Plot Lines by Johanna Kamradt, Christian Tate (click link to see picture enlarged) The 2011 Booker Longlist novels broken down by theme.
Reminiscent of a subway map, Kamradt creates a visually engaging and intuitive infographic. It combines two familiar types of data visualisations: pie charts and subway maps. It has clear colour attributions. Similar colours (such as light and dark blue) are kept separately from each other as to avoid confusion. The composition itself is well balanced. The eye is drawn more towards the themes piechart - as it should be since it is the purpose of the infographic. It is visually more imposing due to the negative spacing in the fanning our of the lines connecting the books to its relevant themes. However, a clear drawback is in the difficultly of reading the lines from book to theme due to the many intersections. The infographic fulfils its purpose as it clearly shows which themes are the most prevalent in Booker Longlist novels.
