“CAP, there’s ---- there’s an accident. two-car collision on main and wellwood. one car flipped on it’s side, the other accordioned. whole intersection’s blocked off. major injuries.” ezra’s expression is already concerned. they get car accidents all the time, but never this bad. still, the lieutenant seems almost too worried. it’s just another moment before he finds out why. “the flipped car -- the license plate, it’s under your name ------ cap, it’s bryce.”
he arrives on the scene two and a half minutes later in a halston fire & rescue vehicle, two ambulances close behind. there’s police cars everywhere, abandoned by their drivers as they try to direct traffic. people have gotten out of their cars to witness the wreckage. usually, ezra doesn’t care, but this time, he’s livid. his boy is in that car -- how could anyone just stand there and WATCH?
the car’s on its side, and if ezra were thinking about it, he’d acknowledge that there’s no way the car is going to make it out in one piece. but that’s not what’s on his mind. right now, he’s getting out of the car and SPRINTING. the other paramedics are just starting to get out of the ambulances, equipment in hand, and they’re waiting for orders. so ezra gives them. “get your fucking asses in gear! MY KID’S in that car!”
suddenly, they’re moving, and two of them are getting out the jaws of life because there’s NO WAY they’re going to get that door open by hand. ezra’s already there, though, managing to pull himself up to stick his upper body through the shattered window. what he sees makes his stomach turn inside out and his chest ache. bryce.
“bry, look at me. ----- bud, hey. HEY. look at me. eyes on me. STAY AWAKE. ----- it’s me. it’s okay. it’s gonna be okay. i’m gonna get you out, okay? i got you.”
