Over and over, I kept encountering author-illustrator Bruce Degen's "Jamberry" (1982), but wasn't familiar with it from my own childhood. When I finally opened it up this week, though, I couldn't put it down! It's no wonder this lovely book has been in print for over 25 years! Rhythm and rhyme, and the musicality of nursery rhymes, are so important to early childhood language acquisition, and Degen has one of the best ears for these that I've ever come across. The bouncing, cheerfully imagined adventure of a little boy and a jolly bear on the hunt for berries of all sorts, as many as they can find, will have you and your little ones chanting along gleefully and begging for more!
