The Cure's 6th studio album was released on 30 August 1985.
The Head on the Door saw the return of bassist Simon Gallup, who had left in 1982 after a number of confrontations with Robert Smith (Gallup has remained in the band ever since), and the first album with drummer Boris Williams.
Smith has stated that he wanted to make an album like Kaleidoscope (1980) by Siouxisie and the Banshees (of which Smith had once been a member), with "lots of different sounding things, different colours."
The album would prove to be the Cure's first international success, peaking at #59 in the US, #7 in the UK, and in the Top 20 in 6 other countries. It would go on to sell almost 1 million copies and be named Album of the Year by Melody Maker.
