Let’s go into Alternis and Braev, though, since they’re who I really wanna talk about right now, because people don’t talk enough about these two. Their origin story is just so goddamn heartwarming–and breaking. Alternis is the kid on the streets who was abandoned as a baby, he’s hated and ignored, he’s on the constant edge of death, it’s really a wonder how he survived. And he can’t even speak out against it because this is accepted as the norm, no one is going to call these people out on their bullshit, so he just stayed in the hellhole. This is in the so-called most devout city, populated by women of supposed modesty and purity, a place renowned for its piety and strong moral fiber, before DeRosa’s group set about bringing it to ruin. Alternis’ early life is a fucking testament to the hypocrisy of the Crystal Orthodoxy, and it’s obvious he is well aware of it.  Can you imagine how Braev must look to him, a man (a rarity in Florem) in shining armor pulling him out of that, giving him food and shelter and self-worth, whom tells him that he’s going to tear down this world of sanctimonious bullshit and build a home for him and other victims like him. Braev doesn’t become a father to him, he becomes Alternis’ savior. And then he goes the extra mile and brings him into his family, something Alternis has never known and now protects zealously. Is it any wonder that the Dark Knight devotes himself to the Templar, that he struck down the Fire Vestal for him (Was that ever confirmed to be Alternis? I can’t remember, but I bet your ass it was.), that he follows Braev’s every command–even if it means to stand against Edea, the love of his life?

And then there’s Braev, whom doesn’t see a soldier, but a son. This man was embittered by the faith which he once believed in with all his heart (Derosso’s parallels between him and Edea were spot-on, man), so much so that he took up arms and led a rebellion against them. This man has seen first-hand the crimes of the Crystal Orthodoxy, and then he’s confronted with this little boy–starved, hurt, alone, hateful–he meets perhaps the greatest victim of the Crystalists’ hypocrisy just as he’s about to go to war. And it’s like it’s the final straw. (I’m going by the timeline established in all the in-game texts, so perhaps I’m a bit off.) He takes this kid in, saves him from the darkness that nearly swallowed him, and then he rains hell on the Orthodoxy. He may not be proud of the actions he took, but he does not regret them.

But going back into his relationship with Alternis, just look at how Braev talks to him. Yes, he commands the boy, but he never criticizes him, never berates him, even if he fails. In fact, he only ever seems to encourage Alternis when he is not commanding him. Furthermore, he is most candid with Alternis, more than anyone else, even his own daughter. It is to him, not Derosso, the more powerful Council member, that he entrusts with the task of killing Airy, with knowledge of what’s really at stake here, more than Crystalism vs. Anticrystalism. Not even Kamiizumi or Edea have this much faith placed in them; perhaps this is because Braev’s plans for them involved them making the world of Anticrystalism a better place to live (i.e. reforming the more unsavory characters within the Duchy), but the fact remains that Alternis is the only person Braev has ever told the whole truth to, and is the only one he believes can stop not just the Wind Vestal and Airy, but his own daughter, whom has demonstrated more strength and cunning than I think either previously expected. That amount of faith is the kind you see not in a commanding officer to his subordinate, but a father to his son.

Alternis may never see himself as anything more than an unworthy street urchin thankful for his savior, but Braev has clearly never considered him less than his son. And honestly, there’s not perhaps any other interaction that makes me smile softly at my game-screen than theirs. Ringabel and Edea may make me laugh and cry in equal measures, make my heart burst out of my chest with the terrifying number of feelings they invoke, but they don’t bring this warmth to my heart that is both somber and content. And I hope, perhaps with time, Alternis will come to terms with the realization that whether he ever manages to win Edea’s heart or not, he has always and will always be a part of the Lee family.
