         it  seems  his  birthday  wish  was  granted  ,    for  all  he  truly  wanted  was  to  spend     (   what  was  left  of    )     today  with  the  one  at  his  doorstep.      as  a  result  ,    seeing  that  beaming  smile  and  hearing  that  delightful  timbre  of  his  once  he  opened  the  door —— it  instantly  made  his  birthday  happier  than  he  could’ve  ever  imagined.      he  remembered  !      of  course  he  remembered  !      there  was  ,    on  the  other  hand  ,    the  slight  chance  and  bustle  of  the  Whos  down  in  Whoville  reminding  him  ,    but  the  Grinch  would  rather  believe  this  was  of  his  own  doing.      after  all  ,    a  last  minute  present  for  a  birthday  wouldn’t  be  something  so  extravagant  like  a  cake.      the  taller  one  couldn’t  help  but  smile  brightly  ,    his  heart  swelling  with  joy.

          ❛    you  remembered —    ❜        he  uttered  under  his  breath  ,    ogling  at  the  talent  and  hard  work  that  must’ve  been  put  into  the  effort  of  the  cake.      the  Grinch  then   blinked  ,    coming   back   to   reality.         ❛    ah  -  i   mean  ,    thank   you  ,    Bricklebaum  !      you  didn’t ..  have  to  get  me  anything.      i  would’ve  been  happy  enough  if  you  came  over  to  tell  me  happy  birthday.     ❜       then  ,    guilt.      the  walk  up  the  rest  of  the  mountain  must’ve  been  tedious  for  the  man —— through  that  blowing  breeze  and  chilly  air  ,    and  keeping  the  cake  in  tact  too ...  oh  ,    he  felt  so  bad  all  of  a  sudden.

      at the mere mention of a mistletoe ,  the Grinch’s heart skipped a beat ,  following the other’s gaze to the piece of ceiling above them and sure enough —— there dangled the iconic ,  accursed plant.   then ,  his heart beat rapidly ,  stomach somersaulting within him.   “  ohh ,  dear ...  ”    he mumbled ,  nearly frozen solid in fear in spite of the rather warm interior of Bricklebaum’s home.   they knew what that meant.   and the man before him even reminded the Grinch ,  unfortunately.

          before he even stopped looking at the mistletoe in a glare of disbelief ,  he wondered to himself ...  how did Bricklebaum notice that ?   the green fellow didn’t even notice ,  and his head is more close to the ceiling than the other’s !   he was probably just very attentive to these little things ...  no way it was deliberately placed there ...  right ?   the Grinch gulped.

        releasing a shaky sigh ,  he shut his eyes and squatted to the other’s height in that same instance.   when they opened ,  the Grinch felt his stomach jump even more now ,  his digits clawing into his knees out of the nervousness that crawled through his body.    “  err ...  uhh ..  s - so ,  what n ——  ”    but he’s cut off at the warm palms that gently pull at his jaw and bring his head closer to the others until ——

        their lips connect.   it’s in this moment he wished he was a better kisser ,  since sitting here doing ...  nothing was probably the worst thing he could do.   but the butterflies and fireworks that brought him alive from the inside out were too much of a distraction.   his nerves were ignited but at the same time put to rest ,  his grip on his own fur easing.   the uncomfortable wide eyes he held flutter shut within a few seconds ,  relishing the soft touch of Bricklebaum’s mouth pressed to his and the delightful scent he donned and the gentleness of his beard —— the list goes on of the smallest of things he noticed within these moments.   the warmth and softness of his hands ,  how tenderly his lips nudged against the Grinch’s in a satisfying ,  melting frenzy ,  and his own hands twitched to hold onto Bricklebaum in return but ...  before he could raise them from his knees enough they had parted.   and it was disappointing.   could it not have gone on for any longer ?   why did it have to stop ?   why did he not want it to end ?

          nevertheless ,  his lips quiver as he finally gazes at the other — his heart pounding so hard he was sure it had grew another size.   the Grinch gulped ,  at a loss for words ,  but the twinkle in his eye and how his mouth stood agape surely spoke enough for him.

         letting  people  in  was  never  an  easy  feat.      opening  up  was  one  thing  ,    yes  ,    but  when  it  came  to  letting  people  in  in  the  literal  sense      (    unto  his  own  abode    )      it  was  scarily  nerve  wracking.      sure  ,    he’s  let  Cindy  Lou  into  his  home  already  ,    but  that  was  only  recently —— and  this  is  Bricklebaum  we’re  talking  about  !      something  about  that  man  made  the  Grinch  stumble  and  trip  over  his  words  more  than  he’s  ever  before  ,    and  it  sent  his  heart  racing  !     he  couldn’t  place  his  finger  on  what  exactly  it  was  ,    but  that  wasn’t  something  to  focus  on.    after  all  ,   he’s  already  given  Bricklebaum  a  tour  through  most  of  his  home  ,   and  there  was  no  stopping  now.

      their  weight  on  the  big  red  chair  triggered  the  pulley  -  like  system  to  ease  the  two  of  them  down  to  the  workshop —— the  Grinch  sitting  on  the  arm  of  the  chair  anxiously  to  give  Bricklebaum  his  own  space  on  the  actual  seat.      once  they  reached  the  end  of  the  ride  ,    he  instantly  hopped  off  and  scampered  toward  the  actual  inventing  area  of  the  workshop.      while  showing  the  other  the  little  trinkets  he’s  made  and  his  various  tools  ,    he  noticed  Bricklebaum  eyeing  two  particular  contraptions  sitting  in  a  box  with  blueprints  and  papers  ,    collecting  dust.

      ❛    ah  ,    umm ...    i  guess  you’re  wondering  what  this  is  ..   ❜        the  Grinch  quickly  made  his  way  to  the  box  ,    pulling  out  one  of  the  curious  things.      they  were  plastic  ,    sleek  and  smooth  ,    looking  like  it  was  bought  from  the  store  ,    only  that  it  didn’t  have  a  price  tag  ———  for  the  Grinch  made  it  himself.        ❛    i  don’t  touch  this  anymore  since  i ..  used  it  when  i  stole  Christmas  ,    ❜        he  regretfully  reminisced  ,    swallowing.        ❛    but  ,    they’re  pretty  nifty.      i  call  it  my  Candy  Cane  Device — or  ,    devicES  ,    rather.      they  ,   uhh  ,    can  do  a  lot  of  things.    ❜
