@brokencrow: “That barricade won’t hold them off for long. We need to move. They'll have heard the gunshot.” prompt she's thinking back on: “You’re naive if you think that the government’s going to fix this. We’re on our own. Us and the infected.”
had it really only been two weeks since he'd called her naive, back at the ambush point? it felt like that had come from a different lifetime. she'd bitten her tongue then, not wanting him to know just why there had been so much security at the intersection between the two QZ's -- far more than a standard supply transfer out of a failing QZ really necessitated -- & she bites her tongue now because she knows he's right. still, she can't deny she's shaken by how close the runner had gotten before he had dropped it.
she hadn't even known he was carrying that gun.
... naive, indeed.
they're not terribly far an abandoned QZ though, according to the map she'd stolen. that's what's giving her hope - the base supplies will be picked over, & the infected might roam freely, but all of the type of supplies she was looking for would be difficult for anyone else to access. FEDRA had the same keycard access for everything though, & she'd clung to the lanyard even as she'd bolted. so long as at least one generator was running, she could probably get into their office with it & find their records. she needed to know where the rest of her family had been taken.
wherever he was taking her was likely better than what had awaited her in Boston, & that's why she'd let him convince her into driving one of the stolen FEDRA cars right out of the QZ in the midst of all the chaos. she finishes siphoning the last of the gas & wills her hands to stop shaking. ' I'm done, we can leave once I get this in the car but we still have to stop one more time. '
