King Rats from the flood have caused people to go missing.  After realizing her parents are two of the many people missing, she trudges through the storm in search of them only to find that buildings are destroyed.  She then finds next door neighbor, 9 year old Jonah calling for help.  In Queens, the water is rising increasingly, and she decides to go to higher land to protect herself and Jonah.  After walking for a few days, she and Jonah end up in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium.  They come across large amounts of food at the concession stands where they eat lavishly, until they meet Mannie and Anne.  Angry that someone has come across their territory, they scold the girls.  After much hesitation, Mannie and Anne finally decide to let Elizabeth and Jonah stay.  Elizabeth decides to use her con artist ways and uses Jonah to her advantage due to his young age.  She tells him to cry and works up crocodile tears of her own and the two trick their way into staying there.  Elizabeth and Jonah decide they are going to steal all of their food and leave to find a better place, but Jonah starts to not like Elizabeth's attitude.  She becomes more demanding, scolding him if he doesn’t steal enough extra food.  He feels Elizabeth used to be such a nice girl, and now she's turned into a cold hearted monster.  Mannie and Anne find out Elizabeth's plan and kick her and Jonah out of the stadium.  Elizabeth realizes she must go back to the compassionate girl she used to be in order to save herself and Jonah.  After apologizing and begging, Mannie and Anne take Elizabeth and Jonah back.  In the end, Elizabeth, Jonah Mannie, and Anne become a new family. 

Cliffhanger- what happens to their parents?

To be continued- after a few days of getting along and becoming a new family, they hear noise.  More people have found out about this Yankee Stadium shelter and the other territories are moving in.  Elizabeth, Jonah, Mannie, and Anne must fend for themselves so they can survive.
