Ever since his mom went missing, Kidd spends a lot of time at the local public library. It’s free babysitting. He’s already exhausted all their on-site resources on clowns. He burned through over fifty books in a week (half of the books--or maybe more, or maybe less, he doesn’t really have the whole fractions thing down yet--were little baby books from the children section, but they still count).
A baggy man has a small stack of books at the checkout counter and he sounds like he’s haggling with the librarians for them. He knows books are free, right? That’s kind of libraries entire--and only--thing.
Kidd walks up to the counter that he would smoothly rest his elbow on if it could reach. His chin just barely crests over the countertop. He slides his library card over.
“This one’s on me, Elizabeth. You can put it on my tab.”
