Barbara looks away from him at first. She’s ashamed, guilty, hating that she has to relieve this moment. “I had no choice. I just—he had a gun. There was a woman in between us and I couldn’t let him hurt her.” Shaking her head, she wipes stray tears from her eyes. “But if I had taken the time...if I had just thought it through..” She pauses, gathering all her strength to keep talking. “All I could see was this woman just—just standing there screaming and I reacted. I threw the batarang to knock the gun away but she moved.” The image of the batarang hitting her in the side of the head isn’t one she’ll get rid of easily. “He got away and I ran to her. I held her as she died, Bruce.” She finally meets his gaze. “And then I ran.”

Bruce knows that he won’t live forever, but he also isn’t sure if he’ll live longer than all of his friends- Which worries him because he knows he won’t be able to save everyone. Bruce, even though he tries to say he loves being alone, he actually hates it and he’s terrified of being alone.
