(dividers from @uzmacchiato)
Jackson was dead. A man, no a boy, that was barely able to buy his own beer, was dead. A boy, who would never get to experience the world without war. A boy who never got the chance to have a family of his own. He was dead. Right before his friend’s eyes. Laura turned away from the still body sprawled on the stretcher, unable to bear the state of the boys mangled corpse, forever frozen in a state of hysteria. Silence settled in the atmosphere, yet, it spoke louder than any artillery she’d heard. They were tired. Exhausted. Jackson was just another casualty in the war, however, this felt heavier. Maybe it was his youth, or the fact he begged the lord above for his life, or maybe he was just the tip of the iceberg that caused the ship to sink with everyone aboard it. Whatever it was, it ripped whatever was left of the men, and woman, and layed it to rest with young jackson.
Laura perched on a rock, not too uncomfortable, not like she’d have noticed anyway. Distant sounds of artillery shattered the crisp twilight air, it was oddly comforting, with the aggressive fire being so far yet so close. Oh well it wasn’t her, she thought, but maybe it should be. At this point, she imagined death so much it felt like a memory, not a painful memory either, but rather one that called to her, offering a chance at endless freedom and peace. That was all Laura wanted, just peace. No fighting, no war, just peace.
She imagined herself sat on some wooden porch steps back home, reading a poetic book, while the sound of children’s laughter swept through the summer time air, a husband teaching their son to play baseball, while their daughter hung from his back with innocent laughter. is that what death would be like? A familiar face flashed in her mind. Christensen. Why was he the face she imagined when imagining endless peace? Laura always knew she had a certain feeling for him, but she never had the chance to dwell on what that feeling was. She quite enjoyed imagining a life with him, she figured, so she left herself carry on. Him swinging their two children around, one on each arm, her reading her book. What a life. She knew it was never meant to be, but she let herself immerse for a while anyway. Well, until a gentle tap on her shoulder broke her from her thoughts.
“hey,” a gentle yet gruff voice spoke, “i heard about Jackson, i’m sorry.” Pat, of all people, decided to show up. Wow, she thought, life really did have a way of reminding her what she couldn’t have. Pat sat himself next to her, gently and carefully, fearing if he moved too quick, he may break her. Laura sighed, “not your fault.” she returned numbly, keeping her eyes forward, not daring to turn and look at him, he couldn’t see her this way. “i know.” the soldier replied breathily. A quiet settled over the two, not uncomfortable nor comfortable, just something in between. Pat knew if she needed to talk she would, but for the time being, he’d be there anyway, Laura talking or not.
“He was begging for his life.” She revealed, voice shaking. “He was begging God to spare him, he was just a kid.” A watery, sarcastic laugh escaping her throat. “This fuckin’ war.” Pat muttered, breathing through his nose, shaking his head with bitterness. Laura noticed a pain in his voice, understanding filled her, she knew this pain, she didn’t know anyone else did. Maybe she wasn’t alone. So, for the first time since he sat down, Laura craned her neck toward him. He was staring ahead, not a single thought seeming to occupy his mind. Sensing her gaze, he turned to look at her. As their eyes met, an understanding look bounced between them. Unspoken words locked deep down, threatened to spill over. His eyes bore into hers, begging her to ask for the help she needed. Then, she cracked. Her eyes glistened as her lip quivered. Silent tears rolled down her face with ease, each one a remembrance to the friends she’d lost. Soon enough, like the flip of a switch, audible gasps wracked her body, each coming out in short, broken periods.
Like it was primitive instinct, Christensen reached a soft arm around her, pulling her closer. This time, she didn’t hold back, and instead let her worn hands grip his rugged jacket like a lifeline. “i should’ve done something, anything, ” she sobbed, “it should’ve been me!” teeth gritting. “Hey,” Pat removed his arm from around her shoulder, his determined hands cupping each side of her face, “this is NOT your fault, it’s nobody’s fault except those fuckin’ krauts, Jackson wouldn’t want you wishing your life away in his place, he wasn’t that type of person, you know that aswell as i do, he wouldn’t want you blaming yourself!” his honest eyes bore into Laura’s, every fibre of his being aching, like he could almost feel the exact thing she was feeling. Laura leant her face into his hand, “i can’t feel anything, Pat.”
A look of internal fighting crossed his eyes, but as quick as it showed, it was quicker gone. And in a moment of spontaneity, he pressed his lips to hers. On instinct, Laura’s eyes pressed closed. Was this a dream? A coldness hovered on her lips, where his had just been. Leaning forward, she pressed their foreheads together, his grip on her face never faltering. Heavy breathing standing its ground between them, his hot breath fanning on her face reminding her this was real. “Did you feel that?” he desperately whispered, a hint of a hopefulness laced his voice. “I felt it.” She breathed, disbelief wrapped in her tone. As she leaned in again, Laura heard the words she never thought she’d hear. “i love you.” he uttered in an uncertain murmur, but Laura knew she’d heard it right, and she was certain, “i love you too.”
The words hung in the air, both Pat and Laura relished in the soft hum of wind, that seemed to have grown warm. Almost simultaneously, the two let out breathy laughs, as they revelled in the rare moment of peace. In that tranquil moment, Laura finally took the time to realise what those feelings for Pat were exactly, instantly recognising the feeling of warmth and care, she realised it really was love. At that moment, with their heads touching, Laura realised that maybe this war wouldn’t be so bad, as long as she had her Pat by her side.
EVEN IN THE SILENCE…
chapter one - honour from altitude
song: the chain by fleetwood mac
June 5th 1944
I tossed the air-sickness pill to the back of my throat, swallowing it instantly. Tucking the other pill for in-flight into the breast pocket of my uniform, i waited patiently for Winters to pull me up. He was getting closer- almost reaching me. First went Teresa, Winters giving her a reassuring smile, Teresa returning the gesture with a thankful nod. Then came me. Winters’ gloved hand slipped into mine, yanking me up with gentle ease. “Good luck.” I whispered, “You too.” he returned, nodding me toward the plane. Taking a deep breath, I stepped toward the door…
early hours of June 6th
The night was quiet. No man dared speak a loud word. All that could be heard was the ricketing of the big tin can. Some soldiers thought silent prayers, clasping their rosary’s in their hand, while others whispered them aloud, soft “amens” being bounced around the plane every so often. If the men weren’t praying, they were fidgeting, messing with whatever they could get their hands on; lighters, pictures, anything really, some even nervously tapping at their knees or gear. I was among those few that were doing nothing but gazing, awaiting our orders to jump. Chuck sat across from me, it looked as though he was staring at me, but i knew he wasn’t, he was looking through me, eyes empty, but head full. The same as me.
