you mentioned in your article that you're not sure why Calliope denotes active classes with (-) and passive classes with (+), in opposition to the yin/yang dichotomy. her interpretation of active/passive classes benefiting themselves/others can be seen as removing(-) and adding(+).

a very important part to the theory that active=self-centered and passive=others-centered is that selfish =/= bad and selfless =/= good!
sheās just prioritizing her own goal, which isĀ āsafety and happiness and peace for me and my friendsā, over other peoplesā goals. maybe the other people have good worthy goals too, but in her o, safety and happiness and peace should have priority, which is pretty reasonable i think. She does it for her own sake - because she wants everything to be nice and everyone to get along - but itās still a good outcome that helps other people.
and she reaches her goal by 1. affecting the way people are feeling, through her own actions and words (and possibly with a touch of magic), usually calming people down and cheering people up, and 2. by working hard to make her own personality likable & helpful, and offering advice to others on how to present themselves in a way that will cause less hurt feelings and conflict.
you could take the same class and give it to an evil character. the word manipulate has negative connotations for a reason. there are underhanded ways to control emotions, awful ways to change souls, and cruel goals you could reach with such methods. but it could go either way, because classpects arenāt necessarily good or bad. theyāre a realm to affect, and a way to affect it, not the effect itself.
