But imagine a world where there's at least some will-they-won't-they before that, right. Like maybe Hollypaw/leaf is too in her own head about being a loyal clanmate and convinces herself that if she can be with the clan deputy it'll erase any doubt. So she and Brambleclaw have a series of interactions where there's mutual pining developing, but he has to keep pushing the "no, this is wrong, we can't."

I always figured that Bramble and Holly had one of the closer relationships before the big news breaks. They have that really cute "You're my little thinker" moment, and generally she seems to admire him since he's clan deputy and well-respected etc etc.

In canon when the news breaks, the three all start wanting nothing to do with Brambleclaw, even though he explicitly didn't know about the lie. This is fine (no one behaves rationally in a situation like this), but I think it's easy to imagine that Hollyleaf, at least, would find some comfort commiserating with him, who she views as another "victim" of the situation.

Both of them would have a lot of strong emotions going on at this time (especially if it's after Hollyleaf does a murder). They'd both lament how they used to have this close father-daughter relationship that was taken away or invalidated by the truth of the situation. This is a ridiculous way to look at it, of course, but it's how they feel in their emotionally charged state.

So what do they do? "We can still be close." Uncertainty, but they spend more and more time together in and out of camp. He hasn't laughed in a while, but she makes him laugh. She hasn't purred in a while but he makes her purr.