I felt a slight erratic movement next to me, the quick yet small movement of an arm and leg bouncing rubbing against my arm. Teresa. I looked at her, sensing my gaze, she turned her head to mine. “We’ll be okay,” i muttered “just remember our training.” She bobbed her head, nodding slightly. I was nervous, probably just as much as her, but i knew she needed my comfort. Sliding my palm into hers, we interlocked fingers, as i gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. I wouldn’t lie, the simple gesture brought my own self some comfort too, the feeling of familiarity bringing my nerves down slightly. We had eachother.
—————
The plane soon flew into Normandy. The deafening sound of artillery and flak split through the air immediately. Not waiting for anyone to prepare, the plane shook viciously, throwing soldiers side to side as they fought to stabilise themselves, the attempt in vain though, as the large piece of tin carried on rocking relentlessly, even knocking soldiers to the ground. We all held onto eachother to avoid being thrown across the plane, my hand never leaving Teresa’s. Well, until Winters’ ordered us all to stand, the green flicker of the indicator making itself known. Bracing ourselves, me, Teresa, and most other soldiers gripped the clip in line above us, using it as support.
“Equipment check!” Winters shouted, hoping his men could hear him over the ruckus. We each clipped our parachute bags to the line above us, securing them in place.
“Twelve okay!”
“Eleven okay!”
“Ten okay!”
The shouts were getting closer, indicating it was almost my turn. I felt Teresa checking my equipment before a, “Three okay!” was heard. Ensuring Popeye’s equipment was secure and not faulty, I let Winters know, “Two okay!”
One every man had checked their equipment, it was time.
“Okay go, go!” Winters shouted assertively.
As the line shortened, my anxiety increased. Why did i have to put myself so close to the front?! Teresa gave me a comforting tap on my shoulder when my turn approached. There was no time for bad thoughts. Just do it. I thought to myself. So i did.
Taking a leap, gravity’s heavy weight pulled me down with force. Gravity will do the rest. With a screech, i deployed my parachute, the freezing air whipping my face. ouch. I felt myself being yanked back by the parachute catching wind, my fall slowed. However, the ground was still fast approaching, i could make out the dark patches of grass stretched out across the land. Despite the night sky still being evident, it was light, the twilight being lit up by explosions, fire spanned across the scene. It was quite pretty really.
Soon enough, i was on the ground, the weight of my gear instantaneously yanked me right to the floor. Face planting the wet grass, i groaned. “God damn!” i did it. But there was no time to think. I had to move. Grabbing my knife from my gear, i cut the rope that attached my parachute to me.
I dragged myself up, struggling, our 180lb worth of equipment didn’t exactly help. Finally standing, i took a scan, no sign of Teresa. She’ll be okay, she’s tough. I gotta keep moving.
With that, i took off running into the forest, lugging my heavy baggage with me.
The forest was thick and dense, covering the sound and visual of the brawl happening in the sky, although the sound of gunfire and explosions could be slightly heard, the wind carrying it through the forest.
My legs were aching. My uniform was caked in mud and whatever else had polluted the dirty ground. My feet were becoming numb. I didn’t know how long i’d been walking for… Maybe an hour? two? or even a full day, the sky still having a tint of dark debunked that theory though- i couldn’t have been walking for more than six hours.
The forest was now silent, the chaos from above ending a while ago. There was no sign of anyone. How could that be, when so many of us had jumped? Was everybody dead? Surely not, i shook my head at myself, noting how stupid those thoughts were. I hope Terry’s okay. I’m sure Chuck’s with her. The two were quite the pair. The way they’d smile wistfully at each-other from across the room, when they thought nobody was looking. But i was. Every time i’d question Teresa about it, she’d shrug it off as a little. I knew her better than that though, I am her bestfriend. I know Chuck better than that too, they loved eachother. Cute.
My thoughts soon wandered to someone. Shifty. God i hoped he was okay. A tight feeling crawled in my heart. He better be okay. I hadn’t realised, but my teeth were clenched tightly, just at thought he was hurt. I thought a silent prayer for him in my head, then one for Teresa, then Chuck, and then a collective one for the rest of the men.
Crunch.
Pulling me from my thoughts, a branch snapping could be heard. I quickly ducked from my exposed position, taking refuge between two bushes, giving me coverage. Was it someone from easy? or was it a kraut?
“flash!” a whispered shout came from beside me.
“thunder!” I returned with speed, almost giving myself whiplash, i pivoted to the side, taking a look at who was there.
Shifty.
Wow, God really does have great timing.
Releasing a breath i was unaware i was holding, i quickly moved towards him, the ache of my bones suddenly disappearing.
A bright, relieved smile spread across his face.
“Rue, you’re alright!” he gasped, “I’m so glad to see you.” he smirked sweetly.
“I could say the same to you.” I responded, now stepping fully infront of him, a breathy smile on my face.
“You seen anybody else?” he questioned gently.
“No, you’re the first familiar face i saw.”
“Yeah i ain’t spotted nobody either.”
Pursing my lips, i decided we should probably carry on moving.
———
It had been about an hour or so, Shifty thankfully had a watch that hadn’t been broken in the fall, which told us it was 8:34AM. We’d jumped about 6 hours ago. Surely we’d find the others soon, hopefully. Pushing those thoughts from my head, i focused on the man walking beside me, taking in his appearance. He’s handsome. I thought, noting his sharp jawline and dark olive skin.
“You alright?” he asked with a soft smile. I moved my face down in a flash, my face warming. “Yea’, just watchin’ out, ya know.” acting confident, i pleaded to the lord that he wouldn’t notice my blush. He hummed softly.
Our shoulders brushed together every so often, each time making a little giddy. What is wrong with me? I needed to focus. I’ll start small talk. I don’t know why i was nervous, i’d talked to Shifty plenty of times before, we were actually rather close, what’s changed?
“So, you think resta’ E. made it in one piece?” My voice was low and hopeful.
Shifty glanced over at me, his face adorning streaks of dirt and sweat. I doubt i looked any better.
“I dunno’, I did see a few chutes catch fire on the way down, and i did see quite a few dead bodies littered ‘round,” he expressed with a sad look. “but E.’s the toughest company there is, i’m sure most of them’ll be okay, and i’m sure Terry’s okay, she’s one of the toughest altogether.” He must’ve known what i was thinking.
“Yeah she is.” I huffed out a laugh.
“So are you.” He said.
I looked up at him- is he mocking me?
“Yeah right, thanks Shift.” i scoffed.
“I’m serious.”
Glancing in his eyes, i knew he wasn’t lying, he never was one to lie anyway.
