My first issue is with Cloud's characterization. Oh boy, oh boy, do I hate his characterization in this film. Why? Because it completely disregards his entire character development in the original game. All that stuff he learned about letting go of the past and looking to the future? Completely forgotten, as Cloud is turned into a complete mockery of his original character. Not only that, but he's even worse than before. In FFVII, he still had his problems, but he was still the outgoing guy with a dry wit. He pretty much loses all this and becomes a completely flat and generic angst-machine who's completely miserable and super serious throughout the whole thing.

Sephiroth. Does it even explain why he comes back to life for some reason? Because quite frankly, I seriously think they just threw him in for the sake of appeasing his fans. But to be quite honest, I'm not too bothered by this like everything else because that out-of-nowhere fight scene between him and Cloud was undoubtedly the best part of the movie anyway. Provided, It made no sense in the terms of the actual plot, but it looked cool. 

The three remnants? They had no actual character to them whatsoever, except for pretty much being chock full of super clichéd tropes. They're supposed to be fragments of Sephiroth? Cool, cool. I'll pretend that makes any sense whatsoever. Forget characterization though, because these people are surely gonna get killed off anyway!

Oh man, the old team, huh? With the exception of Tifa and Vincent, you hardly see anything of the actual main characters. For example, let's take Barret. What relevance does Barret actually have in this movie? His amount of screen time is probably less than two minutes, tops. What about Red XIII? He was a fundamental part of the game, but he gets shafted completely, with the exception of one fucking line right at the end. They all appear at the end, but considering their entire absence throughout the rest of the film, their actual appearance makes it look as if they were just shoved right in there for the sake of being there.

Reno and the Turks. Originally cold blooded killing machines... now canon fodder and pointless comic relief. Tseng and Elena? One would say that they were spared by being put offscreen for most of the film. Same goes for the rest of the shafted characters.
