Old city hall in Bocholt, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Northwestern Germany. Bocholt lies just 4 km south of the Dutch border. Its climate is temperate with maritime influences and mild winters in comparison to other regions due to the proximity to the ocean and its low elevation. Bocholt was first mentioned in 779, when Charlemagne won a battle against the Saxons, but the settlement was probably much older. The town received city rights in 1222. In the 15th century, it really flourished. During WW2, it survived unscathed until an Allied bombing raid in the spring of 1945 destroyed most of the city, which was then captured by the British.
