You are 13 years old, and one day. You have survived what has to be the worst birthday in the history of birthdays. And now, you are on a golden alien space ship. That last bit would make for a pretty sweet dream life, especially since you had slick new powers, but it came with a cost.
Everything came with a cost.
Even your sister did. After all, you gained Jade as a sister, but there was the small matter of your father. Your dad was still there, it had been less than a full day since he’d died, along with Rose’s mom, Rose, and yourself.
But you’d gotten better. And so had Rose.
Didn’t mean their bodies weren’t still there.
That was the real problem. There were bodies everywhere. Sure, none were on the ship, but you couldn’t just leave them there.
Especially not a particular three.
All those others, they were sad, but they weren’t death, not for you. You knew Dave and Rose were still alive.
But as much as you avoided thinking about it, you had to do something about your dad.
You needed to give him a proper burial.
You were 13 and you didn’t know how to deal with death. You didn’t know what to do. You didn’t have a clue. This was not something you were prepared for, and you still couldn’t feel anything. None of this seemed real, after all, how could it? Only you had slept, and slept more than once, but none of it went away. The gold Prospit warship wasn’t any less gold every time you opened your eyes. This was your reality now, no matter how impossible it was.
And you had to send Jade to take care of your dad. You just couldn’t do it on your own. She seemed to understand, and you even had a moment where you just stayed silent in the memory of everyone who had died.
There was a whole dead world now. After all, you weren’t the only ones to lose people. You were just the only ones to survive. You were the only ones to mourn.
And that was even more impossible.
But, as you laid in bed and you became 13 years old and 2 days, you started to cry. This was all too much. It wasn’t ever going to stop being too much. No matter what you did, you would never be able to make it better.
It hurt deeper than anything you had ever imagined would.
Maybe it would be better tomorrow.
