I couldn’t speak for a few moments. “So what am I supposed to do?”

“Hey travelers, in for a drink or in for the night?” He flashed a big smile as he whipped the rag into his back pocket. He leaned on the table waiting for the answer. He seemed human, though I had seen so many different people in the past hour that I couldn’t be sure. Maybe he had pointy ears? No, just a few piercings. Or maybe his eyes were red or took up the whole eye or no, just green. Light green like the light through the trees. Or the water in the horse trough after it had been sitting out too long. No, better not to associate them with that.

              “Nope,” I didn’t say. I nodded, trying not to shake. Who would want to go somewhere that they knew was cursed? What if there was something worse in there? Were there actually spiders in there? Way too many possibilities. I was incredibly close to just turning around and leaving but Adelaide took my hand and I was through the door before I could say anything else.

I was sitting on a chair on a cliff. Below me, a dark sea crashed against jagged rocks poking out. The drop was severe. The chair was made out of an intricately carved wood. Mahogany, I guessed. Sounded fancy enough for the fancy carvings. Though it easily could’ve been some stained oak or cedar or elm or… Either way, this was not where I expected to be.
