So No Man’s Sky had a nice new update in the form of Origins, so I had to try it out. I wanted to see if the worlds I knew got anything new. And boy, did they. Massive alien structures, new creatures and plants and stuff. Derelicts and wrecks everywhere in space (one system, I found three on my journey between two worlds).
Some things stood out. Let me explain.
Pic 1: Child of Helios Jellyfish. I was warping between two worlds when I got a ping on the ‘hey there’s something interesting here’ sensors. So I stopped warping and this absolutely lovely Jelly drifted past me. I carefully maneuvered close, and it opened communications with me... of a sort. The thing can’t speak, but it apparently is capable of psychic impression, so it pushed a bunch of happy thoughts and emotions on my character, as well as its love for the universe. Most delightful thing I’ve found so far.
Pic 2: This thing has a really long name, but I can’t change it. Not because I didn’t discover it; it’s marked as an Extinct Animal in the logs. It’s not supposed to be alive. Guess someone needs to tell out that, as well as the 5 others I saw in the immediate area.
For all their scary appearance, they’re actually remarkably peaceful and gentle...but they do eat meat, because that one was munching a deer-thing a moment before I took the pic. I think it fakes looking like a rock with mushrooms to draw in prey, judging from that nosepiece.
Pic 3: Okay what the actual fuck. I needed some Ferrite, so I mined a typical rock near my base. The rock exploded (as they do), but the rock behind it bounced up into the air and rolled over. I thought it was just a new physics thing....until it sprouted SIX SPIDER LEGS and tried to scurry the hell away from me. I only got that one snapshot because it ran so fast and I could only get the camera deployed so fast.
It was an unscannable creature. It didn’t even show up as a rock or an animal. It was like scanning the ground. I don’t know what it was but it scared the hell outta me.
Side note: I’ve now discovered that my beloved nightmare world Boiling Hell Prime has a second world I didn’t see past all my screaming. It was a warm, wet world with a weather type called “Damp Misery”, and was populated by mushrooms and ugly trees, and really quick land-squid digger things that burrowed through the mud.
So I called it “Misery”. It was fitting. I might build a base there just because it’s SLIGHTLY more tolerable than Boiling Hell Prime.
