Fibrous Dysplasia is a rare bone disorder which is the result of a genetic mutation that happens when we are in the womb although it is not hereditary. Every single person has the exact same chance of getting it and there is no cure. The only treatment is extremely invasive surgery, which more often than not, can cause more damage than it does good. Anyone who has known me long enough will know how many operations I'v had, how many years and months I spent on crutches, in wheelchairs and in hospital. I don't for one minute regret any of it and if anything the battles I have come through make me the person I am today but not everyone's so lucky and there have been countless times where I wish I could do simple things like wear high heels, go shopping for hours on end without having excruciating pain 15 minutes in or even just walk down stairs properly. Although Fibrous Dysplasia is a rare disease that doesn't mean we need to accept that nothing can be done! With more awareness and research there might well one day be a treatment that stops the horrific operations, chronic pain and lifelong physical and emotional scars.
