my #7 Track of the Year for 2025 is...
"HIGH KNEES" by IVORY!
right at the end of the year, a statement track, that somehow flew under everyone's radar, despite being released on a decently-sized netlabel by an artist who has been dropping some bangers this year.
if "With me" is briddim's "Where We Belong", then this track is its "First Of The Year". it isn't just a great track, it's a demonstration of what this genre is about. it's an introduction to what briddim does best, and most efficiently. it is, from start to finish, briddim's fundamentals.
so why didn't it take off?
dude, i dunno. maybe because it is so simplistic? it's not that it does anything NEW in this genre space. it could be argued that even IVORY himself has done better. but i'm not the one saying that personally. to me, i think it's just that briddim is already such a wide space full of all sorts of interesting ideas. "First Of The Year" was a breakthrough moment for brostep that came along in the genre's mainstream infancy; briddim's definitely already broken through, with massive DJ sets and a growing following as EDM diehards flee from the current state of mainstage.
basically. if you weren't sure about briddim, listen to this track. it's the one with the highest likelihood of converting you. it's just a rail-grabbing wall of death from its perfect first drop to its closing frames. this is a track that should be way more important in briddim's development. and maybe this year's festival season will give it a "Phone Tap" / "TACTIX" moment. i certainly hope so.
my #10 Track of the Year for 2025 is...
"With me" by Wodd!
we all expected big things from Wodd. i know i did after last year. "Riddim Tale" was an experience, one of the best drops the genre has to offer. then "Made In Black" showed that he knew he had some big things to build up to. it all led to the release of this EP.
and it was quite a payoff indeed.
this may be briddim's "Where We Belong". a powerful, headbanging, emotional, robotic, dancefloor killing dubstep track. though there's less lyrics here, the hypnotic back and forth of the male and female vocals still give this an undercurrent of emotional weight. and the sound design gives this an almost industrial flavor, with the synth swaying against the drumbeat.
this is your final warning: briddim is here. it's taken over brostep in all the best ways. it's more compelling, cleaner, more focused. it's distilled bass music. it takes the best ideas from across the 140-150bpm spectrum, builds something completely fresh, and DEMANDS you headbang along. dubstep's not dead -- it got exposed to an evolution stone from pokemon.
I want to dance in the Palm Of Your Hand.
