For The Harvest Is Great | On 26 March, a Government Gazette stated in section p.5 (6) (a) (e) that certain cellar and harvest work was deemed ‘an essential service’. The amended section reads: “harvesting and storage activities essential to prevent the wastage of primary agricultural goods.” This infers that during the lockdown period, in a responsible manner, the last of the harvest can be brought in, and certain cellar processes can continue, in order to ensure that crop is not wasted. In these uncertain times, the dedicated advocacy (of Vinpro and SALBA, with the assistance of key stakeholders like AgBiz, Agri-SA and Agri Western Cape) has worked to secure the remainder of the 2020 wine grape Harvest in South Africa. Nothing is certain, but these are certainly moments that will be forged in history.