“Ha, well i may be tough, but you’re the best damn sharp shooter i ever did see.” I explained with a pointed look.
“Oh no, not me, but my dad,” he raised his eyebrows at me, “he’s the best shooter i ever seen, could shoot from miles off.”
“Ahh, humble as ever Shifty.” I teased.
He shook his head with a laugh.
“You know, i didn’t think i was gonna find anyone, i thought everybody was dead, I even prayed for you, Teresa, Chuck and the rest of the man, seems it worked.” I revealed, a sinking feeling nuzzled in my chest and stomach, noting that we still hadn’t found Terry or Chuck, or anyone for that matter. “I even started talking to the trees at one point.” I tried to lighten my previously sour mood.
“Well it seems your prayers worked- and that about trees? don’t tell anyone, but me too.” Shifty whispered like it was a top secret.
I giggled like a silly schoolgirl, he always did know how to lighten a mood.
Shifty suddenly halted, bringing a finger on his lips, letting me know to be quiet. We both crouched behind a fallen tree. Shifty swung his sniper from his back, placing it infront of him.
“Well i’ll be damned.” he grinned.
“What?” i was confused.
“Well if it ain’t Shift and Trigg.”
My head whipped around for the second time that day, i gasped.
Infront of me stood a dirtied Grant and Terry.
“oh my god!” I squealed, bolting out of my squatted position, rushing forward toward the pair.
“Terry, Chuck!” i whisper-shouted, launching my arms around Teresa, instantly relaxing, my spirits reaching the sky’s limit. I locked her in an iron grip, both of us gripping eachother tightly. “You’re okay!” I grinned. “Of course i am!” she smirked back. Pulling away from the embrace, but keeping our hands on eachothers arms, we noticed Shifty and Chuck embrace in a quick, manly hug, the close friends chuckling. A physical weight felt as though it had been lifted from my chest.
“Have you guys seen anybody?” I asked the pair.
“No not us, so far it’s just you guys we’ve seen.” Teresa replied, a hint of dejectedness laced in her voice.
“Hey it’s okay, we’ll find them.” Chuck comforted her, placing a hand on her back.
Me and Shifty glanced at eachother knowingly, noticing how she suddenly relaxed into his touch.
“Well let’s get moving.” Shifty ordered, falling into step with me, giving me a reassuring smile, to which i smiled back at.
After walking in silence for another hour, despite the muffled conversation coming from the pair behind us, me and Shifty noticed something. A clearing. The end of the forest.
“Hey you guys!” I looked over my shoulder, Terry and Chuck halting there conversation.
“The end of the forest!” Shifty finished for me.
“Finally…” Teresa sighed.
When the other two caught up to us, our little group moved in unison toward the brightened area, still holding our rifles incase anything decided to try harm us.
Reaching the clearing, we halted, scoping out the area. I noticed some smoke. Looking closer at the sight, i saw a dismantled plane. Some poor bastards were on that. The sight was of one that nobody could survive.
The others must’ve noticed it too as i heard Grant let out a faint “check that out.”
Stalking closer, i noticed a small group of people, consisting of around 3-4 people.
“Shifty us or them?”
“I see Tab!” he exclaimed excitedly.
In a rush, our small group began to walk toward theirs. Coming closer, i noticed the group contained Tab, Smokey and Blithe. Thank you Lord.
We got closer, waiting for them to notice us. They didn’t, they were too caught up in a conversation of their own. They have the survival instincts of a wet flannel. Well, except Blithe- he was staring ahead into space, he looked exhausted. Sweet Blithe. The sweetest boy i knew, aside from Shifty of course, he was always quiet, kept to himself, but his presence was always comforting, like he understood you without you or him having to say anything. Even though he didn’t talk much, i knew all the boys loved him, as did me and Terry. When he did speak to me, it was nice; it was a contrast from what he was usually like… When he held a proper conversation with you, it was always a good time.
Alas, Smokey looked up, eyebrows raised as he caught us walking toward them. “Hey guys!” he shouted, making the other two boys look toward us, Blithe being broken out of his stare. I smiled at them all, specifically Blithe, god knows he needed it, he looked exhausted, more so than the rest of us. Mentally exhausted.
A scattered chorus of hey’s were passed between us all, happy to finally see more people, maybe they aren’t all dead after all.
Pacing toward Blithe, i held a sympathetic look on my face, a lopsided grin adorning it.
“Hey buddy.” I greeted.
“Hey trigg.” He replied, harbouring a vacant expression.
“How ya’ doin’, your drop go alright?” I gently interrogated.
“Yeah, yours?” he bluntly answered
“Well i’m alive, so i’d say it went fine.” I joked.
“Yeah.” he ever so slightly smiled, but just as quick as it was there, it was gone, i knew what had happened. He was here physically, but his mind was elsewhere. Maybe it was still in the clouds, maybe he was still free falling from the plane. Whatever it was, i knew i felt bad for the man boy.
With more hope than before, our group, that now consisted of 7 easy members, set off to find the rest of our company. We were close, i could feel it.
After another while walking, we finally stumbled upon a large amount of soldiers, scattered from different companies. There must’ve been atleast 50-60. Oh how relieved i was.
Surging forward, myself and Shifty, again walking side by side, led our small group toward the other soldiers.
Each of us asked around, interrogating different companies about the whereabouts of ours, until finally, we were pointed in the direction E. company should’ve been.
After searching in said direction, we finally caught sight of easy company, and most of them too, thankfully. Seeing so many familiar faces caused a wave of relief to flow through my body, my emotional and physical weight feeling lighter despite the heavy gear i was carrying.
“Well look who finally decided to show up!” the unmistakable boom of George’s voice came from ahead of us. Throwing his arm around Floyd’s shoulder, Lieb and Hoob ran over with a few other men too, excited chatter easing through the reunited group, a sense of happiness settled around us all.
“About time.” I leaned to Shifty.
“You’re telling me.” He leaned back.
I observed as Blithe stalked over to Perco and Dukemann, slotting himself next to Frank. His eyes still vast, cast at the view infront of him.
I hope he’ll get through this.

EVEN IN THE SILENCE…
chapter two - what we almost lost
song: beautiful boy by john lennon “before you cross the street, take my hand, life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”
june 10th 1944
“Let’s go first platoon!” Welshy shouted.
Well i guess the peace doesn’t last for long then. The group we were in began to disperse, those in first platoon waking toward Harry.
“Easy’s moving out— on your feet!” Harry shouted again, forcing the other platoons up.
Me and Shifty walked toward the lieutenant with Luz and Tab, us getting there first, earning a place right infront of Harry.
“Yeah yeah, we heard you Welshy.” I smirked as Shifty huffed a laugh next to me.
