming forward onto your knees. You break down completely, your ribs racking with violent, uncontainable sobs that pull at the phantom empty space inside your lower belly. You weep for the house in the countryside, you weep for the swing set, you weep for the piano lessons that will never happen, your tears soaking through your fingers.
At your side, Min Yoongi breaks completely.
The leader, the unflinching artist, the man who holds the weight of a global empire on his shoulders, vanishes entirely, leaving behind nothing but a broken husband and a grieving father. A loud, choked sob rips past his lips, a raw, wounded sound that hits the quiet air. He throws his arms back around you, lunging forward to pull your violently trembling body flush against his chest once more.
He buries his face deeply into the crook of your neck, his large hands gripping your back so tightly it bruises. His shoulders shake violently, racking with heavy, broken, silent tears that instantly soak completely through the thin cotton of your hospital gown, burning hot against your bare skin. He holds you with a desperate strength, as if he is trying to squeeze the broken pieces of your reality back together, trying to absorb the blinding agony radiating out of you. He grips you like a drowning man clutching a lifeline, his own heart shattering into dust in the quiet darkness as he rocks his grieving wife, weeping for the universe you just lost.
The apartment feels entirely too large and suffocatingly quiet when you return home the next day. The silence weighs down on your chest like a block of concrete, making every breath a chore. You sit on the edge of the bed, staring blankly at the floor, wrapped completely in Yoongi’s oversized black studio hoodie. The sleeves cover your hands, but nothing can cover the hollow emptiness stretching inside your womb.
As the hours tick away, the grief mutates into something dark, ugly, and toxic inside your mind. The inner strength you usually pride yourself on feels entirely gone, leaving behind nothing but a raw, gaping wound of insecurity.
"I'm sorry," you whisper into the empty bedroom, your voice cracking, tears dripping off your chin onto the fabric of the hoodie. "I'm so sorry."
Yoongi walks into the room carrying a mug of warm herbal tea. He hasn't left your side for a single second, his own eyes bloodshot, his face pale and worn. The moment he hears your whispered apology and sees your slumped, broken posture, his heart bleeds. He sets the mug down on the nightstand and immediately crawls onto the bed behind you. He wraps his arms around your waist, pulling you tightly back against his chest, tucking his chin over your shoulder.
"Why are you apologising, babe?" he whispers against your ear, his voice thick, raw, and completely wrecked from crying. "You have absolutely nothing to be sorry for, my love."
"I do," you sob out, the toxic thoughts finally spilling past your lips as you turn around in his arms to face him, your heart bleeding out. You look into his swollen eyes, your voice rising in a panicked, heartbroken pitch. "I wasn't good enough, Yoongi. Your schedule is so crazy, and you were so happy, and you were dreaming about the future... and my body... my body isn't even good at making babies. I couldn't keep our baby safe. I couldn't give you the family you wanted. I ruined it."
"Hey! Look at me. Look at me right now," Yoongi commands, his voice dropping into a fierce register.
He grips your face in his large, warm hands, his fingers firm but incredibly gentle against your jaw, forcing your wild, tear-filled eyes to meet his. His eyes are swimming with a fresh wave of tears, but his gaze is filled with an absolute, undeniable intensity that demands to be heard.
"Don't you dare say that about yourself," Yoongi chokes out, a heavy tear spilling over his eyelashes and tracking down his pale cheek. "Don't you dare blame yourself. This was a tragedy, Y/N. It is a horrible, heartbreaking, unfair tragedy, but it is not your fault. You did not ruin anything. You are the most perfect, incredible, resilient woman in the world, and you did absolutely nothing wrong. Do you hear me? Nothing."
"But the baby—"
"I love our baby, and I am grieving our baby with every single piece of my soul," Yoongi says, his voice cracking completely as a sob escapes him. He presses his forehead firmly against yours, closing his eyes as his tears mingle with yours on your cheeks. "But I love you more. I married you, Y/N. Not a future child. You. For three years, you have kept me here, you're my entire world. We can try again, if that's what you want. And if we never try again, if it's just you and me in that countryside house forever, that is also a perfect life to me. You are more than enough. You are everything I will ever need, and you never have to be sorry for something you didn't do."
The raw honesty in his voice pierces through the thick layer of guilt in your mind. You let out a broken cry, wrapping your arms around his neck, and Yoongi pulls you down onto the mattress with him.
He tucks you securely under the heavy, warm duvet, pulling the blankets up to your chin. He wraps his entire body around yours like a protective shield, tangling his legs with yours so tightly that there is no space left between you. Yoongi slides his large, warm hand underneath the fabric of the hoodie, splaying his palm completely flat against your bare, aching lower stomach. He doesn't do it to feel for a baby anymore; he does it to ground you to the earth, pouring his warmth, his love, and his healing energy directly into your skin.
He holds you through the long, dark hours of the evening, never letting go. He kisses away every fresh tear that falls, whispering sweet, soft, grounding praises into your hair. He tells you how strong you are, how much he adores you, and how you are going to heal together, day by day.
As the night deepens, the heavy, frantic sobs finally begin to fade, replaced by quiet, exhausted breaths. You close your eyes, listening to the steady, rhythmic beating of Yoongi's heart beneath your cheek.
"I've got you, babe," Yoongi murmurs softly into the quiet room, his lips pressing a soft kiss to the crown of your head as his hand gently strokes your stomach. "We're going to take all the time we need. We will always have each other."
Days go by. Then weeks. Then months. The dark does not stay sharp forever; eventually, it softens into something you can breathe through.
Outside your apartment, the city of Seoul continues its relentless, indifferent hum, illuminated by millions of artificial lights that try to drown out the night. But inside the quiet of your room, the only rhythm that matters is the slow rise and fall of Yoongi’s chest against your back, and the heavy, grounding thump of his heartbeat.
Yes, the galloping horse in the static has gone quiet, leaving behind a vast, echoing space. But over time, you learn that true strength isn't about refusing to break. It is about letting the pieces fall, knowing that the hands holding you are entirely devoted to helping you gather them back up.
Three years of marriage have taught you how to survive the noise of the world, but in this quiet room, you learn how to survive the silence.
Yoongi doesn't venture far from you for a while. He remains the protective husband you know him as, holding you fast against the current of your grief. He doesn't offer empty words or hollow promises to fix what cannot be mended by human hands. Instead, he just breathes with you, inhaling your sorrow, exhaling his devotion, making sure you know that you are not drowning alone.
Somewhere, far beyond the smog of the city, high up in the hills where you once lay on a plush blanket, a single star burns a little brighter than the others. It is no longer a destination, but a lighthouse; a quiet monument to a love that changed shape, but never truly died.
You close your eyes, letting the phantom weight in your chest ease just a fraction as you press closer into his warmth. The future you imagined and hoped for has fractured, but as Yoongi draws you tighter against his heart, whispering your name into the shadows like a sacred vow, you realise the foundation hasn't moved an inch. The house in the countryside may be quiet for now, but the universe that you built together remains intact. He is still your peace, you are still his anchor, and together, in the soft quiet of the dark, you will learn how to begin again.
