How amazing. Yet another person I've started following on YouTube for geeky shit casually mentioned The Autism.
Love reading your thoughts as always! Just curious about your tags - what do mean by you donāt think thereās an economic imperative to him being closeted? Iām not questioning your logic I just legitimately donāt know if I understand what you mean by that. Does that mean you donāt think that him theoretically coming out would have a negative effect on his money-making potential, basically? (I know there are a million other considerations but is that the gist of what you meant?)
Anon 2: You mean that career-wise coming out might be a smart choice for Louis?
*********
So Iām not going to be nearly as direct as anon 2 is, but I am going to explain my thoughts.Ā There are two aspects of Louis image and fandom that Iāve talked about quite a bit that I think are relevant.
The first is the lack of thirst among Louis fans. This is an interesting and complicated phenomena (and I think thereās some subliminated thirst out there), but basically I donāt think Louisā female fans are invested in imagining that heās their boyfriend.Ā He doesnāt have a significantĀ āhetā fanbase.
Second - Louis closet has some very particular characteristics.Ā Years of closeting him in the face of the fact that heās so easily read as gay has created a sort of binary - he is boxed in all sorts of ways.Ā Ā He has an active fan base that should be an asset, but it is often very unhappy, because they donāt believe the story he is telling.Ā Itās very difficult for him to stay in the closet and also keep the fan base happy.Ā Ā Iāve answered a few asks (and Iāve got some more in my to answer pile) on the question of why he isnāt doing things that make fans happier - and often itās really difficult to see what he could do.
If you put these two things together - what you get is that Louis isnāt gaining that much from a fan perspective by being closeted and thereās a real opportunity cost to him.Ā I think there are some other obstacles he faces that might look very different if he wasnāt closeted - most notably differentiating himself in a 1D solo career heavy market (the fact that Louis faces more of a problem of this than the others I think again comes back to that lost year - I think a lot of the obstacles Louis faces are related and compound on each other).
Now those two points I make may look very different to Louis or his team.Ā They have very different sources of information than I do. On top of that there may be all sorts of factors that Iām ignoring.Ā But I think the combination of lack ofĀ āhetā fans and the ways that his particular closet makes things harder means that the economics of Louisā career are not a big factor in why heās closeted.
I think we need to briefly take a divergence into my world view here. - because if people said that my JGG post was saying that Louis chooseĀ āthisā (whatever that meant and despite the fact that my philosophy of agency is in my bloody header) - I shudder to think how people might read what Iāve just said.Ā I think itās really important to have a materialist analysis of society, if I want to know why something is happening, or not happening, itās really important to look at whose economic interests are being served.Ā But you canāt only look at that - the world is complicated and messy and there are often other explanations as well.
In terms of the entertainment industry, economics is a huge part of closeting.Ā I donāt think that means that if thereās no economic reason to closet someone that theyāll come out.Ā But I do think if there is an economic reason to closet someone then itās almost impossible for them to come out.Ā
Now there is a custom suited elephant in the room in this discussion - because while I donāt think thereās an economic reason relating to Louisā career that prevents him coming out, until very recently there was a very good economic reason for him not to come out.Ā Until Harry released Medicine my thoughts were mostly about how difficult the situation it was for Louis to navigate all this closeted, but now my most optimistic thoughts (which as I said in the tags arenāt very likely) are that maybe he wouldnāt have to.
This is not a prediction - itās just that it feels possible to me in a way that it didnāt before. As Anon 1 says - there are many other factors - a lot of which we have no good information on (contracts, the thing I donāt talk about, etc. etc.) But Iām enough of a materialist that I canāt at least note the economic constraints and how they are changing.
Okay I need to stop reblogging stuff so I can write Judd being a big ol' softy on valentine's day with Kaelith... Or atleast start writing it cuz it's midnight apparently??

I'm going to look on a bright side.
I feel this awful over Caitlyn and Gran Gran... because the memories I have of them are wonderful... Truly wonderful.... And I treasure them more than any jewel on Earth, even if right now it's painful.
I have back up plans if Ii can't get into university. Good ones.
Even if my mum won't listen to me, my dad does. That's a lot more than some people and I'm grateful.
She doesn't listen, but she cares. Mum cares and really wants me to do well. Ā She may not be motivating me in the right way as it only makes me feel worse, but she's doing it out of nothing but care and conern.
My friends respect that Ii don't want to be alone... Ā I just want to be left alone. Even if they don't understand, they respect, which is all I want.
My drama group has a few select people who BLOODY RESPECT HOW HARD THIS PLAY IS FOR ME, and let me sit out on any scenes relating to teen suicides, and say it's okay for me to go see the required coursework production completely alone.
My friends are kind, my life is good, and I am still alive.
I'm sad, but alive.
And that's a bloody good side, in my opinion.