“Oh hush it Trigg.” His short laugh betraying his stern look.
Once all the men had gathered round, the lieutenant addressed us all.
“Listen up! It’ll be dark soon- i want light and noise discipline from here on!” That was his first order, “No talking, no smoking,” I internally groaned at that, “and no playing grab fanny with the man infronna’ ya’ Luz!” All the men laughed at that.
“So where we headed to lieutenant, huh?” a soldier asked, squinting at the bright sun.
Good question, where are we going?
“We’re taking Carentan.” Harry answered, looking up from his gear.
“Well that sounds like fun!” The same private who’d asked him where we were going said.
Me and Shifty both laughed at that, yeah i bet this is gonna be the time of our lives.
Clearly noting the sarcasm dripping from the privates voice, Lt. Welsh expanded further, “It’s the only place where armor from Omaha and Utah beach can link up and head inland, until we take Carentan they’re stuck on the sand.”
Ah makes sense, of course they want us to take Carentan.
“General Taylor’s sending the whole division.” Harry added.
Nevermind, not just us.
George scoffed next to me, then pursed his lips.
Here we go.
“Remember boysss, give me three days and three nights of hard fightin’ and you will be relieved.” George finished, mocking the general.
A chorus of “Yeah”s were heard through the men, almost giggling.
I looked up at George, “I like that one, it was good.”
“Oh yeah? you liked it?” George questioned, proud of him self.
“Yeah i did.”
“Thanks ya little southern broad.” He rubbed my helmet against my hair.
Pushing his hand away, i giggled.
I felt Hoobler brush past my arm, “Lieutenant, i’ll take point.” Hoobler offered, that’s nice of him.
“Corporal Hoobler will be lead scout.” Welsh announced to the rest of the men.
“Blithe, glad you could join us.” the lieutenant smiled.
“Thank you sir.” Blithe replied meekly.
I turned and smiled at him, clapping his shoulder. He moved his head down to look at me as he smiled back. That same vacant look in his eyes still there, just hidden behind a mask. But i knew it was there.
“You people from second and third platoon, follow us!”
Breaking my eye contact with Blithe, I moved closer to Shifty and Terry, the three of us falling into step with eachother as we began our march.
“And the thing to remember boys, flies spread disease, so keep yours closed!” George mimicked the general once again.
This time a wave of roaring laughter sounded through the men.
“Come on Luz!”
— — —
It was night time now, we’d been walking for a good while. The air was filled with suffocating smoke, the stench of burning bodies stretched through the men, as flames planted themselves around us, some even sitting on top of the water.
“God, it stinks!” I complained, holding a handkerchief to my nose, attempting to keep the smell out.
“Yeah, don’t i know it.” Terry replied, scrunching her face up in disgust, also holding a piece of cloth to her face.
Shifty just laughed as he stood beside me.
The odd crack of artillery could be heard in the distance.
“Don’t wake Jerry.” Hoob warned as he stepped over a dead kraut, Harry following, Skinny next, and then me, Terry and Shifty, the dead man’s hand brushing Terry’s leg as we stepped over him.
“Disgusting.” she whispered as i laughed next to her.
Turning back, i noticed Perco lean down and take a watch of the corpse.
“Eugh, Perco! What the hell are ya’ doin’? Ya’ gonna give yourself a disease!” I exclaimed loudly, my disgust evident.
He just flipped me off as he stepped forward, holding the watch to his ear.
Moving my head forward again, i saw we came to a halt.
“Damn.” I heard Hoobler say.
“What?” Harry asked, stepping beside the man.
“We lost F company, sir.”
“Again?” Harry sighed, pushing past Hoobler, trying to find F.
“You gotta’ be kiddin’ me!” Teresa shook her head in disbelief.
“What’s that, four times now?” I asked rhetorically.
“Yep!” Skinny turned to us, joining our conversation.
“Hmm.” Shifty hummed in agreement.
Perconte and Blithe pushed past the three of us, walking to Hoobler.
“We lost F company.” Hoob said, exasperated.
“Wh- Again?!” Perco uttered.
“Hey Blithe, Skinny, guess what?” He turned to tell the two men behind him.
“Perconte, go back and pass the word to hold up.” Welsh ordered as he returned, clearly seeing no sign of the lost company.
“Yes sir.” Brushing past us again, Frank moved down the line.
“Hoobler, take Blithe, go find F company.” He ordered again, this time to the two men infront of him.
“Yes sir,” Hoob said as hebegan walking ahead, “come on Blithe!” he shouted, causing Blithe to trail behind him.
“So what do we do?” I asked.
“Just wait here, keep an eye out.” Harry said.
“Yes sir.” I rolled my eyes and began to sit down, Skinny, Terry and Shifty following in suit, the four of us forming a circle.
I heard footsteps crunching against the ground, looking up i saw Winters and Nixon marching to Welsh.
“Did you send somebody?” Dick questioned authoritatively.
“Yeah i got Hoobler and Blithe out there now.” Harry let out a breath from his nose, clearly agitated.
“Why’ve we stopped?” Nix questioned.
“This is about officers crapping out of their training Nix,” Winters answered, “come on let’s get this show on the road.”
“God damnit!” Skinny whispered.
I slapped my neck as i felt a buzz by it, fuckin’ mosquitos. The air was stuffy and warm, full with the stench of dead bodies, so of course, fly’s and mosquitos were all around, terrorising us all.
We all stood up and began following lieutenant Welsh once more.
— — —
As we approached the town of Carentan, it was quiet, eerily quiet, with the exception of metal breaking and birds singing.
The sun beamed down on us all as we lay flat in the grass ditches beside the gravel entrance. We were watching, waiting for any sign of movement, of krauts. There were none.
“God this heat is killin’ me!” I grumbled, squinting at the harsh rays.
“Yeah i can tell, i can smell ya!” Terry said, shoving my shoulder.
“Wait that’s me? i coulda’ sworn it was you.” I fired back.
Shifty laughed at our friendly fire.
“This is gettin’ boring.” Shifty moaned quietly.
“Yeah, you’re telling me.” I replied, taking another look through my sniper at the town, scoping the area for any sign of soldiers.
Still nothing, it was like a ghost town, with nothing but whispers stuck in the wind from the people that once called the town home.
As i looked up, i noticed Winters peeking over the slight hill, before crawling back down.
Is he going to give us orders?
He looked down at his watch as rows of soldiers waited, itching to get this over with already. We were sick of waiting, doing nothing.
I then saw Dick lean over to Harry and whisper something as he nodded. Welsh then turned to us, his platoon.
“First platoon let’s go, let’s go!” he quietly ordered.
Finally.
