The Viceroy (Limenitis archippus) can easily be distinguished from the Monarch by the presence of the black bar across the middle of the dorsal hindwing. While it was originally thought that this butterfly was a simple mimic of the Monarch, which predators avoid because of the taste, it turns out that the Viceroy also have a bitter taste, and are unpalatable to birds and other predators. 

Monarch caterpillar (Danaus plexippus). Because they feed on several types of Milkweed (Asclepias sp.) these caterpillars ingest toxins known as cardiac glycosides, giving them a very foul taste to predators.
