“did you know you have freckles?” yusuf asks. he leans in closer, looking down the bridge of nico’s nose; yusuf’s breath warms his cheeks.
“no,” he says. he swallows, and finds that his throat is dry.
“they’re lovely,” yusuf says. “like your eyes.”
“what about my eyes?” nico asks.
yusuf’s brow pinches in thought as he searches for the words. “clear,” he says. “like water in the sun.”
“i like your eyes.” the words fall mindlessly from his lips, coming to him with no thought at all. they seem too simple, clumsy and dull.
he is so close; nico cannot pick where on his face to look.
yusuf’s eyes crinkle as he smiles. “you do?” he says.
“yes,” nico says.
yusuf doesn’t say anything, doesn’t move. he is waiting, they both are.
nico turns his head away. just barely, he hears yusuf sigh.
