Heater at my house is broken so I've brought home some pcs from work and set them in each bedroom and they're just running BOINC science simulations for various universities to assist in heating. If I'm paying for electricity to heat my room my pc might as well fold some proteins.

I used to do distributed computing projects using BOINC for these exceptional people
I remember ThEfT, Cori, DoctorNow, RayB, Ceibon, and Uwe. I know Uwe has already left us, sadly. I wonder how they all are doing as it was nearly 20 years back.
They made me feel like I belonged, which at that time did not happen often. I sincerely hope they are doing well.
decided to add some malicious link block list to my router and then immediately it started spamming me with blocked connections notifications. I've been trying all day trying to figure out why my work pc keeps trying to connect to all these suspicious addresses.
There's another pc on the network that is also, in tandem, making the same connection attempts.
The current hypothesis is that it's Boinc, a program that allows universities to use my computer to run science calculations. I volunteer my pcs downtime to a few programs. I've closed the program. Let's see if my computer stops trying to connect and the other pc continues (it still has boinc running)

With my fans sounding like they're readying for liftoff again, I can't help but be reminded of one weirdo I saw a post from on either Lemmy or Reddit a while back--who did have a spare PC set up mining crypto to double as a space heater for his living room one winter. (He seemed to think that his whole little experiment worked out well, too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
But, I am doing this shit on my gaming laptop strictly part time--FOR SCIENCE! 😹 May as well get some hopefully beneficial use out of that GPU and otherwise overpowered hardware when I'm not actively using it for much myself. Though I will sometimes set things like bread dough or culturing kefir jars behind the vents to take advantage of the waste heat. Good place to soften butter quicker too!
And thankfully most jobs do NOT run temperatures up into the 90s--which are actually pretty normal temps for a Legion laptop with the GPU running hard. Still a little concerning in terms of component longevity, and I will give it breaks when the fans have been going this hard for a while. (Why that one project is showing as suspended atm. This one is getting one more job before I pause it too.)
Yeah, BOINC is pretty much the successor to SETI@home, which I was running 20+ years ago on much shittier hardware. (Then there's Folding@home, which is evidently still going.) Only it's a platform that a bunch of different research organizations can distribute their projects through. Pretty cool stuff, and I do recommend checking it out if you haven't already.

apparently, since the passing of Prof. Krzysztof Belczynski in January no one has been able to take up the mantle and the remaining people (person?) running the project doesn't know enough to keep it going.
