☆ ━━━ Cloud is inside his office, sitting on the stiff black chair as he cradles the silver phone in his hand. The call seems important, as the door to the room is cracked, whereas normally it would be open.

He talks quietly to the other end, mumbling in the hush and leaning an elbow on his desk, eyes flicking to the picture of his supposed new family--there Tifa hunches smiling and huddled over Marlene and Denzel, while Cloud stands a little to the left, awkward and hurt even in such a picture that is otherwise happy. He is marring their lives, but he doesn’t know how to tell Tifa this.

His eyes then go to the yellow flower lying just beneath the picture. This is his reminder: you don’t deserve to be happy, as the flower represents who should also be in the picture, but can’t be. 

( It’s my fault. )

Cloud sits back in the chair, the coiled wiring of the phone swishing at his movement. 

“Rufus--I don’t care about your politics,” Cloud says with a harsh edge, one that is rarely found in his voice. His tone is colder than usual. “I just want to know if you can locate more Jenova remnants or you can’t.”

There’s a pause as Rufus no doubt goes on one of his eloquent tirades of meaninglessness. 

“The sample I gave you came from the North Crater--I told you that--”

The door creaks open, but Cloud doesn’t notice. He’s too enthralled in his conversation with a President of a broken empire. 

“Good,” Cloud says finally, relenting and his shoulders relaxing, drooping again as normal. “You know why I want to find Jenova--to end this, all of it. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

And Cloud clicks the phone into its placeholder, shaking his head. He twirls his chair around and is greeted with the sight of Tifa lingering in the doorway.

perhaps  she  was  being  a  little  dramatic  in  her  response  by  curling  her  lips ,  scrunching  her  nose ,  and  waving  her  hands  toward  her  mouth  like  it’d  waft  the  bad  taste  away .  “  tifa ,  i  adore  you  but  . . .  whiskey  is  whiskey ,  no  matter  the  quality ,  and  it’s  nasty  !!  ”