Immediately standing, we all ran in a crouching position, attempting to keep ourselves hidden for a few seconds longer.
We ran, Me, Shifty and Teresa, all in a line, rushing to the seemingly empty town.
In an instant, bullets were pouring down on us, the sound of them whizzing split through the air.
A soldier fell to the ground infront of us, he was dead.
“In the ditch! Down, Down!” A cry was heard as i felt an arm tug my uniform harshly, yanking me back down in the ditch, i came face to face with Shifty.
“Where the fuck did they come from?!” I shouted over the army of bullets.
“No idea!” Shifty shouted back.
Bullets were everywhere, lead spraying across the scene.
Teresa.
“Where’s Teresa?” I cried.
“I don’t know.” Shifty yelled.
Oh shit.
Trying to get a look at the town infront of me, I detected Terry, she was taking cover behind a white house, broken, but it sheltered her from the hail of bullets. She wasn’t alone though, Harry and George stood next to her, with George pushing his gun around the corner of the building, aimlessly firing at the array of buildings stretched infront of them.
Thank god.
My heart raced, what the hell had just happened?
“Let’s go Easy!” someone vocalised, i couldn’t tell who, probably Winters.
“Get those MG’s moving will ya!” Lieutenant Col. Strayer demanded.
“Move out now!”
Me and Shifty shared a look; we’re doomed.
With a deep breath, i dragged myself up again, Shifty mirroring my actions.
A group of us, lead by Lipton, moved through the side, barging our way through a group of bushes.
We’d go around, rather than directly forward.
Me and Shifty ran ahead first, the other men following. Coming up to a gate, he burst through the gate, the wooden stopper flying right open.
We’d have to split up.
Shifty ran to take cover behind a wall, a chicken coop behind him, as i moved opposite him, behind a rather intact house, the one where George, Welsh and Terry were hiding behind.
Another soldier followed closely behind us, but got shot before he could even decide to take cover.
Shifty looked over to me, his eyes asking if i was okay. I nodded.
I peeped around the corner, spotting a soldier standing behind the same wall as me, but further down.
Then came the rest of the men, Lip at the front.
Lipton lead the men behind yet another broken building, before swinging his rifle round and firing at the open windows infront of him, but he didn’t hit anything, none of us could see where the shots were coming from, smoke covering the whole town.
The private infront of me launched his grenade toward one of the windows, attempting to take out whoever was inside, but instead, the grenade bounced of the wall and rolled, exploding with a fierce bang.
“Oh shit!” I heard George shout.
Oh god, are they okay?
Before i could try take a look at the small group, more shots were fired, dragging my attention away. When i looked back, I saw the grenade thrower on the floor, dead.
“Jesus christ!” I hissed at myself, before swinging my sniper round, moving to where the private once stood, trying to see through the thick smoke.
Wiping my sniper lens, i looked straight forward, my eyes being greeted by a German sniper laid above us on a metal platform.
Taking aim, I shot him, his body dropping instantly to the cold metal floor.
“Shifty over there!” I pointed to the building infront of mine, seeing ricochets flying through.
Lifting his sniper, he aimed the window, squinting his right eye to get a better look.
Bang.
I heard the shell from his single bullet drop to the floor.
Moving my head cautiously around the corner once more, i caught sight of the end of a machine gun turning Shifty’s way.
“Shifty!” I alerted, but as soon as the words left my mouth, the deafening crack of MG fire bounced through the air as bullets zipped mercilessly toward the wall Shifty was behind.
I saw Shifty move his back against the wall, before debris flew, a dust cloud covering the place he stood.
“Shifty!” I screeched, aiming my gun toward the window.
I took a shot, yet the gunman remained where he was, still firing. I missed. God damnit.
With shaky hands, i aimed once more, this time taking a large breath, focusing myself.
Ping.
The MG fire stopped instantaneously, the shine of the man’s helmet dropping to the floor.
I got him.
I ran as fast as i could to Shifty’s wall, needing him to be alive.
As i reached the battered segment, I saw a disheveled Shifty looking back at me, his helmet halfway off his head, messing his hair up.
“Are you okay?” I asked breathlessly, he looked terrified.
“Yeah.” He replied just as breathless, seemingly trying to convince both me and himself that he was okay.
Nodding, I held my rifle infront of me, scoping around the corner.
I saw Lip and his group running toward us now that we had taken the German gunman out.
The men spread out, firing at each window.
Perco and Lip ran toward us before Lip tripped over something, causing both him and Frank to tumble down, Frank landing on top of Lipton.
“You okay guys?” Lip yelled to us.
“Yeah!” I answered as Shifty held his thumb up.
“We gotta take that warehouse!” Lip ordered as Frank rolled off him, the two men getting up and running.
“Shifty, Trigg,” He beckoned us over, “Aim for those windows.”
Slinging our rifles around, we both began shooting at the windows, allowing Lipton to run up the metal stairs.
“I need to look for Terry!”
“Come on!”
Me and Shifty began running through the streets, aimlessly but alert.
Blasts could be heard all around, surrounding us from every angle, some were shots, some were grenades, and some were machine guns.
Parts of the town were airborne, flinging around, catching soldiers like a game of tag.
“There she is!” Shifty shouted.
Looking around, I saw Teresa crouched behind a wall, talking to someone.
I moved quickly in her direction, staying close to the buildings incase i needed to take cover. As we reached her, i saw Blithe sat before her.
“Hey!” I greeted, alerting her to mine and Shifty’s presence as she looked up.
“Hey Blithe,” I walked toward him slowly, Shifty following, “you okay?”
“I- I can’t see anything.” he whispered in a panicked voice.
I looked behind me at Shifty as he shrugged, before moving gaze to Terry, whose eyebrows were furrowed in concern.
“You’re gonna be okay Blithe.” I assured softly, not wishing to scare him.
“Let’s get you to a medic buddy.” Shifty suggested, crouching next to Blithe, giving him his hand to support the blonde man.
————
“Hey Trigg!” A voice called.
Turning, i saw Chuck walking towards me in a determined stride.
“Hey Chuck.” I greeted, standing from my position on the floor.
“You injured?” He asked, standing infront of me.
“Just a few scratches, i’m sure i’ll live.” I joked, “and you?”
“Nothing i can’t handle,” he replied, “Have you seen Ace?”
“I was with her just a few minutes ago, said she was going to scrounge some food, she had was thatta way.” I pointed to the direction Terry had gone just a few moments before.
“Great.” He nodded in thanks before walking off.
I didn’t know what to do with myself. Do i go find Shifty? Or do i go check on Blithe? In the end, i made the decision to visit Blithe in the aid station.
