i will say that like i Honestly can see arguments and scenarios for both sides of the poll (john does some Deeply insane shit to protect sam in the comics and so i feel like his fear of sam is more nuanced) But like. he does not point blank hate/abuse dean More than sam the way this site likes to pretend he does his relationship is complex and fucked up with both of them in VERY different ways! get more interesting takes!
“Did Jack Kline Violate the Geneva Conventions in Apocalypse World” - the greatest thread in the history of forums, locked by a moderator after 12,239 pages of heated debate,.
16 years later sam stumbles out of a basement in the middle of nowhere and sees his mom, and only knows it’s her because of photographs and he’s been hallucinating so much but no it’s her, alive. and he gets in the car with her after days of being tortured and drives who knows how many hours back to the bunker and he keeps looking at the back of her head and thinking about how he once screamed “she’s not my mother, she’s a damn rotting corpse” at his dad (her husband). and then he brings her tea.
there is a certain subsection of fans on this site who will say or agree that "supernatural is about cycles of abuse" and then get upset when dean's actions are referred to as abuse. and to that i say: then what's the point of bringing up cycles anyways

heard the prequel got greenlit
kicking the hornet's nest one more time before i go do my actual job but i think part of people's reluctance to look at dean's role perpetuating the cycle is because dean is complex, layered, we can point to reasons why he acts the way he does and acknowledge that he isn't irredeemable but he's hurt and he hurts in return. but john is also a huge factor in the cycle and acknowledging you can be a perpetrator of abuse and not be irredeemable or like. cartoonishly evil opens john up to the same kind of analysis and a lot of people just have an Extreme hatred for john that ignores that he is not in fact just a cardboard cutout of a character with "evil hateful dad deserves to burn in hell" scrawled across it
tangentially related to the current dash topic i think about this scene all the time and think it might be the single most insane series of lines in the entire show
