Sky was utterly exhausted, both from all of the cleaning that Crueger had assigned to him and from the emotional toll that the latest series of events had taken on him. He slowly made his way to his room, his wrist throbbing with pain as he attempted to ignore it. True to his word, Jack had stayed with him the entire time and had helped him clean all of the cement surfaces, despite Sky repeatedly telling him not to. About halfway through, the Blue Ranger realized that the reason that Jack was doing it was to keep him distracted. He’d learned that, if left to his own devices for too long, Sky would completely retreat into his own mind and become broody and hard to talk to. As much as Sky complained about Jack being there, he was grateful for it.
But now there was no Jack and no distractions to keep Sky from falling into the darkness that was his insecurities. He kicked off his shoes and crawled into bed, half collapsing face first into his pillow. After a moment, he turned to his side so that he faced the wall. Memories that he had once tried to fight began washing over him, drowning him in tidal waves of old feelings and images that he’d spent the last few hours trying to forget.
He had no idea how long he laid there, drowning in memories and sickened by the realizations that crept up on him. It was true what they said: hindsight really was 20/20. Dru’s betrayal had taken him by surprise, but now that he looked back, he realized that it really shouldn’t have. He could now see just how much of a manipulative shit that Dru was, how he’d so easily wrapped Sky around his finger, how he’d kept the now Blue Ranger under his thumb.
“Am I stupid?” The words escaped him almost unconsciously as Bridge entered the room, his voice barely above a whisper. “Am I really so fucking blind, Bridge?”

Sky grins at Bridge, something that he does a lot of when he’s drunk, and shrugs his broad shoulders. “I dunno.” The taller man shifts, his chin coming to rest on the other Ranger’s shoulder, looking up at him like a small child. “Too much. Not enough.” He nuzzles the smaller man, the smell of alcohol strong. “Love me.”
“You think? You could have been K I L L E D!” And then it finally hits Sky, making his hands tremble even as he grabs the front of Bridge’s jacket to shake him. “You could have been killed.” The last part is said a lot softer, almost a whisper as the anger slowly begins to fade and be replaced by relief. Bridge was there, solid and warm beneath Sky’s hands. He was safe and sound and not lying on the ground, broken, bleeding, and unmoving. His trembling hand comes to rest against Bridge’s cheek as he takes a deep breath, desperate to recenter himself.Â
Three days ago, Syd had finally weaseled Z’s birthday out of her and in that time, not only did she convince Sky, Bridge, and the Commander that it would be an excellent idea to throw her a surprise party, but she’d invited guests (including Jack, Ally, little Sam, and Piggy), gotten the food, the entertainment, and the venue together. A part of Sky wanted to question how the blonde Ranger was able to pull it off so quickly, but reminded himself that this was Sydney Drew and that she seemed to be capable of absolutely anything that she set her mind to. He was pretty sure that there were professional party planners who wished that they had even half of Syd’s talent and ability to think so quickly, an assertion that was cemented upon setting his eyes on the over the top decorations and the artwork that was the birthday cake.
Sky couldn’t help but smile at the fact that Z was utterly speechless upon seeing the party and its guests. He welcomed her tight hug, noting how she was trying to subtly wipe her eyes without anyone noticing. He loved events like this and was secretly thankful that they had still had the ability to throw parties like this, especially given the year that they’ve had.
Of course, it got to the point in the party where Sky began drifting towards the edge of the crowd. The familiar bittersweet ache had settled deep within his chest, curling around his heart and tightening its grip. He’d hoped that after everything that he’d gone through with Mirloc, he would be able to enjoy a party without the old grief settling in. Clearly, he was wrong.
He was picking at his cake when he noticed Bridge walking up to him. Sky opened his mouth to say something when suddenly his face was filled with familiar sugary sweetness. He blinked in surprise, momentarily speechless as he licked the cake and frosting from his lips. He stared at the smaller man for a long moment before taking in a deep breath, his hand subtly moving to his own slice of cake. “You’re gonna regret that so much...”

The taller man rubbed the back of his neck, features twisting into an expression of utter confusion as he tried to remember. He shook his head, hand dropping uselessly to his side. “Sorry, man. I don’t even know who I am, let alone you.” Every time he tried to remember something, anything, it was like running full speed and hitting a stone wall repeatedly.
The Blue Ranger slowly lowered himself so that he was eye to eye with his friend. There’s a fire burning in his eyes, an anger that Bridge could possibly feel even with his gloves on. He doesn’t need to have psychic abilities to know that Bridge is lying or to see that his friend is upset. He KNOWS Bridge and can practically read him like a book at this point.
They all knew the dangers of being a Ranger, knew that every time they suited up and stepped foot out into the field, they risked their lives. No one knew this better than Sky, who still could vividly remember the day that he lost his beloved father, a Ranger just like himself. No one knew how terrified he was of losing one of his own Rangers, one of his friends. No one knew that he tasted the fear in his mouth during every fight, every time he heard one of friends yell out in pain. No one knew the momentary paralyzing terror that would wash over him every time one of them was hit and lay on the ground, how he would briefly freeze until they moved again. Still, a part of him couldn't help but feel untouchable when they were riding the high of a victory.
Then the day came when his worst fears came to life. It was supposed to be a routine patrol, one that they've done a million times. He'd sent Bridge and Syd while he and Z had patrolled another part of the city. No one had expected Bridge and Syd to be ambushed by so many aliens. Syd's screams over the communicator were the most haunting sound that Sky had ever heard. He had never felt that level of terror before in his life, even when in their final battle against Grumm and crew. He didn't remember the ride over to their location, nor did he remember the fight. He just remembered how he forgot to breathe when he saw Bridge and Syd lying on the ground, unmorphed, bloodied, and unmoving.
He'd feared the worst when he saw how pale they were, especially Bridge. Sky had known before the doctor had even walked in, that same grim expression that he remembered from when his father died. The world tilted around him, nothing seeming real. More pain than he felt like he could handle ripped through his chest and made it hard to breathe. Someone was calling his name, but it sounded distant and distorted. The strength left his legs and he was suddenly on his hands and knees on the cold tile floor, his breathing coming in heaving gasps. There were hands on his shoulders and his back and people were trying to talk to him, but what they said didn't matter.
Bridge was dead.
Sky was the Red Ranger, he was their leader. He was supposed to protect them, to make sure that they stayed safe. If anyone was to die, it was supposed to be HIM. Not Z, not Syd, and most definitely not BRIDGE. Bridge was too full of life, too full of energy. The fact that he was dead couldn't be true. Not Bridge. Not after everything that they'd gone through together. He was supposed to be the one person that Sky didn't expect to ever LEAVE him in any way, shape, or form. He was like a little puppy that had been given food and a kind pat on the head, now latched onto him for life and always there to follow him around. Hell, Bridge had even promised him that he'd never abandon Sky. And now? Now, he’d gone and broken his promise. The bastard.
Bridge was gone because Sky had failed as not only a leader, but as a friend. He'd caused Bridge to go back on his promise and now he'd left Sky, just like his dad had. Ripped away forever, taken to a place that he couldn't touch or reach in anyway.
And with a sudden, sickening, jolt he realized that the screaming that had been hurting his ears for the last minute or so came from him. He also realized that Z was there, holding onto him with her face buried into his side, sobbing just as much as he was. She was clinging to him almost painfully, trying to ask him between her own heaving sobs to stop screaming. He was supposed to be the one holding it together and yet he was unable to.
The person that Sky cared about most in this horrible world was dead and he'd never even fucking told him how much he cared. And now? Now, Bridge would never know.