Picking up my bagged gear i made my way toward the aid station. Poor blithe, I thought. He didn’t deserve any of this, my heart ached for the boy; he had already been terrified after the big jump, with his blank stares piercing right through people, we had all told him he’d be okay, we didn’t want him to be scared— fear was poison in combat, both to the other soldiers and the soldier feeling it. But now Blithe sat in an aid station, unable to see nothing but darkness, his worst fears coming true. I hope he gets better.
As i reached the aid station, which was hardly an aid station and more of a torn up building with stretchers in, i walked through the entrance.
Standing at the doorway for a second, i looked around, attempting to find a blonde spot of hair. Moving my eyes around, they eventually stumbled upon the blind soldier crumpled on the floor, leaning against a board. Now there truly was nothing behind his eyes, he couldn’t see a thing, he just stared blankly ahead.
I made sure to shuffle carefully toward him, i didn’t want to scare him, not when he’s in such a state.
“Blithe.” I kneeled down while whispering his name.
His head moved to each side, trying to head where the sound came from.
“I’m here.” I sympathetically frowned, putting my hand on his shoulder.
“What happened out there?” I questioned gently.
“I dunno, everything just went black.” he choked out.
“Oh blithe,” i sighed, stroking his head, “you’ll be okay, i promise, they’ll get you back to England in no time, then you’ll be home.”
“I didn’t wanna let anyone down Ruth.” He used my full name, and for some reason, that made my heart crack even more.
A tear rolled down my cheek, “You didn’t let nobody down Al, we’re all proud of you.”
Looking up i saw Winters walking toward us; giving Blithe’s hair one last stroke, i stood up and walked outside, the closing of the make-shift door cutting off the smell of antiseptic and panicked murmurs behind me.
“Hey Trigg.” the voice was soothing and calm like fresh honey on a sore throat, “You okay?”
I looked up to see Shifty, his helmet tucked under his arm and his rifle was slung over his back, his hair slightly disheveled.
My mouth opened, but nothing came out, instead my throat tightened, the sound of Blithe’s utterly broken voice replaying in my head. Before i could think, i shook my head, just enough for Shifty to know i wasn’t okay, and tears stung my eyes, my lips quivering.
Without hesitation, Shifty closed the space between us and wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into his chest. His warm presence opposed the chaos surrounding us, so much so that it broke through the little barrier i had left, causing my body to wrack with sobs as i gripped his jacket.
“Hey, you’re okay, you’re okay.” he murmured into my hair, pressing a soft kiss to the crown of my head, “Let it all out.”
I buried my face into his shoulder, the calming smell of cigarettes and smoke filling my nose. For a moment, just a moment, i forgot why i was crying. There was no Blithe. No war. Just us. For a moment, all that could be heard was Shifty’s rhythmic heartbeat against my ears. It was oddly comforting.
My harsh sobs eventually shifted to shaky breaths. I pulled in a deep breath, releasing it with a trembling sigh.
“I’m sorry.” I pulled away just slightly, still not letting go of him, afraid that if i did, i’d just break all over again.
“Don’t be, you should apologise for crying, especially to me.” Shifty said, his eyes steady on mine. He presented me with a small, reassuring smile, “You’re gonna be okay.”
I huffed a short laugh, “I don’t even know why i’m crying, it’s not like i’m the blind one.”
I pulled away, wiping my tears against my sleeves quickly, “God this is embarrassing.”
He shook his head, “No, it’s not embarrassing, you’re crying because you care, it takes a lot to be so empathetic.”
“Thanks, i really needed that Shift.” I said quietly, swallowing harshly.
Shifty nodded, almost shyly, but his soft gaze never left my face.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” now asking me, instead of telling me i’ll be okay.
“Yeah, i am,” i smiled, “thanks to you.”
A look flickered through his eyes for a second– something that seemed familiar– however, before i could speak again, a holler in the distance caught our attention, reminding us we still had a duty to complete, and we had no time for such comforting moments.
“Come on, we’re moving out!” Teresa and Chuck shouted us over.
Looking at eachother once more, we walked to the couple.
Teresa swung her arm around me in a joking manner, “You okay sweetie?”
“Yeah, you?”
“Oh i’m absolutely fantastic.” She replied sarcastically, with a cheeky smile.
“Oh well i’m glad one of us is!” I laughed back.
Tugging on the loose strands of my updo, Terry rushed forward to Welsh, to get orders once again.
———
We’d been walking for a while now, around 2 hours— my feet hardly ached however, beginning to become accustomed to the daily marches.
Light rain spat down, enough to dampen us slightly but not wet us completely, which i was thankful for. Humidity began to trap in the air, the sun still beaming, causing the rain to reflect a rainbow colour across the canvas of open field.
I was trudging my way through the half-swamp, dragging myself through the muck and dirt.
Blithe was back now, I had heard that soon after i left his sight was back, almost like magic. It really was strange, that a man could go blind and get his sight back within the next few hours; only to act like nothing had happened. Whatever the cause of his vision coming back was, i was just happy it did return, i was sure it would’ve ruined him to stay blind forever.
“Luz, how far we goin’?” Frank’s fed up voice pulled me from my thoughts.
I laughed and shook my head at the short man, George knows just as much as the rest of us.
“Oh jesus christ Frank, i don’t know,” the brunette man replied, clearly just as fed up, “until they tell us to stop.” He glanced at him sideways.
“High ground,” Hoobler joined in the conversation, “there’s high ground up ahead.”
George turned to me and smiled, chuckling under his breath while i did the same.
“Okay genius, answer me this then: why is easy company the only company who’s either at the front of an advance,” Perco ranted, “or, like now, exposed at the far edge of the line.”
“Ya know, Perco’s right, it is always us.” I pointed out, looking between the three men.
“Thankyou Trigg.” Frank said, pointing at me and raising his eyebrows.
“To keep you on your toes.” Hoob joked back, although he held his serious expression.
“No! That’s not what i’m saying! I’m saying that we’re never in the middle, and we’re the fifth of nine companies in this regiment.”
He’s never gonna let this go.
“Able through Item, think of it-” he was cut off by Hoobler pointing ahead.
“See there, you see that-” it seemed Frank wasn’t the only one to be cut off.
There was a sudden burst of gunfire next to us, the ground starting to shake from the force.
Everything happened in a flash, one moment i was stood laughing with George at Frank’s antics, the next i was on the floor, crawling to a hedgerow next to Frank.
He turned to me, “See what i mean!” He shouted.
“Yeah i think so!” I shouted back.
Shots were being fired from the right, but it seemed like they were coming from every angle, i felt cornered. Desperate shouts and shelling were ringing through my ears, i could hear orders being shouted, but they travelled through one ear and went right out of the other.
