Me: Hey, look at this neat creative thing I made in my free time. I had fun and am proud of the result.
My family (well meaning): So, can you make money off this somehow?
Me, on the inside: Oh my GOD. Why must every little bit of fun that brings me JOY immediately be commercialized somehow? Why must I sell my soul in service of the unfeeling mechanisms of capitalism? Not all value is monetary and to reduce my creative outputs to their monetary value is to rob them of the joy they brought me, turning them into just another set of tragic numbers. Just another datapoint in a doomed statistic. You have entered me in a race I am late to and unqualified for and everyone already there hates participating in.
Couldn't you just have said: "That's nice"? Because it is. Look at this creative thing I made. In my FREE time. Which I will not put a price tag on.
Me, out loud: "No. Not really... but thanks."
