“ maybe we are broken. but we put ourselves back together. we survived. that’s what makes us so powerful. and as for family—well, blood is always family, but family doesn’t always have to be blood ”
Looking at Arya made Sansa feel so sad. It was not that her sister stood before her broken or scarred, or at least it did not seem so visibly. She knew that the young girl had gone through traumas, none of the Stark children were the innocent birds they had been before their father was murdered. The elder she-wolf still remembered the sight of her Lord father's head mounted on a stick, something Joffrey thought was so delightful. Remembered the look of emptiness in his beautiful eyes. Remembered the sight of blood still dripping from where his neck had been severed from his body. The thoughts, the images, made her want to choke on her own bile. But she was thankful Arya had been spared it, Arya, who was so much like their father it hurt. If she saw the great Ned Stark in any of her siblings, it was Arya.
She looked just like him, and God's knew that he would be proud of the little warrior that she had become. Sansa had frowned upon her sisters want for chaos when they were little, constantly wishing that she could be more girly, more lady like. More like her. But now, now Sansa was so relieved that Arya was nothing like her. So relieved that she had wanted to learn how to fight, because if she had not... Well, if Sansa had wound up in the younger girls shoes, she would have died. Would not be standing here today.
The amount of respect and love that the redhead harbored for her sister was unbearable.
"We survived." She repeated the words quietly, fingers idly fiddling with the fabric of her dark skirts. "We survived, but at what cost? Robb is miserably stuck in the capital, Jon is stuck on the wall, I am cold and heartless, you had to become a lethal machine, Bran isn't even Bran anymore and... Rickon's wild." The last bit made her huff a little laugh. Rickon had always been a bit of a wild pup, but things had made it worse with time, for sure. "And for all we've done, all we've fought for, the North is still no safer than it was with Joffrey sitting on this damned throne."