I held my helmet atop my head, stopping it from becoming askew, my face pushed down to the dirt. Vicious vibrations flew through my body, and for some reason, i felt a wetness trickling down my face, i was crying.
Snap out of it. You’re okay.
“Get the hell up!” I felt a hand grab my arm, “We gotta move!”
Teresa.
Pulling me alongside her, we ran with the rest of the men, heading toward layers of bushes, trying to find the best cover we could.
Teresa pulled me down next to her, in a small ditch. With quick laboured breaths, i pulled my rifle from beside me, taking aim at the bushes firing at us.
I didn’t have time to cry. I didn’t have time to think. So i didn’t, instead i mercilessly shot ahead of me, i couldn’t see anything through the bushes, but i just hoped i had hit someone.
Taking a quick glance beside me, i noticed Blithe, clearly in a state of distress, just as i was– but he didn’t seem able to snap out of it, yet now i understood how he felt, why he stared blankly. He was scared. And so was i.
The relentless fire eventually ceased, not completely, but to only a few bullets every couple of minutes. It was dark by this point, we had been ordered to dig foxholes and take shelter for the night.
I sat in my hole, next to Terry; neither of us had spoken barely a word. I did nothing but shake, not from the cold air, but rather from fear. Multiple of my comrades had been shot right next to me as i crawled— what if it was me?
If it was me, i’d never get to see Terry again, or Shifty. I realised in that moment that i wasn’t worried about death itself, but rather what i’d miss out on. I wouldn’t get to live, to have my own family, to be Terry’s sister. Nothing.
“You okay?” Ace whispered, without looking at me.
“Yeah, you?”
“Yeah.”
We weren’t okay. We both knew that; but we couldn’t let our fear get the better of us, otherwise it would poison us, and then the rest of the men.
I was okay physically, and part-mentally, the mental part of me that was okay, was only because i knew Shifty was okay, i hadn’t personally seen him, but Floyd had told me he was okay and remained uninjured, which brought me a great amount of ease.
“I hope the rest of the guys are okay.” I muttered after a few minutes of silence, Terry knew what i meant by the rest of the men.
Alley, Bill, George, Toye and Hoobler.
I had grown quite close with the five of them over the years, from Toccoa all the way to Normandy: Alley was a sweet soul, I often went to see Moe when i could, we had our share of jokes and secrets, i knew i could trust him and i could go to him whenever i needed; he would always be there. Wild Bill lived up to his name, he always gave me a wild time when i was with him, he seemed tough but i knew he was just a real big softie at heart, i’d seen it up close– especially after he’d lost his brother, he was vulnerable in that moment, and i felt honoured that he trusted me enough to drop his tough facade for a small time; ever since then, we’d been close as ever. George Luz, what would i do without George Luz? He always knew how to keep the morale up in the entire company, he may have been a jokester, but he also had a talent for reading emotions, he knew when to throw an extra joke in the mix when you were annoyed or upset, whenever i was with George i’d laugh until my ribs got tough. Joe Toye, just like Bill, he was tough as nails– but he was also soft at heart, him and Bill were the kind of friends everyone needed, he’d keep you in line when needed, but he’d also be there when you needed him. And lastly, sweet Hoobler, there was just something about him, he had a sweet boyish touch to his personality, it was nice change from the tough men surrounding me, he made you feel like a kid again, laughing about something so immature. I loved all the men, i really did, but those meant the most to me, aside from Shifty and Terry of course.
“They’ll be okay,” Teresa said, turning her head to look at me for the first time, “Come ‘ere.” Without leaving me much choice, she pulled me close to her, throwing one arm around my shoulder and the other over my front, making sure i was snug against her.
“Is Chuck okay?” I asked her, furrowing my brows, i hadn’t heard anything about him.
“Yeah, he’s okay, Smokey told me he was with Shifty and Tab.” She answered, a small smile on her face.
My heart quickened its pace at the mention of Shifty, god, what is happening? I thought to myself.
“You love him.”
“What?” I frowned, did i say that out loud?
“You said that out loud.” Oh well i guess that answered my question.
“How did you know i was thinking about that?” Asking myself the question more than Terry.
“Honey i’m your bestfriend, i know everything.” She laughed.
“I think— I think i do like him.” I confessed, a blush coating my cheeks. I suddenly felt small, i shouldn’t have admitted it, because that meant it was real.
“AHA! I knew it– Chuck owes me $5!” She gleefully announced.
Slightly pulling away from her to look in her face, my mouth parted, “What?! You made a bet?”
“Maybe…”
“Oh my gosh, what was it?” I ordered, wanting to know more about this so called “bet” the lovers had running between them.
“Well– Chuck bet you’d never admit to liking him, and i bet you’d tell me.” She chuckled mischievously.
“Oh my god! You gotta be kiddin’.” I couldn’t hold back my smile as i gave her arm a shove.
Soon enough, we’d both erupted into a fit of giggles, trying to hush eachother after remembering our noise discipline order.
Our laugher was soon cut off however, by the sound of pained groans echoing in the forest.
“What the hell is that?” I asked, aiming my rifle out of our shared foxhole, looking into the darkness, Terry doing the same.
“No idea.”
“We gotta check it out.”
Scrambling up, we began shuffling toward the sound, crouched under the cover of darkness, using Terry’s sharp hearing skills to follow the sound.
We stalked through the thick trees, the only sound heard being the quiet groans of whoever had been injured. I wonder who it is.
The sound became louder with each step we took, until we began hearing the hushed whispers of Gene.
I looked at Terry before rushing to the array of different voices, each sounding worried, one in pain.
Pushing past a hurdle of bushes, i saw someone laying on the ground, three people surrounding him.
Floyd.
“What the fuck happened?” i hissed in alarm, dropping my rifle and crouching next to doc, Terry at my side a second later.
“Dumb fucking Smith stabbed him, thought he was a kraut.” Lieb said anxiously, not that he’d ever show he was nervous, but we knew he was.
“Oh fuck.” Terry cursed.
Tab let out a string of curses as Doc patched his wound with practiced ease.
“God damnit!” Floyd groaned, throwing his head back.
“I’m sorry, i’m so sorry!”
“Smith, chill out.” I warned him, if he carried on he was going to not only worry Floyd more, but wake the whole damn company up.
There was a slight crunch of leaves behind me, whipping my head around i saw the one and only Ronald Spiers.
“What’s going on here?” He asked, his voice flat and questioning.
“Uh, Smith accidentally stabbed Talbert, sir, he thought he was a kraut.” I replied.
“We’re gonna take him to a jeep now, if possible sir.” Roe finally spoke up.
