The sentence burned something vicious on her tongue. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't keep her fingers from flinching, and gave into the urge to ball them into fists in her lap. He was concerned for her; she knew it. The warmth in his gaze hadn't faded, even if the steadiness of it made her feel pinned. Cornered.
The care in his questioning made it all the harder to lie, to keep the edge from her voice as she stitched a grin to her face that made her chest feel hollowed out. How could he know her, understand her anymore, when she felt a stranger to herself?
"Really, brother. I am simply fascinated with the music hall! Mr. Blavat's mysticisms are so breathtaking! It's perfectly safe, I swear it."
She extended one of her hands to lay over his own and gave a comforting squeeze. Maybe one kernel of truth among all her lies would make the acidic burn more bearable. She had to believe that all of this pain would be worth it.
"I will tell you everything, in time. Believe that for me, please."
