A door does not need to stop working completely before it requires attention.

Watch for these early warning signs:

1. The door starts scraping

Scraping near one corner can indicate that the door is beginning to sag or move out of alignment.

2. The gaps become uneven

Compare the clearance at the top, sides and bottom. A noticeable difference may point to hinge, frame or door-leaf movement.

3. The latch stops lining up

A difficult latch does not always mean that the lock is faulty. The door may have shifted away from the strike plate.

4. Rust appears around the hardware

Check hinges, screws, frame joints and lock components. Early surface corrosion is easier to manage than corrosion that has spread beneath a coating.

5. The door no longer closes by itself

For doors fitted with a closer, check whether the door returns to its fully closed and latched position.

Avoid repeatedly forcing, trimming or drilling a door before identifying what caused the problem.

This is particularly important for fire-rated main doors, where the leaf, frame, closer, seals and hardware should be assessed as one assembly.