Spiers hummed, like he was deep in thought, but his expression remained stoic, “Yeah, probably a good idea.” Then he was gone, vanished into the night, that was weird.
Nodding, Gene hooked an arm under Talbert’s, Liebgott grabbing the other, the two men supporting him, “You two go back to your foxholes, we’ve got him.” Gene ordered.
“You sure?” Terry asked, her eyebrows furrowed in concern.
“Yeah, don’t worry about it.”
“Okay, if you’re sure.”
“Good luck Tab.” I said, bidding them all a goodnight.
“Thanks Trigger.” He huffed a pained laugh.
With a smile on our faces, me and Terry began walking back to our hole.
“Jesus christ, poor Tab.” I spoke.
“Yeah, being mistaken for a kraut.” Terry laughed, shaking her head.
“Ace! Trigg!” a voice whisper-shouted.
We both turned, Hoob and Alley coming into our sight.
“Hey boys.” I greeted, Ace smiling at the two men.
“You guys hear that sound?” Mo asked.
“Yeah, we just came from there, Smith stabbed Floyd thinking he was a kraut.” I explained.
A look of worry etched across both men’s faces, they were concerned for their friend.
“He’s gonna be okay, Doc and Lieb took him to a jeep.” Terry finished.
“Jesus.” Alley whispered to himself, looking down.
“Stupid Smith.” Hoob shook his head, scoffing.
We all began walking forward, stepping into line with eachother. Somehow, we’d ended up at Alley and Hoobler’s foxhole.
“You guys can stay in our foxhole if you want, it’s getting kinda cold anyway.” Alley offered as we came to a stop.
“Yeah, sure.” Ace answered, already knowing i’d be fine sharing with my two close friends.
It’d be good to share with other people, it might take our mind off the hard fight we had earlier– chatting with your friends always was a good distraction.
Hopping into the foxhole, I sat next to Alley, while Hoobler and Terry sat infront of us, the four of us facing eachother.
“Wanna play truth or dare?” Hoob asked, a boyish grin on his face.
“How the hell are we gon’ do a dare, we’re on light and noise discipline.” I laughed.
“Good point… Wanna play truth?” His face lit up as he thought of the solution.
“Y’know what? Sure.” I decided for Ace and Alley too.
“Okay who first?” Mo asked.
“Well Hoob should go first, he wanted to play.” Terry answered.
“Yeah, i’ll go first, hit me with it!” Hoob eagerly grinned.
“Okay.” I hummed, trying to think of a good truth, we should probably start off light.
“What’s your most embarrassing moment?” Terry asked, she must’ve read my mind.
“Hm–” he frowned in thought, “Probably when i pissed my pants in school, i was 16.” He revealed, a shy smile on his face.
“Oh my god, what?!” I laughed, quietly of course.
The four of us erupted into a fit of quiet giggles, the imagine of a 16 year old Hoobler running through the school halls with wet pants reeled through our heads.
“Okay, Okay— Ace’s turn!” Hoobler pushed, trying to get us to move on from his embarrassing moment.
“Okay, shoot!”
“Are you and Chuck official?” Alley asked, a teasing look on his face.
I laughed, we all knew they were official, but neither of them had openly claimed it.
Terry blushed deeply, shaking her head at the child-like antics.
“Yes Mo, yes we are.” she uncovered.
“Finally!” Hoobler laughed.
“I feel like i’m back in school.” I sniggered, nostalgia running through me.
“Right Alley– you’re next!” Hoobler stated, a mischievous smile on his face, he was clearly excited for this one.
Jokingly rolling his eyes, Mo nodded, waiting for his turn.
“What’s one thing you’ve never told any of us about yourself?”
“Hmm— that’s a good one.” I pointed at Hoob.
“Thanks, i thought of it myself.” He tilted his head up in pride.
Smiling, i turned to Mo, waiting for his answer.
“Okay– I have a wife and a kid.” He disclosed.
The three of us stared at one another in shock, he had a wife and kid?!
“Close your mouths guys, you’re gonna catch flies.” Mo sighed, looking blissfully deep in though.
“Hey man, i thought we were friends?! You never told me!” Hoobler said, feigning offence, but still curious.
“Yeah!” I agreed.
“Well, i guess i never found the chance to bring it up, i didn’t think it would change anything really.” He shrugged.
“You gotta photo?” I asked.
Nodding, he reached into his breast pocket, rummaging for a few seconds before pulling out a crinkled photo, passing it to me.
On the photo was a beautiful woman with a graceful smile, an adorable little girl sat on her lap, who looked to be between 1-2, she was the spit of her mother.
“Oh my gosh, they’re both beautiful Mo!” I gasped, still shocked as i passed the photo to Ace.
“Yeah, aren’t they?” Alley rhetorically questioned, “My wife’s called Dorothy, and my little girl is called Grace! She’s two next month.” His face dropped slightly as the last part, he was going to miss his daughter’s second birthday, and who knew how many more.
Giving him a sympathetic smile, i put a hand on his shoulder.
“Wow, you’ve got a wonderful family Mo.” Ace said, smiling at him as Hoobler nodded in agreement.
“Thanks guys.” He said as Hoobler passed him the photo back, tucking it in his pocket safely.
“Anyway… Your turn Rue.” He turned to me, clearly not wanting to dwell on the thought of not seeing his family for too long.
“Okay– give me your best!” I bravely nodded.
“Are you in love with Shifty.” Hoobler asked.
My heart thudded, my hands suddenly becoming clammy as a blush rose to my cheeks. Terry looked at me, silently saying are you?
I didn’t want to lie, everyone else had been so honest, it wouldn’t be fair for me to lie– i hated lying anyway.
“I like him, i don’t know about love.” It was a half truth, i definitely did like him, but i loved him too– atleast i thought i did.
“Wooh!” Hoobler cheered, “I knew it.”
“Shutup Hoob.” I chortled.
“I’m sure he likes you too Trigg, i’ve seen the way he looks at you.” Alley assured, being a good friend as always.
“I don’t know about that, but thanks Mo.”
“I’ve seen him look at you too! He really does like you, i know he does!” Hoob added.
“Hoob what the hell do you know about the looks of love.” Mo jabbed lightly at his friend.
“Hey! They didn’t call me cupid back at home for nothing!” He jabbed back.
“Nobody called you that.” Terry threw him a suspicious look.
“You’re right, they didn’t, but i know a thing or two about love.” He shrugged, a sarcastic look on his face.
We all laughed.
As hushed giggles and truths were thrown around in the foxhole, there was a secret vow that whatever was said in the foxhole, stayed in there. For a night, I forgot what was going on around us, because for a short while; we were kids again. And for that short while, we were free.
