What mythical creatures from the early lore do you still accept to be real in Tolkien's canon? My long standard rule has always been that if something from the early drafts doesn't violate the later, more grounded and confirmed canon, then I can consider it canon.
For example, mermaids. The Oarni appear only early on and don't carry much weight at all in the story, but there's nothing later on negating their existence, so for me, I'm cool with counting it as canon.
What other creatures? Boldogs are another one I consider canon. The Eagles already exist obviously, but what Morgoth did to them I count as canon too. I'm curious about others.
