#GETOUTSIDE: ON THE RUN WITH BRENDAN FALLIS
From the moment Canadian DJ and entrepreneur Brendan Fallis landed in New York City, he hit the ground running—literally. “Nothing has been easy for me to come by since I started working,” the former freestyle skier-turned-runner says. “It has all taken way more effort, determination and patience than I could have ever imagined. In my mind, running is all about setting a goal for yourself and pushing each step until you succeed.” Today, miles and miles away from his humble starting point, he has become an in-demand entrepreneur and DJ, creating chart-topping hits and spinning for large crowds across the world.
In this exclusive interview with DFS, he shares his love for the finish line and his tips for staying fit while on the road.
You travel a lot for work. What is your fitness routine like when you're away?
I pack a jump rope with me everywhere I go. And although they can be quite bleak at times, there’s always some sort of gym in every hotel to work out in. Balance is the key. It’s easy to fall into bad eating habits while traveling. I try to get on Google and do my research beforehand to make sure I can locate some local healthy spots and find them as soon as I arrive. As long as you allot time for sweat and some good food, you can keep yourself on track. Airports are the easiest place to slip up food-wise, so make sure to grab that banana and salad instead of the sandwich or burger, and drink lots of water at every stop. Â
Which sport is most important to you?
I grew up not enjoying running very much. As an adult, it has become the sport that has shaped my life the most. It has taught me to push myself. I still don’t enjoy the mental strain of a long run but I'm addicted to the feeling of struggling to succeed.Â
Exercise, in any form, definitely relates to anything you do in life. It all comes down to setting goals and working hard to achieve them. Running has helped me to do just that—put me alone on a road with no one to keep me going but me.
What are your top three tips for getting in shape this summer?
1. Try to cut back on red meat. We all love a good burger in the summer, but not only is it the largest culprit of deforestation, it also is one of the foods that ages your body the quickest.
2. Get into Tabata-style workouts. It's a great way to push your body into burning fat quickly. It can be easily done by sprinting on a treadmill. Simply run for 20 seconds, stop for 10, and repeat eight times for a total of four minutes.
3. Mix it up! Too often we get stuck in the same workout style and our body stops responding. Take a spin class, do pilates, go for a run, hike, swim. Break out of your mold of just hitting the gym and try something new every now and then.
Where in the world has deejaying taken you?
Deejaying has taken me around the globe. I’ve been super fortunate to see a ton of countries I never thought I would have. One of the most memorable trips I took was going to play a festival in Moscow. I didn’t know if I’d ever get to Russia so that was amazing in itself. When I woke up the day of the event, it was cloudy and raining, which, as we all know, is not good for an outdoor festival. But the city decided to launch propane and dry ice rockets into the sky to clear the clouds. It was one of the craziest things I’d ever seen, and sure enough, the clouds cleared over the city and the sun shined all day. The party had to go on!
What are some of your #mustpack travel essentials?
I always pack a jump rope, eye cream, plain white leather sneakers, a pair of sunglasses, my phone, and an electric toothbrush in my four-wheel suitcase.
Why did you choose to call New York City home?
For me, the city has an energy that is unrivaled anywhere else I’ve been. You could be in your apartment and super tired, but as soon as you walk outside, the energy will captivate you and give you a second wind. I really feed off culture and New York City has a ton of it. Some say as prices rise and it becomes more expensive to live here, the culture and heart of the city is disappearing, but I believe that it continues to re-invent itself. One of the best parts about a big city is having to be “in the know,” discovering places you didn’t know existed, and experiencing things you never thought would exist. That’s why New York is amazing and why I continue to love it.
What is the best way to explore the city?
1. Rent a Citi Bike and bike up the West Side Highway! It’s such a beautiful ride and a great way to see all different parts of the city. If you make it as far as Dinosaur BBQ, you’ll be incredibly happy.
2. Walk The High Line. It’s so nice to see a city make the most of a once unsightly structure in the neighborhood, and do it in such an artistic, well-designed way.
3. Go to the Comedy Cellar. Sunday night is the best, in my opinion, as they frequently have established guests. But, in any case, you will get one of the better ab workouts you’ve had in a while.
Head to the gym, hit the streets or sail into the horizon with some of our favorite travelers this summer. It's time to #getoutside.
